The Machines invade Zion and pull the plug on The Matrix come July 31st, 2009. So, if you've not been back in awhile, it might be a good idea to check out the game one last time before it shuts down. All users have been raised to level 50 and are given 4,000,000,000 $info to mess around with.
The Matrix will be shutting down in similar fashion to the end of beta event, with a truly awesome world ending event. If you weren't there the first time, I highly recommend you experience it now, as I found it to be one of the most awesome, if not the best, end of beta events I've experienced.

Remember, anyone with a former subscription has been reactivated free of charge. Unfortunately, no new accounts are being accepted at this time.
For an example of what happened at the end of beta, check out this amusing clip.
I enjoyed the time I spent there. The potential for the innovative systems within the game were very interesting and the live events should be a lesson to other MMOs. But alas, the time for the code to return to the source has come.
R.I.P. - Matrix Online
SOE

"The Machines" won years ago. They've just been toying with their kill.
Well, spent all night patching the 2.6gb download. Logged in this morning, fought with remembering how to configure skills and abilities, and then use them as well as just how to play the game (it's been years), and jacked into the Matrix....
....there was 1 other person there. In 5 hours... I see 1 other player :)
So, after goofing around for about 5 hours and being glitch killed by invisible 'Corrupted' I remembered that the game totally sucks, and uninstalled it.
It's a bummer to see it shut down, but in my opnion, it's just another example of SOE failure.
They killed SWG, they killed Matrix, EQ is kind of dead, but EQ and EQ2 at least have a hardcore following, albeit a bit on the small side.
Can't wait for Star Trek and Star Wars MMOs to come out. Looking forward to trying them out.
Such love for SOE. The way I see it, as someone that played beta and bought the game at launch only to leave several months later, SOE is the only reason that the game didn't shut down years ago. This wasn't a good game at release and wasn't a good game when SOE stepped in so to blame them is a bit overboard, IMO.
To think that 5 days before the servers shut down would be the time to go through the hassle of downloading, patching, and configuring is well beyond too late. If anything, it's time to forget that it even existed and to focus on something new, something better.
I'm always sadden to see an MMO shut the doors but for me, in this particular case, I've been surprised for years that it didn't happen any earlier.
Goodbye MXO, I for one won't miss you anymore than I did the day I left so many years ago.
Who even remembers this game? Is anyone sad about it dieing? Only thing that bothers me is that another GREAT fantasy world has to die in the slaughterhouse called SOE. I dont care if the game was already broken when they bought it. They failed to restore it. RIP
