PlanetSide News - Fan Faire Update

Posted by Jon Wood on Aug 14, 2007  | 15 comments in our forums

MMORPG.com Staff Writer Carolyn Koh was recently in las Vegas for this year's SOE Fan Faire. While there, she dropped in on a panel being held by the folks from Planetside for their players.

If the panel presentation was anything to go by, Planetside fans are in for a treat as the team revealed their plans for future of development of the game. The team, as it stands, is pretty young. Glenn Snyder has only been in the position of Producer for three months, Scott McDaniel has been Senior Artist for six, and Adam Blomcheck has been with Planetside for a little over a year. The ideas that were revealed though, showed a dedicated team that is excited about their game. Compared to previous FanFaires, where the number of Planetside players attending could be counted on the fingers of one hand, this session netted about 25 players and would-be players.

"You may have heard something about Black Ops," said Glenn as they launched into what was coming with the next game update. "They are some guys in green, of a neutral faction that will cause some havoc in game, and they will be played by players."

The problem with Planetside is the fact that every base is the same and your just fighting in the same place in the same battle everytime and noone ever wins so it's all pointless. Also FPS games don't age well and Planetside just plays soooo badly compared to upto date FPS games.

Is it as pointless as your post? Seriously man way to go off topic.
I agree with most of what your saying, but that wont stop me playing something I enjoy as it doesn't with many other people.
Up to date FPS games are not MMO, this is, that's why people still play it.

On their description of the Phantasm: 'pea shooter' my arse! The Prowler chaingun is a pea shooter, this thing kills almost as quickly as a mosquito does. Why put a gun on a cloaked transport vehicle!? it doesn't make sense, what did they think it would be used for other than farming clueless grunts. I do like all the recent updates (with exception of the shadow turret) but they really need to just remove the Phantasms gun and make it lock-onable by AA.

Well, no every base is not the same, there are 5 topside base varients, and 3 underground base varient's, spread over 18 MASSIVE maps with 6-18 Bases on the maps. and really in the end, when you break it down, playing any game can be seen as pointless, but Planetside is fun, so we continue to play. and Jim you are correct, the phantasim is overpowered, however the devs have said it will be reevaluated. and as Carolyn wrote, 1100 players were online on the one battlefield for that event, no other FPS competes with that.

Please could someone of interested players or devs tell me, what does it mean "tripple the pop cap in the zone" in numbers? How many players were on one continent in one moment? What was the gameplay in that while (was framerate acceptable)? If i count it correctly... there were 800-1200 charcters in one epic battle

I am fully enjoying the changes and updates the dev team have brought in since March and applaud this new teams efforts.

I want to get on the Black Ops team :)

The dev team are listening and implementing what their players are asking for, the recent lattice change as proof.

PS is getting a facelift with all these new additions, its worth giving the game a trial.

30 day keys are available at planetside syndicate and planetside universe and I think they will be bringing back some kind of fodder program again.

the only thing that will save planetside is planetside two it was a fun game and one of the best mmofps ive played to date however that was along time ago. someone already touched on how you can never win and stuff and he was right on target the games good but the way the fighting is setup is stupid and not meant for an mmo with a monthly fee its like paying 15$ a month to play bf2 so not worth it.

make a 2nd one or make the game free with advertising then youll see the old playerbase come back. i myself have several br23's cr3-5 toons in each nation however i refused to pay 15$ a month for bf2 along time ago.

BTW I was wondering why the in development page on the site hadnt been updated and now i know its cause they brought on noob devs to replace the ones who left a game thats been dead and whos publishing company manages to con noobs into subscriptions for games that suck.

I haven't checked this game out in a while (since I got my 3 year vet badge earlier this year), so I'm excited to see they're still updating and adding stuff to the game.  Just may resub to see it all  :)

The new devs are breathing more life back into the game and they seem really excited about it. I've been playing for 3.5 years and it is still the most fun I have in any game. No FPS can match the numbers PS has and the variety of things to do and places to fight. Running with a dedicated crew makes it even better with the squad/platoon based system. And there is no better PvP out there in the MMO world.

The Phantasm is a little overpowered, but overall it is a nice addition. The Gunship needs more armor.

Name me one mmorpg in wich you can actually "win" the game....

On the other things i could agree , but planetside is still the only MMOFPS so as long as it doesn't have competition i find this one the best FPS to play.
