Guild Wars News - 2009 Coming Attractions

The folks at Guild Wars have laid out some of their plans for the Guild Wars Live team in the coming year, including several big updates in 2009.

Coming Attractions for Guild Wars Live

Six months ago, we assembled the Live Team with one goal: sustaining high quality support for Guild Wars. We started with smaller changes, getting our feet wet by balancing skills and tweaking AI. After these initial successes, we moved on to title balancing and the golem Hero M.O.X. before finishing off the year with new festival content. As the Live Team looks to the new year, we are streamlining our processes, where we can create even more exciting new features and content than ever before. In this Dev Update, we explain the reasons for some of these changes and reveal tidbits of what we've got planned for the future.

he's refering to the fact that it was supposed to be released this year but has been put back till 2010.

Finally yes more storage something I've been praying for for ages. However I wish they would tackle the lag problems that have been troubling me since wintersday as I'm at my wits end having done all I can do @ my end to reduce it!

Why the big announcement for almost nothing? Anet won't do anything big for GW1 anymore. Even skill balances are rare. They don't want people to enjoy GW1 anymore so that everybody who enjoyed GW1 as they remember it when they enjoyed it will buy GW2. I thought Anet was above the general MMO-mentality but I guess I should've known that everybody just pursues his or her maximum gains, even if that means making your fans angry and bored. Welcome to the real world...

They announced more content for a free to play MMO and you say thats because they dont want you to enjoy GW1?

And then you turn your own boredom with a game, into Anets fault. Where its new content that would be the only thing that could renew a bored player's interest.

LOL!

And then they also want you to buy GW2! And dont want any monthly sub for it. They must be truely evil ! Lets burn all those commercial companies and lets start programming games in our parents' basement again. Freeedoooommm!!

This is good news and it isn't nothing!  More account-based storage is a plus, more contents planned for exellent  free to play GW and updates to HoM is even more awsome.  True GW fans will appreciate what ArenaNet's doing ... like I do.  Thanks to Dev team.  Arenanet FTW

the additional account and character storage doesnt come without a cost for ANET. they did explain last year why it would be difficult/expensive to increase storage cuz they have to install additional servers and such

so with ANET doing all these for free is a very nice thing in my book
again they're not making money anymore from us veteran players, and the april update is more focused on players who've been playing for a long time

but april is too far away! i think they will make it coincide with GW's 4th year anniversary. 4 YEARS! and im still playing it!

With no GW2 this year they should give us some type of Expansion.

How long do they expect players to be playing the same old content?

I would pay 50 bucks for another Xpac with the amount of content as the last one.

Extra storage and HoM update = great

We have wished for extra storage for a long time so april is not far away. I am a little sad that we will lose the monthly skill usage charts (yeah I like those actually) but hey... Almost 4 years in and it is safe to say that NO other game have given me this much entertainment for such a small investment.

GW may not be a "real" mmorpg but it never really bothered me. In fact I love being able to play with a team of europeans, asians and americans without being "server/territory locked"

Anet did a lot of good with GW - Still does!
Even if I am afraid they will kill some of the great things about GW, trying to please the "real" mmo fans (persistant serverlocked "world") I am going to buy GW2 - If not for anything else then at least to say thank you for all the fun I had in GW

juz a repost of Linsey's reply i her wiki abt the Dev Update

Yes, we fully intend on releasing details of some features in development well before build day. I say "some" because we do want there to be some surprises, so it is unlikely that everything will get teased beforehand. Basically, we don't want players to be just sitting around twiddling their thumbs for months on end with no content updates. We really wanted to do updates this new way so that we would have the time to really sink our teeth in and get some bigger projects going but some of us were worried it would make players feel more disconnected from us or even worse, like we really have abandoned Guild Wars as rumor has it. Since what we are doing now is so far the opposite from abandoning this game, we wanted to deepen the connection players have to what we are currently working on. We did not list everything we are working on in the Dev Update because like I said we want there to be some surprises, but more importantly it is hard to tell right now which of those things will definitely be going in to the build. We really really really don't want to promise things that we will not be able to deliver on. It isn't fun for us and it isn't fun for you guys.

Shayne: I would love to give you the answers to those questions, but I don't even know them yet. There are still a lot of hurdles to get through on this stuff and I would hate to tell you something that later on turns out to not be true because of technical limitations we don't know about yet. We will announce details on the various features planned for release once we have final designs nailed down. That does mean that we will need time at the beginning of each builds development cycle to work out design details and technical limitations before we can release info, but please trust me when I say it is coming.

Aba Malatu: Again, we can't tell you guys things that we don't know yet but information will come in time. As to the question of "why? why now?", I ask "why not now?". I know that there are some things that we have said we could not do (like additional storage) but if we can actually find a way to prove that wrong, why not do it?

I wrote up a whole rant about this "damned if you do, damned if you don't" attitude I keep seeing as it completely baffles me that some people are actually annoyed to get what they want, but I'm going to just leave it in my head. But really, what's up with that? - Linsey Murdock talk 02:16, 17 January 2009 (UTC)

It is a fact that this update is nothing. I don't care how much it cost them, new servers etc. ... The fact is that Anet have been destroing the game since Nightfall expansion was out. The new introduced so called "hero" system totally vanguished the team play in this game.  It's a shame because it was such a fine game. Their efforts to make everybody happy so nobody play alone lead to everybody play alone cause all the noobs in the game now are playing with those bots .. And many other things. Heavy instancing in GW was slightly noticeable since there was always ppl searching for party. It was fun, a beautiful game.

Lets face it, GW is old (screwed from his own developers)  and is time already for them to give us something, at least one screenshot of what they are doing (if they are doing something at all)  of this Myth GW2. My opinion is that the fact that there is a still ppl playing it is because it's true, player love the game, they play it still mostly because of nostalgia, and "hope" for something better to be done. All expansions till now lead to one thing "dead" and "boring" game.

Of course i'm sure there is a ppl that have organized guild, they can affrot 8 ppl to play pvp almost every evening. But .. this is so rare i'm sure. And this so called "great pvp" of GW is still nothing if you don't have 8 ppl always avaialbe and military discipline to play. So ... for most of the gamers GW is dead, i looked at my guild list and there was no ppl entering from 2 months. If this is succesful formula i don't have words. And i can assure you that this ppl still playing online, me too.

Really, it's time to show us something of GW 2. We are waiting and it's better not to wait too long.

Whilst you may not enjoy the game in it's current form, saying that this update is "nothing" is a rather stupid thing to say. You may not like it, but that doesn't mean it doesn't exist.

Well tell me m8 what is it? Why you need more storage. Maybe because your now is full with things that you can't sell because of the total luck of economy of this game (which btw ... when it was such thing they destroyed it with the prices at the npc-s :) ) they have lowered the prices of all materials that was valuable and hard to get. The've destroyed the rarety of the items that you can get ... everything that you can imagine.

Maybe it's because if you want to sell something you have to spam in the chat like mad person and hope somebody need the stuff you have. Or your current storage is full with not so good looking (toooooo easy to get btw ) elite armor sets. :)

Why this storage mean something, when the gameplay in the game needs total change. It needs new game, they are right. So my point again - give us something.

Really, this will be my last post maybe. I don't want to annoy people or to take the things too serious. It's about a game after all but .. I had fun in GW.

It was a fun and interesting way to fulfill my free time. And that's why i'm really sad of it. In the last 2 years everything in GW start to look like some kind of comunism, which is everything else but not interesting, especially for an online game. I truly agree about the pvp system and i support it. There, everybody chances must be equal, you cannot have better gear that the other ppl has. This is the equal gameplay and you play pvp with your skills, reflexes and brain, not with items. But ... to destroy the whole pve in the game with light hand and to leave (the already hard accessible pvp only) it's a shame and total failure.

And this opinion about the free game is not valuable anymore. Cause the important thing is the quality. I would pay for gw2 if the game is good. But i really won't pay for GW ever, cause now is dead game where you have to play alone. Even Diablo 2 is better rpg in this matter.

After all .... maybe what the ppl say about the free games is true ... boring with no wish of their developers for something better.

Now it's just obvious you've failed to actually read the article.

Storage is one of many features that will be coming with the April update. They don't want to announce everything in case they can't deliver on certain promises for technical reasons, and also to leave some of them as a surprise.

Btw ... now i remember one of the most annoying things. One time there was a challenge. To get an elite skill you needed a sertain cooperative mission. You needed a party to kill a boss to get the elite, at least it was something. And what they did - elite tomes :D. Now you can just buy the elite skill in the chat :P and learn it even with lvl 5 character. Where is the challenge here? Where is the game at all? :P
