For those unfamiliar, this is the North American version of Age of Wulin.  The MMO that is based on the history of Chinese wushu or kung fu.

The North American version is being published by Snail games and here is the official website:

http://www.ageofwushu.com/

I imagine most MMOers here in the states are unfamiliar with this title, but it is probably the most anticipated MMO among the rest of the world right now.  It's the one where some eccentric guy in China paid $16,000 for a virtual sword.

If you have any interest in Chinese culture, martial arts, or heck, a fresh looking take on the MMO genre, you should check it out.  It is going to be free to play.

It is looking pretty impressive, but I cannot count how many times I have been excited by an upcoming MMO only to be let down, so it has taken a lot to get me excited again.  Hopefully it delivers.

The graphics look on par with what the industry is capable of, though I dont know whats fresh about an asian themed  martial arts MMO ala Crouching Tiger acrobatics.  Maybe I missed something.

My idea of something fresh is an enviornment and concept that hasnt been touched,  Both concepts in this game have been touched, hugged and excessively fondled.  Seems like they are just adding  more depth to two excessively deployed concepts. So just more of the same in larger doses in my opinion.

The "Age of Wushu" logo does not have the cameo of a tig bitted girl on it.  Quite refreshing...color me intrigued.

not a single one of those features is anything new, you can find atleast 1 or 2 of those feautres in games already out and in some you can find most of them, Aerial Combat is nothing new and running on water is laughable, i'll one up that i have played games where i can walk on water. The no leveling and no classes thing has actually been done quite a few times if you've played alot of F2P games. Martial arts schools are also nothing new, hell there were alteast 6 martial art type games in 2011 in asia alone. I say give the game a try, heck even i am gonna give it a try, but it has nothing i haven't seen before yet, ust another martial arts game.

OK fair enough.

I still want to see how it all comes together in this.

It's pretty hard to find things in a game that haven't been done before.  It's fairly easy to pick on individual features and say this was done already in xyz, but for me it is the combination of rarely used features, the setting, and a combat system that claims to reward skill by methods such as countering which make it fresh.

No game will ever win a 'fresh' argument (particularly on an internet forum) because depending how badly someone wants to nitpick, you could take it all the way down to... nothing new here, uses a keyboard and mouse.. meh, I'll pass.

As always, different strokes for different folks, this is looking fresh to me.

Snail Games is the same company that bought Dark and Light, now Savage Horizon.  I hope this works well for them but sure wish they would have got my old love out before this title.

Age of Wulin looked very intriguing to me.

I'll keep an eye on this... though I think I like Wulin better than Wushu :P

Haven't seen the 'wirework' in an mmo.  Could be worth keeping an eye on.

Though snail games don't have a good reputation.

Not yet.  Should be going beta soon and rumors seem to think it could be out in 3-6 months.

I shouldn't say this is the only MMO that is looking fresh, GW2 looks like they are trying for something innovative as well.  Looking forward to both.

My only concern is if this is a 'pay to win' cash shop.  $16,000 for a sword, I hope it's only because it is hella cool looking, because rich brats buying pvp dominance is a sure killer for any MMO.  I think it might only be cosmetic though because the other items that were sold were 'sheaths' which are I imagine are purely cosmetic.  If anyone has info on that sword and what is so damn special about it, please post, because I can't find the info.

Also, here is an excerpt from the feature list... seems pretty innovative to me:

Age of Wushu promises to revolutionize the way we approach combat in MMO’s. For starters there will be no cool downs on your abilities and combat maneuvers. Rather than going through a static rotation of skills that soon becomes stale, the player is free to choose their attacks at will. You’re probably thinking that sounds insane and will make combat a button mashing affair; think twice. Combat maneuvers will be paid for and regulated by the system of Qinggong. The Qinggong system is essentially a collection of points that you use to fund your combat maneuvers (along the lines of energy for anyone familiar with games like WoW). Player abilities will cost different amounts of Qinggong points and it is up to you to decide which ability is appropriate for your current situation. The effect of this system will be an overall increase in strategy, tactics, and combat more akin to a fighting game than your standard MMO.

Hmm, the chinese have gone all money crazy (what happened to communism, i wonder...) so they have no qualms at all with making their games P2W.... They consider it cool and "edgy."

I suppose that this $16,000 sword which causes such negative reactions in the west is considered a positive thing for the game in china... well not completely positive, but at least not as something that would brand the buyer as a no life loser and an idiot. I believe they see this whole thing as somewhat awe-inspiring and a bit scary (forbidden fruit scary) rather than simply pathetic like we do.

If this game wants to succeed in the west it must adapt culturally, just like WoW had to. If WoW had monthly subs in China, it wouldn't have gone far. The same goes in the opposite direction.

They have 3 options imo and P2W is not one of them

1) P2P

2) B2P

3) cosmetic cash shop

No. 3 is not going to pull in enough money, and I believe that P2P is a dying model. They should try for B2P with paid expansions like GW, imo that's the way of the future, at least in the west. Here we consider buying in-game advantages for money "dishonorable," though I understand that might seem strange to modern chinese.

some people dont understand that the $16k sword is very popular and epic in chinese culture (novels, movies, etc etc.)

if you were a chinese and had the money you woulve bought them too.

this game is not a typical f2p game.

this is a AAA+ f2p game, high class quality game, not a cheap asian mmo.

their company said that theyre not planning to sell any items with +stats in auction,

only skins/cosmetics. so that'l make it feel like a p2p.

warning for the players who have cheap, old and not so good pc, you wouldnt be able to run this game smoothly.

this game is heavy, lot of resources and stuffs.

the req would be a bit above average too.

the diff from high quality to low quality gfx is totally a diff game.

lots of skillssss like crazy.

lots of things to do.

pvp here is based on (player)skills. so if you love pvp, this is the game for you.

not like other games pvp where u just spam skills, pots spam button real hard and win.

you use tactics here and strategy, more like knowing how to use your combo.

It is also an adventure, because you search, find and learn your skills all over the world.

be a great adventurer to lvl up your skills + mastering your stuffs = win

theres also like a War Of emperium (WOE from ragnarok online) or Club wars from ran online

where your guild can occupy any of the 8 mountains and fight for it.

so thats hella fun.

-played aow cbt china.

Much like the first news of it, I was buying into it untill I saw the "fighting game features" that make combat more like dynasty warriors online or the like..

[Mod Edit]

No offense but settle down as grinding can mean grinding levels, to gathering, to training your skills on mobs as you fight endlessly to improve. Looking at tsw which has a no classes or levels does have exp  to gain points to puchace powers for yoru character.  Also right from the feature page on mmorpg.com "No Leveling, No Classes | Gaining experience is accomplished in one way: fighting!", which implies you will either gain increased power via using yoru attacks in combat, or you gain ep from killing mobs that are used to purchase new attacks or upgrade others you have. Both of those are a form of grinding as you need to do a repetitive action such as fightng over and over to progress in power, just not havving lvls or classes does not exempt a game from being a grind, but what will be interesting is how much of a grind it is.

I have to wonder what this will accomplish. o.O
