I agree with the idea to have two separate servers though, one is to generate the revenue by giving people their theme park, and the other is the actual game which serves a more niche market. I only hope the devs deliver half of what they are promising. So many crowdfunders and kickstarters have crashed and burned, I would hate to see it with this, as it has such vision. The normal server isn't a themepark...
The "Normal" ruleset is the baseline functionality. You can not loot dead players in the normal ruleset, and there is in fact very little penalty for death. We want to encourage players to participate in PvP by focusing on the fun, rather than penalizing players for being killed. The Normal ruleset employs Active and Reserve military system which modifies where a player can kill or be killed
No consequences + PvP flags sounds like a theme park to me
Oh wow so SWG (where you had to flag yourself as overt to do open PVP) was a theme park? Learn something new everyday.

It was sand box with theme parks. Jabba's palace was a theme park, the imperial lines, and rebel lines, theme parks. The game itself was a complete sandbox. People get confused on how to 'label' games. SWG was a sand box with theme parks you could do or not do as you so desired, they were not required at all. So complete sand box. Optional PvP has no bearing on sandbox or not.

If you want a new idea, go read an old book.

Imperial Phalanx will be going hardcore! Open PvP games/servers add an entire new layer to the game with politics, and in this game hardcore will probably have a better economy.

The OP is clearly in favor of the hardcore server and is trying to use this thread to bait people into playing that.

Kind of silly to even try.  Like anyone is not going to see through this and say oh, you are right and clearly unbiased.  I will change my mind.

I'm sure he is in favor of the hardcore server, but for the most part he has been simply clearing up common misconceptions between the server types, most notable surrounding hardcore. For example, most "MMO gamers" hear player looting and think of losing the gloves they spent 3 months farming for, but that's not relevant in a game designed for this type of game play.

Very excited about the Repopulation - any game with the spirit of SWG gets my attention.  Definitely going with the pve option.  I'm fan of the themepark games with a splash of sandbox; for me, that's the right balance.

I also can step away from the keyboard, and the pve server would allow my character to be risk-free unattended, which is important (for me, at least).

I'm not all the good at pvp, so I tend to craft.  Mostly, pve provides a better marketplace, as PVPers tend to put on the cheap gear which they can afford to lose, and pve'ers are more willing to invest in top-end gear (better crafter margins).

So, while I'm excited about this game, this thread gives me a bit of pause.   Glancing through some of the posts responding to others, there is definitely a mean and rude streak.  Hopefully that does not represent the majority of the Repopulation community.

Pretty much this. I do favor the hardcore server and I made this poll in order to see how many that view this site are interested in that server type. Why? because I want to try and figure out if the hardcore server, with the existence of the normal server, can reach critical mass. I think it will.

That said, there are certain things that are enhanced., especially in the political realm, by the hardcore server's rule set and I feel that anyone interested in the game should understand that.

I think you underestimate the market meaningful territory control can create for a hardcore server. People will use any advantage they can get to "play to crush" and a dedicated crafter who can tailor gear for very specific builds will find a constant market due to gear destruction. On the PvE server, unless gear degrades very quickly  and can't be repaired, people won't need to constantly obtain gear. 1 set will last a long time and thus put downward pressure on the crafting market.

I also think you underestimate the power of the guards in safe zones on the hardcore server. These guards sound like they'll operate much like guards in 1.0 sec space in EvE. If you get attacked in the npc towns the person who attacks you will get instantly killed.

Someone please correct me if i am wrong but I believe the hardcore server is not going to be in at launch but will be in the game if the normal server does well.

This is not correct. The hardcore server will not be available during alpha, but it will be opened during sometime in beta. The reason for this is that they want to get the basic core systems in place working before testing the hardcore rule set. From J.C, Smith, when I asked him when the server would go live:

"Hardcore won't be available during Alpha 3, at some point prior to launch it will become available. We want to make sure to work out all the major kinks before we try to integrate a second branch of code."
