If you call them, you can get this sorted out.  My CC didn't support the 3d stuff they want, but you can get it added manually by calling them.  Was like a 5 min wait when I did it 6 months ago, and only took like 4-5 mins to do.

Just got off the phone with SquareEnix guys, they said they couldn't add it.  I'll have to call the bank on monday.  Thanks for the tip anyway, greatly appreciated.

I'm not sure there's a way to manually install patches. it has always been a painfully long wait for those patch files to update. If you scour the internet and find anything on manually installing patches, might be worthwhile to post about it here as there are alot of people going through the patch process at the moment.

As for all the people asking about starting later, There are a lot of us willing to either level jobs or do the level drop thing, so there will be plenty of people to level with no matter when you are starting

Classes or Jobs as they're called in XI do matter for the lower/mid ranged content, but once you get into Abyssea 75+ you can have parties consisting of anything and easily succeed.

You don't need tanks, nor do you need dedicated healers, cause mobs die so fast {even massive 18-man allaince NMs can be 2-shot by solo players now with the Primeval Brew that gives a player the effects of Transcendency}and you earn so much XP, that if one does fall, you get a raise and just sit out until your sickness if over, 8min and you're still getting so much XP that you have what you lost back 100 fold before you're ready to rejoin the alliance.

Abyssea has changed the entire way that one plays XI, and if you're lucky and have an LS that will let you join at lvl 30 you can be lvl 75+ in just a few hours, and lvl 90 in a few days, though it does take a few more hrs...heh

If you like story and lore though, FFXI has the best ever and its worthy of a playthrough for that alone.  It'd prolly take you months to get through all the story XI offers and its all so very well done.

wow, is this true? you go from 30-75 in a few hours? that sounds...crazy!

Yep it's true.

It's also just one part of why I have finally hung it up with FFXI, after 7+ years playing and swearing by it.

They've taken a deep and engaging experience where progress mattered, improvements to your character mattered and had to be earned... and reduced it to being all about leveling as fast as possible.

I went back to XI for a time after Abyssea and, in the 4 days I was back everyone pretty much agreed that it was pointless to do any other content, and I should just do Abyssea. When I asked what the deal with Abyssea was, the number one answer was some variation on "You can level so fast there!". I'm not joking nor exaggerating. No one could say what the story was, what anything else about Abyssea was... except that you could levels really fast.

And here I was hoping that increasing the cap to 99 would mean another 24 levels of deep, interesting content, storylines, settings and interesting challenges like they gave us with Zilart, CoP and such... Nope. Just 24 levels of "grinding levels at absurd rates".

At least I got to enjoy it when it was still good (to me anyway).

Best of luck with your endeavor though :)

Just did a search for him and am not finding him in the list. I'm on Titan just running around doing fetch quests atm. I'll keep a look out for you both, name's Solemn if you get to me first.

Im almost sure on re subbing, but won't do it will march 2. (dont want to be billed for february ><)

Not sure about a world transfer to titan quite yet, if i reactivate ill probably wait to xffer if i do.

I also considered getting a copy off steam as well. Cheap enough to enjoy untill march 2 and maybe i can dump my xtra account on a RL friend =P lets see how long the sale lasts and if i buckle and buy it.

I'm all for this idea! My wife and I used to play FFXI back in the day, but life got busy for us and our whole linkshell, with jobs and college and stuff. We all just kinda went our separate ways. I never did find a game quite like this one, and the idea of jumping into such a social game with nobody to play with is what kept me away.  So glad I stumbled into this thread.

I had no idea what Steam was. Five bucks, jeez. I jumped all over this.

Anyway, it's downloading now. I still need to patch it and stuff, but once all that is done and I'm in game, I'll post on here again with my name and figure out how to get a hold of somebody. How exciting!

M y problem is that my cc is not 3-D secure code whatever. It was too late for phone support and I will have to wait until monday to get aligned. I'm still in, just can't log in.

I remember that playonline was a nightmare. Guess I will wind down in Rift, retire my toon and jump right into FFXI.

And its cool to see a mithra in full AF1 armor, or is that AF2?

2 Khrymson: And I see the almighty sword of gluttony on your left. Wow, you are really taking me back. I left FFXI after 2 years for wow (shame) with a decked out Galka 65 PLD/WAR; with a SoG, Jelly ring and some crazy shield of tankeness. I might go back to tanking, however is the tank of choice still WAR/NIN? That was when I left, was one of the reasons why I left. It was getting hard to get groups for sky. I was thinking about rolling into RNG/NIN or THF/SAM, what is the better classes in demand?

Oh,oh...just had a flashback...the quest for my airship license...3 days for a chocobo to talk to me...Artifact armor coffers...waiting 3 hours for a HNM to spawn too have it aggroed by a bot...LFG for 2 hours in Jeuno...

Nay, WAR/NIN is like huh what!? {unless you look at end game where everyone is /NIN, though thats not really the case as much anymore}  Especially since both THF{83} and DNC{20} have the dual wield trait now.  Well I've seen it a few times if ya can't find a tank, but the premier tank as always is still the PLD/WAR.  Bird PTs in East Ronfaure{S}{36-42} and several locations in the ToAU areas {55-65} are extremely popular to lvl on cause they're super squishy and die so fast.

However they hit multiple times in rapid succession and hit very hard and a NIN's shadows get worn through very fast and just can't take the damage like a PLD can.  Even playing as a PLD myself on birds sometimes they come close to killing me with some attacks.  Now when it comes to certain NMs and 18-man alliances, and other huge bosses you'll still want a NIN for some of that, while others require a PLD still.

All-in-all I don't like NIN tanks, PLD are the best to me, the truly premier tank regardless...

Well, I'm all patched up and in the game. Got the controller working and the graphics looking nice!

My characters name is Lafein.  I'll try to get a hold of somebody or if you catch me first that's cool too. Just gonna run around and explore and do fetch quests and stuff to try to get reaquainted with the game.

Guys, just a heads up. I believe the Steam Sale ends tomorrow. So if your on the fence about it, tomorrow will be the last day to get the ultimate collection for 5 bucks. I think D2D still has it for 7 something however.

Just so that I'm clear, if I've never played before and I download the steam version, I get 30 days free, regardless of when I register on PlayOnline, correct? I keep reading people talking about not wanting to pay for only the rest of this month, so I want to make sure I avoid that.

I've been waiting for the old republic, but have been thinking of going back to FFXI. I think my character may already be on Titan so will hopefully see you guys once this gets installed.
