Don't give us stories. Give us worlds and we will make our own stories.

Anyone guess a year for release?  2013?  2014?

Probably reasonable estimates, although the gamer in me hopes it's sooner.

I just hope that when or IF EQ Next is made they focus on being a PvE game like EQ original , not the lame esporting we are being flooded with now..  However I have a gut feeling that SOE is going to cave in and try to appease the PvP crowd..

i agree but they need to have pvp servers like EQ did as well.

open pvp battles for camp/zone control is what i want and i don't care if they don't balance for pvp.

just as long as they change the way resists works and don't let better geared people resist every spell you cast on them.

World > Quest Progression

Thank you for starting this thread Nadia! More than any other game I think EQN will have tools and tech MMOs have not had before... Well, maybe EQ2 would have had some of them .  I hope, hope that EQN will have a world and tools to have a solid home again.

While the interview is not about EQN specifically Smed mentions SoE's games as a whole in which we all know EQ is the flagship.  Here is what got me excited:

You’ve mentioned a desire for more sandbox MMOs in your Reddit AMA, and sandboxes are obviously a major draw for Eve players. Do you have plans for adding sandbox elements to PS2, and if so, would you like to discuss them? If there really is an untapped market for sandbox MMOs, why haven’t we seen more of them, besides Eve and SWG?

Sandbox elements - SOE is redefining itself as a creator of emergent gameplay experiences. That's our future. You can call it sandbox but it's so much more than that. A good example is Player owned bases in Planetside 2. That's coming. We're going to make huge continents that are empty and have vast resources on them and players can fight it out and put down their own bases there and other players can come and obliterate them. Sound familiar Eve Players? Actually we had something like this in Star Wars Galaxies too. THAT is content. At some point as an industry we need to realize that we have already lost the race to outpace players in making content. I personally thought SWTOR was a great game. I loved Diablo III. The problem is you get to the endgame and as game makers it's not just expensive. it's impossible to stay ahead of the curve.

Think about this statement - If WoW had come out yesterday.. at what point would people be "done" with the content. We need to focus on game systems that are perpetual and give players a lot more control over what they can do rather than JUST putting yet another dragon in front of them with scripted content. We need to be doing both in order to be successful. And that's our plan.

World > Quest Progression

Here's a small nugget from June in a TTH interview with Georgeson about SoEMote:

"Wait until you see spellweaving in the next EverQuest," Georgeson teased. "I've said too much but you've never played a game like it. I can promise you that.

"We have two EverQuest games we can already use as testbeds for what we plan on with the next one. While we're doing that we're putting a huge focus on storytelling over the next year. We want characters to become memorable parts of the story arcs. We want to bring back the world to virtual worlds. This is a re-imagined Norrath. Think of the EverQuest games as three separate universes--a multiverse."

Um... Yeah... I've said for a while now that being able to cast via voice and swinging my own sword while standing would be an MMO "engame" for me.  Looks like part of that is not far off.  If what I'm reading into here is true and EQN will feature casting via speach (or mouth motion) it's not far fetched that quests could go back to "[quest trigger]" as something you speak rather than type.

/sigh, it's hard not to get too excited right?

I don't think you understand the strain on your voice it would cause if you had to speak every time you casted a spell.

Between spell casting and talking there would certainly be "downtime" lol, you're right about that. I highly doubt it would be an designed for use only with speech. Likely an option.

Planetside 2 has given me hope, it's a great engine and obviously able to do big seamless worlds that we haven't seen in years. Also SOE are actually doing a long beta and they're listening, so many things I've said have done, though I'm sure they were planned and other people have said them too.

I personally still don't like Planetside 2, it has a long way to go before it gets to playability levels, however it's on a solid foundation this time around. Frigging also Planetside 2 is so complex, I think it will have to be streamlined a bit, it's way too crazy with the mess of stuff they have on their UI.

...we're putting a huge focus on storytelling over the next year. We want characters to become memorable parts of the story arcs.

This is terrible news. In other words, they are making another single-player-focused game like WoW and the countless remakes that failed. MMO industry. Wake up call. We don't need to be the hero or the focus of the story. Don't coddle us; don't patronize us. Just create an interesting virtual world for us to explore.

EQ Next sounds like yet another example of the MMO industry not understanding its customers. "Incoming, an Epic Fail." Hope it doesn't cost as much as SWTOR.

Luckily, i don't need you to like me to enjoy video games. -nariusseldon.
In F2P I think it's more a case of the game's trying to play the player's. -laserit

Definitely agree. I would prefer if it was more like the original EverQuest II, you know back when it was a little harder and felt like an adventure. With seamless zones and improved graphics this would be a great game. But if they do it like we are seeing it will be another failure.

Hope they get it right. We could use a good game and they could use a success.

They don't need to streamline Planetside 2 any more than it already has been, they've already cut huge amounts out of it compared to Planetside 1, that 'streamlining' it any more would leave next to nothing, the game is already a huge disappointment, sure doesnt need more of that.
