Latest Feature for Landmark

  • Monsters and Linking and Caves, Oh My!

While the folks at Sony Online Entertainment had to delay the launch of their biggest update to Landmark since they released Alpha until later this week, they still went ahead and invited press to a private livestream to give a preview of all the new goodies coming in the update, which was originally slated to either take only four hours to load and get the servers open again, or it could take up to 48 hours.

My wife loves to game, but she doesn’t like MMORPGs, as a rule. So finding an MMORPG that we can play together has always been a frustrating process. Me, I’ll play anything. An entire generation of milquetoast WoW-rehashes and Korean grindfests imported via Google Translate have lowered my expectations to basically rock bottom. My wife, however, has standards. And she’d like to tell you 5 things, just 5 things, which really piss her off…

  • Things Are About to Get Even More Interesting

Landmark is a game that was born of a need for Sony Online Entertainment to begin work on EverQuest Next and still be able to involve their players. With it, SOE hoped to achieve a bedrock of community that would bridge both games and allow them to give players unprecedented access to the development process. At SOE Live, Dave Georgeson, Director of Development for Landmark and EverQuest Next, spoke at great length as to what was in store for SOE's building game.

We had the opportunity to spend time as the first alpha group in EQN:L and for a chance to chat with the developers about the game that kicks off the Founders Alpha later today. The most pervasive thought is that there truly is something for everyone in SOE's most ambitious game to date.

  • The Dry Spell before SOE Live

As SOE readies itself for SOE Live, a dry spell is coming for the information seekers of Landmark. I was down last week with an illness so I couldn’t get to making a column for last week, and it seems this week the folks at Sony Online Entertainment have wildfires and safety issues they need to contend with. • New Props and a Teleport Feature

This week's Landmark livestream felt light on the surface, what with a discussion of a set of rustic-themed props being the primary sort of feature discussion. Hidden among the informative tidbits this week, however, is the awesome new power that will be wielded by beta testers for visiting other folks' claims once the latest patch comes in: teleportation!

  • How Founder’s Packs Can Do Better

Recently, Trion unveiled Founder’s Packs for ArcheAge. While you will be able to play the game for free at launch, you can secure guaranteed beta access and numerous other perks much sooner for a fee. This is similar to what SOE has offered for its upcoming EverQuest Next: Landmark. Trion also offers “support” packs for its upcoming release, Trove, that run up to $2500. These aren’t limited to MMOs, as MOBAs have also started to get into the founder’s pack game.

  • Forms and Functions, Apps and Upgrading

I find myself enthused by this week's livestream for Landmark, partly because Omeed Dariani always seems hilariously tipsy and pun-filled while working. Aside from that, the livestream actually walks me through the new enhancements that are on their way to Landmark.

  • Air, Glass, and Upkeep Sass

In today’s Landmark column, we’ll be discussing part of the recent Landmark Live show, which introduced two new features into the game, as well as talking for a short while about the game’s upkeep system, which some of my friends online have noted can use a bit of discussion: the nature of upkeep for player housing.

  • All-Access Revisions & a Landmark Update

This week's Landmark column goes back to the tried and tested formula of discussing recent goings-on in the Landmarky-mark world of Sony Online Entertainment (SOE). Aside from an incoming Landmark patch, which should be active by the time you're reading this, one other point of discussion is the update to the All-Access subscription plan.

  • A Touch of Free-to-Play Hubris

Sony Online Entertainment's (SOE) Director of Development for the Everquest franchise, Dave Georgeson, talked to IGN about the free-to-play model. While he says there's “nothing wrong” with subscriptions, he now says “free-to-play is the way that gamers should want their MMOs to be, and the reason I think that is that if we don’t do a really good job and we don’t entertain the player, we don’t make a dime.”

  • New Name, Slightly Different Game

It felt easier to call Everquest Next: Landmark just Landmark so as to significantly differentiate it from Everquest Next (EQN). Apparently, Sony Online Entertainment agrees, and has changed the name of it's craft-heavy version of EQN to, quite simply, Landmark.

  • Rethinking the Pillars of MMO Design

RPG designers often refer to the four pillars when discussing a new game or concept. Their goals often aim to improve or reinvent one or more aspect(s). SWTOR emphasized the story pillar, while Wildstar showed interest in combat. There are MMOs that aim to invent new pillars like Everquest Next, while others focus on improving a variable within a pillar. Could these pillars of game design be stifling innovation or do they merely keep the design process grounded in what works?

  • The Franchise at 15

Nothing says, “Everquest is awesome!” quite like a picture of Omeed Dariani riding the 1970s Batmobile. Everquest has come a long (really long) way since Omeed and his Batmobiling ways. In one sense, this is because Omeed now has his very own Everquest Live loveseat, and also because Everquest has grown in its own way over time, culminating in the development of Everquest Next Landmark and Everquest Next.

  • The World's Largest DevTeam

Every so often, the staff at Sony Online Entertainment will mention how Everquest Next Landmark has what it calls “the world's largest development team.” The world's largest development team for Landmark includes every player testing the game, breaking its functions, and essentially crowdsourcing the means for the game's coding team to push Landmark to its technical and imaginative limits.

  • Monetization, Player Studio, & Other Updates

The March 5 Landmark Live video brought some more clarifications regarding monetization for the Everquest Next Landmark, as well as how the Player Studio will operate when it comes time for players to sell their wares in-game. Aside from this, there were also some minor clarifications regarding the timeline for the game's updates, most especially Closed Beta's arrival.

  • The Business Roadmap

This week's Everquest Next Landmark write-up isn't going to be very long, but there's going to be quite a bit of information to digest today as Everquest Franchise Director Dave Georgeson revealed Sony Online Entertainment's (SOE) game plan for monetization of Landmark as it moves through the alpha phases into beta.

  • Smedley, the Sandbox, and Online Society

I was planning on writing an article relating to what I’ve been able to do in the game, but a recent blog post by Sony Online Entertainment (SOE) president John Smedley just made me throw out my plans and focus on it. Smedley discussed SOE’s vision of the sandbox, and why the sandbox model of MMORPGs is looking like the way forward for the industry. It’s a great look at why Everquest Next made a shift in its development cycle to become a sandbox MMORPG (or two).

  • The 90 Minute Challenge

While Everquest Next; Landmark’s Alpha doesn’t lend itself too easily to going in without a lot of information beforehand (In fact, I’d essentially given up going in completely blind 10 minutes after building my character), I thought the Landmark Alpha could afford one of my 90 minute challenges.

If one video wasn't enough to make you want to scream "ALPHAAAAAAA!" then four videos will likely turn many Everquest Next: Landmark fans into a quivering mess of excitement. Better yet, that's EXACTLY what Sony Online Entertainment did since the last time I wrote about the game. Let's delve into what's happened in the past week by going through the content chronologically.

  • Transparency and the Way Forward

For as long as I’ve been writing for MMORPG.com and, in fact, long before that, I’ve had a keen interest in transparency and openness. It’s why I’m a fan of Square Enix’s Naoki Yoshida and his handling of Eorzean matters. It’s also why I wanted desperately to to discuss some recent goings-on on the Planetside Reddit, which basically struck all the right kinds of goodie-goodie feels in me regarding Everquest Next’s future.
