Not impressed with argument. First RPG on a mainframe was Dungeon (text based RPG) from the 70s and Rogue from the 80s. Started with that. Not impressed at all.

Actually ziabatsu UO was the first 2d MMORPG. EQ was the first 3D MMORPG, but the first MMORPG was 'MazeWar' released in 1974 and is considered the "first" MMORPG ever created.

 

There was also Meridian59 which came out before UO.

 

So NO, if you want to get specific then yes EQ was the direct inspiration for WoW and showed everyone just how popular & profitable an MMORPG could actually be. Without EQ WoW would not exist.
