The most recent concept in development for Planetside is Merit Commendations:

Commendations will be awarded to players, based on successfully meeting certain objectives. The system is intended to provide some context to the various actions that players take in the game and award them for hitting certain milestones in the character's life. The game servers will keep track of various achievements that a player makes. These achievements may take several forms, including: Number of kills: A straight up measure of the number of kills a player makes.  Successful use of equipment: Whether this is for killing others with a specific weapon, successfully reviving with a medical applicator, or hotdropping troops from a Galaxy.  Territorial Achievements: Awarded for successfully capturing or defending certain facilities, or facilities on certain continents.  Time: Commendations for long-term service to one Empire, perfect attendance, etc.  Combinations: Commendations that are earned by earning a combination of two other commendations.
