Do you think that this game may be successful in its current form which I believe is a pure themepark.

Like they say, it really opens up at level 50, when you can do pvp to keep structures, resources which is kind of meaningless in themepark, isnt it.

Or you can do dungeons with your friends. I have done hundreds if not thousands of dungeons in last 10 years. What will be the point of doing them in TESO? More powerful gear?Cosmetic gear? Will the gameplay be so great that it will make me want to grind even more dungeons? Is this the kind of game the point of playing which is "to have fun" which means that you just enjoy instant action whether it may be meaningless pvp or dungs / quests for gear.

What aspect of this game seems to promis longevity for you? Is it the PvP?

I do not mean to bash the game. In fact, I like some of its aspects (e.g. combat, art style) and I am kind of interested in how it turns out, but I am a little concerned with the endgame in this MMO. At the moment, I do not see the long term motivation to play this game. It just seems to be a little shallow to me.

Maybe it is too early to ask these questions, but do you have any opinion on this?

It looks like it will be fun for a month or two like most themeparks are nowadays.. I'll probably still check it out though.  I'm really hoping that I'm wrong.

longevity for me?  so far i'd say the pvp,  given that the zone is so big.  unless there are some sandboxish features added it will most likely be another 1-3 month game though.  at least for a lot of people. 

I think the prostitute mod corrupted your game files man. -elhefen

Right now, my point of view in the ESO game is going to be tradition themepark mmo with having Elder Scroll feeling, and have the features that we all know in most MMORPG, such as Raid, RvR, end game gear grind, Instanced zone game world. Other than that, I can't say much because the only information that I got are screenshots, some development rumours, and Intro ESO vid. Also the game is still in Alpha state, may be it will turn out in different way that we saw from Intro vid. So yes it is too early to discuss about this.

May be these questions are better to ask the press who have experienced from Alpha event.

Longevity is my biggest worry as well.  Until they add player housing and some form of Alternate Advancement system like Realm Ranks and a Darkness Falls type of dungeon I just dont see it lasting a month pass me hitting level cap.

 

I am the type of gamer who needs carrots, but those carrots shouldn't be gear grinds.

 

 

 

I am fascinated with their combat system (as long as the reticle goes over the head during combat stance) In awe with their leveling exploration centric system and down right amazed at the customization of their class system.  Nothing like any class being able to master any weapon and wear what ever type of armor you want, plus the ability to add points to your resource pools like Stam, Health and Magika to further give you freedom in player choice.  But alas I fear if the open world dungeons aren't good enough to warrant time spent on them then the game becomes a 3 monther.

If your idea of a Sandbox is open FFA Full Loot PvP, full crafted world with minimal support for anything combat then your sandbox ideas are bad! Sandbox means open world, non-linear gaming PERIOD!

I'll probably end up playing it, but I'm not expecting to be entertained for more than 6 months.

Currently playing: Divinity: Original Sin, FTL, Hearthstone and Skyrim.
Eagerly anticipating: Camelot Unchained, Elite: Dangerous, Legend of Grimrock 2 and Star Citizen.

The only thing that might make this game last longer for me is the 3 different level up paths. If it was open world PvP and you could quest/level up anywhere in the world it would probably last much longer. Not a fan of the ''end-game PvP in a few zones''. Also seems like all the different ways you can progress your character might make replaying the game more enjoyable. But yeah... don't see many months worth in the game.

I hope TESO has skill progression that lasts longer than the time to get your character level to 50.

I hope TESO has gear/item progression that lasts a LOT longer than the time to get your character level to 50 and skill progression to 100 (or whatever max per skill is.)

I hope TESO has PvE difficulty escalation and scale/size of conflict progression past 50 too.

But I've found I really like the dungeon/raid PvE item progression as long as the combat is fun, the character progression is nearly constant (no walls/gates) and the whole thing isn't too grindy.

So basically WoW with long term skill progression and different combat?

Long term gear / item progression - check (considering getting full BIS gear - (509 ilvl in MoP) in WoW takes months...quite many if you are not in top guild that clears highest tier raid on heroic difficulty).

PVE difficulty escalation - check

Some sort of OWPvP - check (not exactly increasing scale / size), maybe it will be more interesting in TESO than in WoW with all those constructions, resources, etc (as pointless I am afraid though).

Dont get me wrong, I am playing Warcraft, so I am not trying to insult you. I am just wondering how does what you described differ from WoW and similar games besides combat, IP, art style.

DAOC had more longevity than any other MMO, in my experience.. even Mythic utterly failed to replicate that, so not sure I should put any more faith in Firor. but guess there's a sliver of hope.  In some ways it does seem like this has more in common with DAOC than WAR did.

When I want a single-player story, I'll play a single-player game. When I play an MMO, I want a massively multiplayer world.

That's fine, I actually like the WoW/EQ model.

Combat, IP, art style are huge huge huge factors for me.

My dream super immersive ultimate sandbox AAA MMO RPG mega-awesome game will probably (certainly) never happen, so in the mean time I'm just playing stuff I get some fun out of.

And I like running instances and raids and gearing up and progressing my toons and unlocking new abilities and looking BA etc.

If ESO has housing too that'll be super sweet - I miss that from UO/SWG - though I think upcoming (Korean) Bless is doing housing RIGHT and I hope Western devs look it up and pay attention - though with ESO single-server it probably wouldn't work that way.

No, it will last a year, tops, as is.

If they unlocked the races from factions and factions from faction lands and added more dynamic RT combat then maybe they'd last longer but right now it is so limiting and doesn't embody the freedom of a TES game so the loyal fans of TES will get turned off after a while and the DAOC audience is not large enough to sustain a modern MMO.

You mean limping along without making back its budget and hemorraging money until it destroys the company(s) involved?  Yes agree with you.

Frankly, they are probably much too stubborn and egotistical to ever admit defeat on it, so it will die a slow, laboring death.

Neither of those games had a 300 mil budget or a 250 person staff.

Let's quick-math it.  If they sell the game for $60 and have a $15/mo sub fee, for argument's sake, they would need approximately 1.35 million subs sustained for one full year in order to BREAK EVEN on their investment, not to mention ongoing upkeep costs and overhead.  That seems, unrealistic to me.

If neither SWTOR nor GW2 can manage it, then it is silly to think ESO can in its current state.

This pretty much sums up my expectations, too. With the understanding that the "wrong" part is that EO is more than just a themepark and has long, virtual legs.

I make spreadsheets at work - I don't want to make them for the games I play.

you realize that the $300 mil isnt going directly into the game.  right?  it was invested into the game studio.  which includes constructing buildings,  including one in ireland.

If the PvP is meaningfull (which it sounds like its going to be) and they have a fairly quick turn around on getting new pve content out, then yes the game should have legs, especially as their progression model is meant to go beyond the cap in a meaningfull way

 

TBH tho I don't see what the big issue is, why do people care? As a consumer as long as there is enough content to warrent the box price (which there is bound to be as most games only have around 20hours of content, 30-50 for an RPG) and if there isnt anough content to last beyond the first month you can just stop playing.

 

Longevity is something for the devs to worry about as its there job to keep us playing, as a consumer my job is to consume the content provided and if there isnt enough to keep me playing, I just wont play anymore, no skin of my nose
