Mythic Entertainment has announced that three quarters of a million players have registered to play Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning.

FAIRFAX, Va. - October 10, 2008 - Mythic Entertainment, an Electronic Arts Inc. First off, it is newly out.  Secondly it is not a bad game.  People are having a lot of fun playing it.  Thirdly, not many have reached end game yet.  Mythic was upfront with the changes made before release.  People got the complaints out of their system prior to release.

Is War the Wow killer, no, but it still is providing a lot of people lots of fun right now.  It is so far one of the best releases of the year.

The only word of caution I have to give, is that Mythic has been known to mess up a good thing.  Hopefully they have learned their lesson.

now i wonder how many people are waiting for the first month to pass before buying and subscribing to war.

given the recent events over at funcom, i know a few people who are planning to play war, only once they are sure that it doent turn out to be a end game lacking aoc.

Glad to hear they are doing well account-wise. I didn't renew after the free 30 (for a variety of reasons), but I wish the WAR players the best. I just didn't care for the game.

Glad to hear Warhammer is doing well. Hope it continues .... its forcing WOW to add some different content. Competition FTW!

This is a perfect example of a game done right with an honest and upfront production team. Nothing was overhyped or oversold, it is simply what it is, take it or leave it. Surprise surprise, when you're honest with your future player base, they keep playing your game and word of mouth helps to sell more copies.

Otherwise, you can take Funcom's approach. Overhype your game, lie to your future player base, sell a bunch of copies initially, then all but die off not six months after launch followed by the lead game designer resigning from the company.

I think it's rather obvious which one is preferable, even if you don't like either game. Thing is though, it should have been obvious before either one of these games went into production.

Yes, I'm surprised there hasn't been more of:

"Yes, but no-one will resub after the free 30 days", or

"Yes, but the active accounts are all just EA/Mythic staff", or even the timeless

"Warhammer sucks"

Surely positive news on an excellent game can't get positive forum posts at MMORPG.com?  That's not right!

After WoW this is the second game I'm becoming addicted. And I'm not so young any more. All others (and have been many of them) put together I have played in my life were not so fun, good, avesome, ... as WoW and now War. I guess I will remain for a lot of time split between this two worlds.

Making comparison (impossible to cover all, this comes now first in my mind):

War needs much (really much) better gathering & crafting system. Few things feels pretty unnatural (i.e. you can pull 1 mob from in middle a group of 100 mobs; runners does not brings help back, ...). But otherwise game is just doing great. Scenarios are really great idea, especially possibility to jump to them from any part of the world. Great also pq's. RvR (ok, PvP) and PvE are incredibly good integrated together. I never PvP-ed before War, actually hated it, ... but now has become integral part of my gameplay.

On the other side, now I really hate returning in Wow how much time one must wait between fights without drink and eat. Thinking back ... 1/3 of gameplay was feeding.

Enough for now.
