When we first arrived at the EA Mythic studios last week, those members of the media who were in attendance sat down with Josh Drescher and Paul Barnett to get an update on how the game had progressed since the last time that we had talked about Warhammer Online: Age of Reckoning. This was only one of the many presentations that we had, and we will be bringing you reports from those specific area presentations over the next week.
“Now that people are running around,” Paul said, “we’re making a game.” What he meant by that was that planning and designing the game are one thing, but it isn’t until you have actual players responding to (and breaking) the systems in place that the real work of making something for others to enjoy begins. He looks at beta as a chance to try things out and as such, they are currently in the process of seeing what works and what doesn’t for the game.
When the beta for the game goes down, it gives the developers a chance to focus in on player feedback, and Paul gave us an example from RvR. While EA Mythic is happy with their experience in Realm vs. Realm with Dark Age of Camelot, they wanted to know “how do we learn from that and make an evolutionary step?”
For those who might not know how EA Mythic is running their beta test, it is a little bit out of the ordinary when compared to your average test. Instead of just releasing players into the wilds of the game, each beta phase concentrates on a different element of the game (when we were there, it was the High Elf and Dark Elf areas that were feeling the love). This process, which they call “targeted beta stages” tells players exactly what it is that the devs need to know about, when they need to know it and we are told that it “creates a great focus on what needs to be done.” By taking the game offline, we are told, you allow your developers to take the time to improve the game without the extreme pressure that a live game brings.
So, what’s come out of these focused beta stages?
Previously, the Warhammer team had been focused heavily on the scenario instances for their RvR. They had some persistent world RvR (about 10%). It’s not, we are told, that people were unhappy with the scenarios but the feedback that they received told them that players wanted more. As a result, they increased the amount of persistent world RvR, they implemented NPC guards into the mix (Which keeps players from just tagging control points without a fight) and more. They also wanted to go further with what had already been developed siege-wise, which has led to some really interesting mechanics that we’ll talk more specifically about in the Siege report. The team has also done work on their Public Quests and other areas of the game as well. In short, for the EA Mythic team, this interesting beta seems to be working.
From there, the guys led into talking about the different (and sometimes seemingly random) elements that have been added to the game in an effort to bring the world to life. After all, we are told, they’re trying to make a full, living world and not a machine. As an example, we were told about Lairs. Lairs are places (caves and the like) in the world that aren’t pointed to by any quests. Instead, players will simply stumble across them. Sometimes, they will find a happy surprise, other times, they might get their butts handed to them by a powerful mob. Really, it could go either way. The point is that these lairs are intended to reward players for casual exploration outside of the scope of the quest line.
Then… there’s the plungers. Now, I know what you’re thinking, and no, we’re not talking about the kind of plungers you keep by your toilet in case of an embarrassing emergency. In this case, we’re talking about plungers like Wile E. Coyote would use to blow up his dynamite, you know the box with the “T” on top that makes things go ka-boom? Well, Paul and the team have placed these plungers, dubbed “Plungers of the World”. These would be placed throughout the maps, in places that people really shouldn’t be in the first place (at the bottom of a cliff, for example, where players aren’t meant to be). The plunger would shoot the player back up to where they were supposed to be (and possibly kill them). As I sit here writing this article, I can’t help but wonder if this was a joke, or wishful thinking, or if these really do exist in-game. In any case, the example illustrates this next point perfectly:
“It’s the strangest things that people find cool,” Paul said. While it was said in the context of explaining these peripheral features, it really seems to sum up Paul’s general game design philosophy. “It’s the little things,” he said, “that really grab you, even if you can’t explain why.”
“You can’t replicate the pattern,” Paul said, referring to the proverbial video game template, “and miss the point.” The point, in this case, is the creation of a game that is, above all else, fun and engaging for the players.
While that just about does it for the Progress report portion of the Warhammer goodness, you can also check out our interview with Mark Jacobs about the launch date delay announcement, here.
I have to say I admire EAMythic for taking this approach with their beta testing. At least it shows they are serious about producing a good product for release.
Its been my opinion for some time now...(been a closed beta tester a few times thru the years) that..instead of letting players run wild through the beta test, we should actually be doing some good..so that the game DOES succeed.
Open beta is for showcasing..to prospective gamers. Least that seems to be what happens.
But closed beta is where the serious work takes place, and having all those volunteers focussed in the areas that are important or need testing..is a wonderful idea..glad to see a game company making their money count in the right places.
Kudos :)

Paul is good with metaphor and simile, so I have one for him:
Warhammer Online is like the hottest chick you could ever imagine....she is the girl that you lay awake at night thinking about....she's the girl that when you do fall asleep fills your dreams with such lust and excitement that you wake up out of breath, panting, wanting nothing and no one but her. Warhammer Online is that girl....and now she has called you from her car and told you she is on the way over and she is going to give you the greatest sex of your life.....the sex will be so good you will need intravenous fluids to keep you going....your bed will have to be reinforced with steel gurders, your couch and rug had better have scotchguard. And when she gets there......4 hours late......she strips off her clothes and sits next to you on the couch and rubs your leg for six hours, and every time you tried to make a move she tells you she is saving herself for marriage.
Warhammer Online is that girl. At first when she calls, you're like...yeah I'm gonna get some! An hour into the leg rubbing your still convinced, but there is this nawing feeling in the back of your head like...why isn't this going anywhere yet. Two hours later, you're thinking, atleast I saw her naked. A couple hours after that, you're getting sick and tired of hearing her talk about school and work, and how one of her friends hit on a friend of a friends girlfriend. When she finally leaves, you are relieved. The pain is unbearable. You can barely walk her to the door, where you try to kiss her but she says not on the first date and tousles your hair playfully. She tells you she will see you in six months....and then you will really, really have a great time. Warhammer Online is that girl.
She is the girl that makes you think about calling the girls that live next door. One is AOC. She looks mannish and that adam's apple has you worried, but you are desperate. Or there is the other girl, LOTRO that has a pretty face but is only 18....a little young, but she seems like she's growing into a beautiful woman if you give her time. Hmmm......time to call LOTRO girl.
Open Beta is where they 'open the flood gates' and find out where the floods, leaks, and droughts will take place. Until then... carry on.
Yes, I'm disappointed by the delay. But, all in all, I think the game will be better when it launches. I think better = greater attention to input from the playerbase + fewer bugs + still some really great unknowns and surprises to be uncovered.
Paul B... cool enough to be the 5th Beatle.
Guided beta test phases definately seem to be alot better approach. By guiding them though you seem to accomplish things much faster and more efficiently than letting them run amok and hope they stumble upon something critical.
A lot of people trying to get into closed beta are usually trying to get in so they can just play the game. I remember during the Planetside it was utter chaos, but then again I don't have the best memory. I think a fair amount of people who are looking to "test" in closed beta are really looking for open beta where developers do most of their server stress tests and what not without too much constraint or actually needing to get as much feedback as with closed beta. If that even makes sense.
Good article,
Like the part about Wile E Coyote. " we’re talking about plungers like Wile E. Coyote would use to blow up his dynamite, you know the box with the “T” on top that makes things go ka-boom? "
heheh
I will agree that Paul seems to use analogies a great deal, but that's probably because he's found it's the easiest way to get people to quickly grasp what he trying to say.
I liked the article but I have to disagree with Jon Wood when he says Mythic is trying to make Warhammer a 'living world' . It has exploding plungers and turns gankers into chickens, for pete's sake! How are these elements of a 'living' world?
And Warhammer is not a hot chick either. It's a game.
Games get delayed. Follow the development process in every other genre - FPS, RTS, RPG, 4X or any other acronym, and you'll see one constant element - delays. If you don't see delays then you'll usually see a game that puts schedule before quality and results in garbage.
Terranah's analogy is directed at the wrong thing. It's not the game that should be compared to a woman (hot or otherwise), it's the hype surrounding the game that actually fits his comparison.
If following the hype of a game during its development is too tiring or annoying for anyone, then don't follow the hype. To use another analogy, it's like TV. You don't have to watch. Turn it off, go outside and wait until the new season starts (or in this case, the retail release).
The developers really seem like they care about this game, and EA/Mythic doesn't give the feeling they are just trying to push it out asap to make a few quick bucks. I think this game is going to be huge, and it is going to give the current MMOs a run for their money, and new MMOs something new to look up to.
Well since you really used that analogy, let me clear things up for you.
A girl that wont have sex until marriage. She obviously has her morals and wants it to be a special event not rushed because some guy can't use his hand. She sticks to her decision and everyone should be able to respect that.
The guy who tries to rush a girl into sex is a different thing especially if he thinks about calling the girl next door. Obviously this man is only out for one thing and that is a quick thrill. He isn't in Love and nor does he love the girl. This type of guy never had morals instilled in him or had them warped by 90's television which has 12 year olds dressing like sluts to be frank.
In conclusion. You really need to ask around about relationships. Sex is fine and all but having someone that really cares about you and I mean the real you not your wallet or good looks, is the greatest thing in the world. Those relationships last a long time and thats the relationship I want with WAR. I don't want to get the game and play it for 2 months and quit. I want to play the game and enjoy playing it.
So until WAR is ready I will be using my hand, I suggest you fix your self gratifying ways and do the same.
I would of read the article , but the poser sunglasses just is unprofessional and it will show in there game.
That is probably the third dumbest thing I have read on these boards since I started coming to these forums in 03'. "They like to have fun and wear sunglasses so the game will be lacking!" Rofl
Image means a lot. Google Warhammer Online e3 interviews, it is a trend for these guys to fake the the funk.
God forbid people like to have a good time while developing a game.
Ahh, they are just having fun though, ya know? Glasses aren't going to dictate how well the game does but I do understand that some people won't and don't view things the same way. It is just late where I am and I am sick so I took some cough medicine which makes me overly tired and cranky. I didn't mean my previous statement.
I apologize by the way ^^
This delay does not surprise me in the least. Don't get me wrong...I think it is a good thing, but it did not surprise me.
Heh AoC needs to be delayed but now they've committed and taken a ton of people's $$ I just don't see it happening.
Oh well.
i don't care what anyone says. i like warhammer dev. he delays the game and isn't afraid of anything.
mehhh..this guy seems to love the camera and making speeches like a poliitcian a bit to much for me.
less talk, more work on game and just maybe, they will push release back only once more
Ya I agree with ya. He looks kinda like Elton John LOL (but I like Elton) ....its all PR I guess, to look cool to draw the WoW kiddies
Well it's part of his job description, so of course he's advertising the game
About the work part; well... I don't suppose every single artist and developer stops working each and every time Paul opens his mouth to promote the game ;) the work goes on.
2) Doubt they are going to push it back again.
So your pissed at mythic because Warhammer dosen't want to be the cum-dump Vangaurd was?
Sorry I'll wait for the hot girl with Morals, over the skank that puts out.
EA got their fingers burnt with Earth & Beyond with mucking about westwood, pushing for an early as possivle release even though it wasn't ready, then pulling stunts like moving the servers from Las Vegas to San Francisco when then game went live.
Looks like they have taken all that onboard and decided to think it through and go for the polish which so many MMO's tend not to have when they are 1st launched and go for players who will stick with them for months and years rather than sell a few extra boxes if we launch it early.
I am shocked to hear myself say good on you EA!!
Eurogamer: You said yesterday that you would release in fall. The last announced date was Q2. Why the delay of six months or so?
Jeff Hickman: Say "or so" - I know the actual dates and it's not six months. Let's call it three to six months. Why the extra time? It is just what Mark Jacobs, our GM, has always talked about, and just what's been reinforced, especially recently, by EA. We are really, really pushing for quality in our games. We believe very strongly, and John Riccitiello the CEO at EA has really pushed hard on this in the last year since he came online, that getting games out the door quickly, making the quick buck, is not what EA needs to be about. We need to be about quality games, games that build big franchises, games that have future and longevity.
Now, we've always known that. You look at Mythic and we talk that talk. The problem is, as an independent studio, it's very hard to do that. EA came along and they've give us the ability to. They've given us the time and the money and any help that we want, while at the same time leaving us alone.
So we get to the point, really in the past couple of months, where we're looking at our game and it's like, man, it's really coming together, things are looking good, we're feeling good about all the little pieces that we have in place. But: is it as good as it needs to be? Or as good as we want it to be? That's really the key.
And we all feel like we need a little more time. We need more time to polish it. Like, all the content's done. The game is fully playable. Technically, I could launch the game today.
Instead of doing that, we literally are going back through the game - we've actually been through probably the first half of the game already. We're going through every single public quest, making sure it feels just right, making sure it's got the right voice overs, making sure it's got the right polish, making sure that it feels as good as we can possibly make it. We're looking at every quest in the game, we're looking at how the land is set up, all of the content. Everything. And making sure that it feels the way that it needs to feel, and that we want it to feel, so that we can have a slam dunk success when we launch the game.
And that my friends is how you make a quality game.
Well it's part of his job description, so of course he's advertising the game
it would be very stupid of Mythic to miss out on any oportunity to promote their game... the hype around WoW was also huge when it came out, mind you.
About the work part; well... I don't suppose every single artist and developer stops working each and every time Paul opens his mouth to promote the game ;) the work goes on. - END QUOTE
Agreed! :D
Whats up with gamers today...no sense of humour..matter of fact they don't know what that is.
The sunglasses are for FUN.....F U N...get it? ^^ Wow...I bet that just flew over 90% of the audience's heads right?
Games are for fun...P Barnett is a comedian..he's funny..well to those of us that understand humour...*wink*
He's good advertising for the game, and more than likely by now has his own little fan club, ...please lighten up and take his quips and puns for what they are...comedy value.

I agree with the above comment of they probably won't push it back again, especially now that they have a pre-order box.
I'll trust EAMythic more then I did Brad McQuaid and Sigil..
I don't think anyone can ever trust McQuaid again lol.
I don't think anyone can ever trust McQuaid again lol. - End Quote
Yeah I think McQuaid pretty much burned his bridges, haven't heard anything about him..since Soe swallowed up Sigil and a few employees..leaving the rest with no jobs in the parking lot. Shame. Although I note one of the people that worked on Vanguard..has shown up in Warhammer..good to see at least that person is still employed.
As for McQuaid, too bad he wasn't more organized, Microsoft would have probably backed Vanguard to the hilt...........Microsoft has alot of money ...hehe :P
I completely have given up on any games sponsored by or made by SOE...my focus is on EAMYTHIC and Warhammer, and I was an SOE customer right from Everquest beta onward.
Thats what happens when you disappoint your customers too often.
I switched and so far am happy I did.
WAITING ON WARHAMMER!!!!!!!!!!!! :D

Nice articel .....BUT......
For those who might not know how EA Mythic is running their beta test, it is a little bit out of the ordinary when compared to your average test. Instead of just releasing players into the wilds of the game, each beta phase concentrates on a different element of the game
I've been in tons of closed beta's and this isn't something i would consider to be ordinary, as in atleast 80% of the close beta's i was in this was alway's the case, but you had to truly beta test meaning not only playing or trying the game itself but it would require you to be active on it''s beta forums aswell to know what is going to be tested or asked for.
Sorry guys but when they decided to make regular Warhammer game instead of Warhammer 40 000 and they totally copied WoW graphic style they gave up of any kind of originality which is main substance for the game in 21st century to sucseed.
This game is crap and we have seen all this game has to offer at least 10 times before in some earlier MMOs.
World of Starcraft is in development and coming out probably a year after SC2 so that would be only girl worth waiting.
Don't judge a book by its cover.
WoW stole most of stuff from other MMORGP's and implemented it as theirs. Can't call that originality.
Nice, I'm liking these new articles, the more I read, the more I appreciate Mythic delaying this game to improve it.
Couldn't agree more with you tachgb. Prefer to see game delayed and finished as it should be rather then just released as it is now....
they totally copied WoW graphic style
Actually Warhammer looks like it always has. It's the style of the miniatures transferred to a computer game. That's the look of Warhammer and it's very strong and easily recognizable. If you want to know why Blizzard's art has such a resemblance to Warhammer, you'll have to ask them, not Mythic. Same deal with StarCraft. It's not a big deal, probably just means Blizzard's got some Warhammer fans on their art/story team (such as Chris Metzen).
You certainly can't say anything bad about Mythic for copying the Warhammer look in their game - they're in with Games Workshop - they're allowed to.
One thing Mythic HAS copied is Blizzard's tactic of releasing their game "when it's done". And that's one of the major reasons why Blizzard games are so polished and finished when they're finally released. The more companies copying that stance, the better.
LOL please Warhammers not even out, yet you act like other MMO's copied them. The sad part is the WOW thing has been done to death and people are looking for something NEW. So it makes no difference now most look at Warhammer as a WOW clone and say its not all you want its to late.
The Warhammer universe and art has existed for over 25 years. That's a long, long, long time before the WarCraft and StarCraft settings were created. Warhammer Fantasy battles for instance is a miniature board game, and you can clearly see the visual style of the miniatures both in Warhammer Online and the WarCraft series. If you look at Warhammer 40k you'll notice that StarCraft art and units also bears a striking resemblance to this. Warhammer Online also isn't a World of WarCraft clone, other than that it's an MMO. If you want to say it's a clone of something, the closets thing would be Dark Age of Camelot. The biggest difference between WoW and WAR is that WAR's focus is on Realm vs Realm PvP, while WoW's focus is on PvE dungeons and raiding.
In general, you should probably read up a bit on the game before making too many statements about it. There's many reasons for why WAR isn't necessarily your cup of tea. Maybe you don't like massive PvP fights, maybe you don't like sieging keeps, maybe you're not that interested in the setting. Perhaps your greatest idea of fun is sitting in a big raid week after week killing bosses in Black Temple - and that's fine. To each his own.
Cmon guys its ridiculous to argue, WoW is out for 4 long years now and that means Mythic can shovel their 25 years of existence story somewhere...
This is pointless btw by your logic Warhammer is LOTR ripoff than (Elves, Dwarfs, Undead, Orcs and Goblins... its all J.R.R. Tolkien).
If Blizzard ripped Warhammer in any way and we all know they did its to late now for anyone to say anything because WoW was first one who brought us that kind of MMO with that specific graphic style to PC.
Only way they could save this title or put it on another level of success was branding WH40k universe but they chose easier copy-paste variant of unoriginality and once they find out that this game has like 100 times less subscribers than WoW after 5 years they will maybe decide to start another game - WH40k and its going to be completed probably 4 years after Blizzard release of World of Starcraft and all over again...
Nah, if you're going to do a Warhammer game, better make it look like Warhammer. If you're not going to make it look like Warhammer, don't make a Warhammer game. Dawn of War was also quite successful despite StarCraft already existing. There's no real problem with the graphic style of the two games being somewhat similar. If you're basing what games you play on whether or not you've seen a specific graphic style before, I can't help you, but I'm sure that kind of gamer is exceedingly rare. Gameplay is what keeps a player interested.
Everyone see it as they want to see it. Obiviously Vipjerry you think you are right. Maybe from your aspect of view you are. From someone else's view not.
Tolkien didn't invented elves, dwarves and other mythical creatures. He just shaped and changed them to fit his view. They existed in (German, Norser, Dutch...) mythology long ago before Tolkien even was born.
Any game that comes out with good graphic will be called clone of something else. Most of things we have seen in other games and probably want to see it in future game. Again it is aspect of view. Someone see it black someone see it white, someone don't see it at all... (wife called and have to go out to pick her up so can't finish this long post i've intended)
Based on how well the CE is selling, and how many people have signed up, and continue to sign up for the closed beta of this game, I concur you have not the slightest clue how successful this game is going to be. WoW copied everything it knows from previous games and was successful. It brought little to the table that was completely new. Instanced PvP has been done, instanced PVE has been done, low polygon graphics had been done. You don't have to have great graphics, and you don't have to do something completely new to have a successful game. What you do need is something fun, and to polish that fun thing, and that is what Mythic is trying to do. You are kidding yourself if you think this will not be a success.
I'm very well aware of this and thats exactly my point.
Warhammer in state it is now does not look all that great. Graphics already looks dated and gameplay is not something we didn't see before.
But we shell see soon who was right or wrong.
Graphics are not DATED they are Warhammer and they are a lot cleaner-cut the WOW just look at the humans (there is a difference)
Also I would have to say the Orcs of Warhammer are very unique considering the way they reproduce and all.
I have and will continue to keep an eye out on this game. Though there has been a lot of negative, subvertive walk-around the NDA 'reviews' posted on the net, I take all that stuff with a grain of salt. Closed beta is not supposed to be fun, its supposed to be work IMO, and that approach they're using seems to fit the bill perfectly.
However what I'm getting from Barnet and his crew is that they're enthusiastic, ambitious, and wanting to have a blast creating it and then seeing players enjoy the same thrill. I'm not naive enough to think they're doing this for alturistic purposes, it's a business there to make money, and as I've often said, I don't mind people making a bankload of cash, so long as they do it in a fashion that doesn't demean my time. WoW demeans my time, its PvP stinks, and its the area I enjoy the most. It has a certain degree of charm to be sure, but I think I'm going to like WAR a lot more if this philosophy and enthusiasm continues to open release, because I know it'll be both a (relatively) smooth launch and campy or not, if its actually FUN isntead of a brain tumor inducing grind, I'll be on it like white on rice.
And Mr Barnet, if you're reading these, please, I implore you, no gear grinds where you have to hit the same dungeon over and over and over again for essential drops just to be able to compete in RvR.
Please do continue to take these "reviews" with a grain of salt. Like I posted in another thread where somebody said something similar:
Many people claim to be in beta and trash it yet only one, ONE, of them has ever been able to tell me their forum name or in game name to chat or talk about things. The thing about WAR is that you can say you are in the beta, and that there is a beta. This leads to ANYBODY on this forum being able to claim they are in it. Few people, including myself, make that claim and can produce some sort of evidence. When you call people out who claim to be in beta and they aren't they tend to:
a) Troll harder to try and change the subject
b) get mad and defensive at the fact they were called out
or
c) They stop posting for a little while or make a new user name before bashing the game again.
I'm not in beta but i'm hype and noxious and unpatient from one side to get into it. Since there is nothing i can do to get into beta - can only wait. And if i see it with my eyes then i can speak about it.
But as old PK on MUDS waited for similar game for long. As in old MUD Act of War to certain level you can PVE or kill monsters and bosses. After certain level you have to kill other players/faction to level up. Miss those old good days. Warhammer will bring that thrill and joy back to me from start for sure.
so we have to wait a few months longer . i dont think that actually suprised many . if anything i m glad they are taking time to iron it out . after all if your that desperate to play it you can get the delux edition and have a guaranteed spot in the open beta . the delux is overpriced but i guess this can be offset against the money you save in the open beta on not having the monthly fees ( if you take my meaning) if thats 3-4 months before its release its proberbly not so bad . personally i d rather wait till i talk to a few people who are actually playing it and see a few reviews before i buy the same applys to conan . after vanguard i ll never believe the pre release hype again . once bitten twice shy .
I knew when this game was announced I would play it, I have loved the IP for going on 10 years or so. Yes, it is disappointing to see delays, and I know a lot of the guys I've played other mmo's with have just said "to hell with it" as time has passed. But I have no intention of paying to play another beta. Finish the game, make it fun, make it challenging, make it WORK properly. I don't think this game will be groundbreaking or the be-all and end-all of mmo's, that kind of "waiting for an mmo messiah" attitude has caused nothing but pain and disappointment in the past. But I do think this game will entertain me, and that's all I'm really concerned about.
Yes, I would rather play a 40k mmo in the current fantasy loaded market. And while I do understand the playable races they chose in regards to the whole RvR theme, I am pretty damn upset that I can't play my Skaven, and am not sure how they would fit into the current setup. It's nice to see an official announcement as well, as frankly, I don't really care about concept art, and the fact that that was all I was seeing for a while from WAR had me a bit worried.
If i don't get client instalation online will have to wait for cd to ship here from Austria (friend will mail dvd/cds anyhow.
Most of games i've played, got key before i even got cds/box so client download was best sollution.
THQ is working on a 40k MMO
Warcarft and starcraft Both borrowed heavily from warhammer and 40k
WAR graphics look nothing like wow graphics The models in WAR are much much more detailed.
You cant have Crysis graphics in a mmo with over 100 people on the screen at one time - well you could but the percent of people with machines capable would make the game have a much smaller install base. You simplely cannot do that with mmos and expect them to be successful.
We will indeed.
See you back on this board, say a couple months after release?
Are you sure that is not Elton John in the picture advertising for WAR?
Good-Bye yellow Brick Road?
No...actually thats the Fifth Beatle!! hehe Still the sunglasses thing. Too bad some of these gamers don't get the "campy" or fun.
Personally I think these guys have alot of fun while they're doing their little information videos. And so it should be...if they're having fun..we will be too when the time comes. :P
