The game map = The Crusader Road which will be fully that size at Open Enrollment in a few years:

However, at Early Enrollment the map will be a portion of that size and increase in hexes over the months in line with steady population growth.
The map size is fairly important to the game in terms of player population density, number of groups, settlement sites (limited) and territory different size settlements need to control to be able to run and improve their infrastructure and of course fight over!

The point of the Towers is a sort of POI territory control for players to contest and channel their pvp focus before the Territory control settlement aspect of the design is fully up and running. It's a stop gap to focus player's pvp around strategy than mayhem...
