But honestly I'm hesitant to drop a hundred dollars on a game I've never tried, I think that's the problem with kickstarter. It's a leap of faith. I've just been burned too many times by it... the game comes out and it's a big turd lol *cough Roma Victor*

Don't then. Although I love the sound of the game, I'm not an investor. I don't have faith in the kickstarter system. If the game gets made and I enjoy a free trial, then I'll buy it. I'm not prepared to be be one of those people that pre-orders without playing any game, then ends up moaning about how it didn't live up to their expectations based upon a paid-for review. |

Originally posted by daveospice Yeah it's definitely a risk.. I went through all sandbox kickstarters I could find and researched them. I wanted to risk it and back just one. I went with The Repopulation. The dev team is amazing and is very open about everything they are doing. Also they said open space adventures is something they are working towards adding post launch. All in all it sounds like a perfect MMO. Open seamless world sci fi sandbox. "Inside all of us is an adventure.." |

There's a difference between a risk and a pledge. You only pledge money that you're willing to give away and expect little or nothing personally in return (aka doing a good thing to help someone else). A risk means you are doing something for yourself that may backfire on you. Make sure the money you're giving them is entirely disposable to you before pledging it.

What I mean in terms of risk is that I'll end up supporting the wrong people. I've supported a lot of sandbox games. Wurm, Xsyon, etc... but a lot of them over promise, try to add too much at the beginning instead of just releasing a smaller, polished product with the intention of adding more then it dies and the game ends up being a waste due to poor management, bad PR and such. If the game is going to succeed, then the money isn't a risk. It survives. I invest with the full intention of actually being able to play and enjoy the game, if it is something I'm interested in.

I actually invested 100 bucks for this Kickstarter. The only time I've done it. I'm a big sandbox lover at heart, and also loved SWG. It seems to take some good parts from that game as well. I have rly high hopes for this game. But I guess you should see it as charity. Cause it might just as well end up as a complete mess.

The idea of kickstarter is just silly to me. Maybe if I had money to burn, but I'd rather spend on games in the here and now that can stand on their own two feet. I work hard for my money, and my real life 'investments' provide monetary returns.
But hey...I support the idea of everyone throwing money at stuff. Who knows, maybe something good will come from it. |

I see it like going to the cinema. I spend 8 bucks on a ticket ... not knowing if the movie will be any good. If it was, cool. Same with theater ... wasted a lot of money on crap performances, but also enjoyed some incredibly good ones.
One thing that makes this game different from others to me is that the owners have been building and funding it from their own pocket so far .. and look at how far they have gotten. Where big publishers make games for money, they make it because they want to make a fun game. You pledge not to pay for these guys, but to help finish the game they envision.

Originally posted by MarlonB Its more like buying a ticket 4 years in advance based off a plot outline for a sci-fi epic, knowing that its got an amateur director, will have a bare bones crew, cheap, no-name actors, and a non existent special effects budget. Yeah, its possible they pull off something amazing, but there is a strong chance you are paying for Plan 9 from outer space part 2, if the project even gets finished. |

The reward is different too ... while the movie will most definatly end after 2 hours ... this could be a game that will entertain you for much much longer. The Repopulation - Scfi Fi Sandbox. |

Originally posted by MarlonB I love that movie. I also see pledging for The Repopulation, regardless of the outcome as a statement. I'm tired of the games I've seen published lately. I want something new. These guys are willing to make it. Instead of just waiting for someone to magically come along with the game I want to play, I'm paying to help make it happen. To me it's a win/win. I get a game I want to play, they get the money I would have spent on games that I didn't want to play.

I was about to give up on MMO's altogether and move on. SWG was the last MMO that I very much enjoyed. Reading and researching about the game for many, many hours has given me hope that I will again really enjoy a MMO. I pledged and will also support the development in any way I am able to.

The Dev team is pretty awesome for The Repop. I mean, the Entertainer line, that was totally a player request based on some offhand mentions by old SWG players. That in it's self is pretty wicked.

Maybe they'd get more money if they had a paid beta? It wouldn't be without precedent.
Oh how I miss Precu SWG... |

I'd also say take a look at The Repopulation forums. There's a full thread of folks who are coming from SWG. You may want to talk to some of them. You never know, you may catch up with old friends. I didn't play SWG Pre-CU so I can't really give an opinion.
