OP  1/03/13 8:11:13 AM#1

I have watched a few videos, read some articles about it, sat on the forums for a bit.

But I'm still not sure what there is to do with the game once I've gotten about half way through all my skills and all that.

I mean it can't be "Well I'm going to become a wushu master, then once I'm more powerful than anyone on my server I'm just going to go... and... ummm.... kill people... I suppose... random... ordinary... people.... for no purpose whatsoever."

I'm just not totally clear on what types of pvp there are, what pve aspects of the game there are that drive the reason to do anything in the game.

Age Of Wushu has alot of PVE content but it also has many other features. Their are many sorces of information about this game it,really isnt hard to find. I will say that i have moved from the US version to the russian which you can play in english. The russian version is way better than the US version of the game.

Thank you! That was as helpful as all the developer videos that explained that you do... Things! Yes, Things in the game! And you... do more stuff! Yes, indeed stuff!

It does, thats the only reason I'm posting here to find out if its worth a damn or just another "Looks great, feels great, but it mayaswell be a corvette in a suburban neighborhood with no roads that enter the city."

You do whatever you like. Murder, catch criminals, kidnap, rescue kidnap victims, duel, gather, craft, trade, explore, PvE, spy, patrol, steal from other schools, guild warfare, and so on.

The game gives you many options but it doesn't hold your hand. You're free to carve out your own path.

Unlike many post-wow western MMOs, this is a MMORPG. Think UO, early EQ or AC.

It's a living, breathing virtual world. What you do is, live in this world doing whatever takes your fancy.

If you are more into CoD style instanced PVP o LFD tools, well, wrong game.

It's a sandbox. Meaning you can do whatever you want. Sometimes this throws off people who expect things laid out for them, but it really is cool to set your own goals and ambitions and see them through. It just takes a bit of time to understand the game and what there is to do.

For example, I am trying to play a decent and upstanding character which means I signed up to be a constable and hunt down player criminals who either have bounties on their heads (from other players) or are well know bad guys (red/purple names acquired from lots of murder). I hang out in towns breaking up fights and preventing kidnappings, I escort caravans around the world, and when I'm done with that I spend time patrolling my school to protect it from spies (players from other schools).

At the same time I am trying to become a well-known herbalist by crafting good medicines and selling at the market and am trying to get a senior position in my school (by fighting others at the weekly school meeting).

That's just how I choose to play. You could be totally the opposite if you wanted, or somewhere in between. You could set out to win Wulin championships and be known for your kung fu skills, challenge NPC forces around the world, hunt down secret locations or random encounters (from clues given by NPCs), run forbidden instances...

Basically, you fight stuff or fight stuff or fight stuff.

You can also pick plants or craft as a side activity, but I haven't heard of anyone that doesn't just fight stuff as their primary activity.

Read countless posts/pages on this, tried the game out... don't see what all the 'sandbox' praise is about. I don't think its own fans know either, as most of the time when you ask for info they can't tell you a damn thing about the game and just tell you to go read a board or the game's landing page.

I don't think the publisher ever advertised it as a sandbox, just martial-arts themed MMORPG.

Perhaps professional(?) reviewers in the West is somewhat to be blame for using a "simplistic" labeling.

I am drawn to the game because I am partial to the Wulin theme and I am having fun in-game, but I would not called it a "true sandbox".

You know, there is no game that acctually functions like this. Unfortunatly this game probably doesn't either.

Every game allows you to do a certain set of things. In certain places and it's how it presents those places and things to you that count and how it rewards you for doing those things also counts just as much.

Why would I go out, and plant a fucking cabbage in this game, when I could just go out side and plant a cabbage in the real world. If I plant a cabbage in the game, do I get money? Do I get enough money to buy a glowing sword? How many cabbages do I need to plant to get said glowing sword?

Whatever takes my fancy? Am I allowed to do unspeakable things to the cabbage? Will I be arrested if I go out wearing the cabbage like a hat naked? Are there secretly hordes of people who do this in the game?

If noone can tell me whats worth doing in this game, then maybe I'll go get back on the post-wow western mmos, because atleast the goal of the game is clearly defined and understood by the community and not some obscure thing that hides behind the mask of the word sandbox.

Tbh I don't give a damn whether this game conforms to some sandbox purists private version of how an ideal sandbox should be.

AoW may not be the perfect sandbox but It has a lot of innovative features, it gives you a lot of freedom, it lets you interact with other players in several meaningful ways, it has a working economy, and above all it's great fun.

That's enough for me but I guess to some it's more important to define the true essence of sandbox than to enjoy games for what they are.

Meaningful how?

What sort of stuff is sold on the....

First of all is it the asian mmo style, player shops(<Haven't seen this style in forever, would be a nice change.) or western style auction house?

And what is generally sold in the market system they use? Whats a real money making commodity in the game? MORE CABBAGES?

What the fuck, did you do in age of Wushu today?

I went from quest giver to quest giver while the game took me through an extended tutorial after which I joined a school (which is sort of like choosing a class path). I then went through more tutorial type quests. It's taken about 3 hours so far.

SWTOR is the greatest mmo ever!

THANK YOU SIR, FIRST PERSON WITH SPECIFICS ALL DAY.

Though I expected that from a game thats so off from the norm that their tutorial would be long as hell.

It definitely gives you more freedom than the typical linear quest hub game that we've seen so much of lately.  This is going to be enough for many people.  The game being labeled this or that means absolutely nothing.  Treating players like adults with consequences for their actions is the main draw I have to this game.

OP I've not gotten to far in the game yet to give you much advice other than it appears to require socialization much more than many recent MMO's.

Be warned, the "tutorial" doesn't give you much of an idea of what the game is actually about.  And the quest translation is pretty funny it's so bad.  Be prepared to look online for some tips.

I noticed the developers say that a few times I wasn't acctually sure if I had to deal with people or just npc's because well I have no idea if they acctually mean for me to play diner-dash in an mmorpg or if I whisper someone naughty messages if I'll get experience for that.
