PlanetSide News - PlanetSide Sequel in Development

Posted by Michael Bitton on Sep 28, 2009  | 33 comments in our forums

While no official announcement has been made just yet, just about all signs point to the development of a sequel to PlanetSide.

The rumors first started as a story broke over at PlanetSide Universe that SOE had been sending out survey e-mails to PlanetSide players seeking their input on the development of a PlanetSide sequel. Soon after, it was confirmed that the domain www.planetside2.com had been registered (which now points to the official PlanetSide website). And finally, a comment from SOE President John Smedley on the future of PlanetSide, "Planetside fans will be happy We have big things planned in the next 12 months. We're working on something new that's really cool. "

An excerpt from the e-mail being sent out to PlanetSide players:

Help Us Design the Next PlanetSide Game

That's right, you heard what we said! We plan to expand the PlanetSide universe with another game and we need your help with the design. After all, who knows the game better than you, our customers, the people who actually play it! Don't worry about the original PlanetSide, it isn't going anywhere.

We want to hear your opinion and to do so we have put together a short survey. The information you provide will play a critical role into helping guide the development and direction of the next hit Massively Multiplayer Online First Person Shooter. As a loyal player and experienced shooter fan, we value your input and look forward to hearing what you have to say.

Help SOE design the next PlanetSide, take the survey here!

SOE could have a massive winner, considering they have a large edge with Planetside.

They have a brand name (Planetside, not SOE obviously) quite a lot of people like.

They have experience running the client and PS.server software required for an MMOFPS.

They have a Planetside community ready to spread the word, be experienced beta players and give constructive criticism.

But in all seriousness, this is great! I hope they do the game justice this time, I never stopped loving PS, they  just stopped adding content and you can only do something so much before it starts to wear on you.

Just hope they have common sense to make sure if they bring back BFRs they keep them in check, and you know they update the game more then every 2 years. But PS on a modern engine, with the past experience of what worked and didn't work being thrown into the mix? YES PLEASE!

This is hands down, the best move SOE could possibly make.

If you ever mention Planetside in a group of gamers who played it, expect this...

I can't sum it up any better. I have hundreds of friends and guild mates who still talk about the glory days, the big battles and all the awesomeness that was Planetside (before the CC expansion and Tonka Mechs).....

With this news, we have already sent out heads up, that feeling of getting the band of brothers back together.... I relish for that kind of action and excitement again....

Planetside 2 sounds good as long as they don't stray from what was great about it.

  1. Massive battles
  2. Tactics of many kinds from Outfits, squads and solo alike.
  3. Vehicle Air/Land/Sea combat and how well it meshed with infantry combat.  MAX suits yes, BFRs no.
  4. One world with continents is fine, don't need multiple "worlds"
  5. Mobile spawning is a must.

New things Planetside 2 should have not in any particular order.

  • Great Art and Animation > cutting edge Gfx tech.  I don't care how good the engine is if those are are not there it doesn't work.  Not to mention the lower the Gfx tech, the more people that can play without having to upgrade.  To me WoW, Half-Life 2 and other similar older techs and how they look are ok.  Perhaps something a little better but not needed if the game play is there.  Granted I don't believe a cartoon like look belongs, but rather just the lower tech that can look great.
  • Physics upgrade - Just a little physics goes a long way to creating great moments.
  • As few servers as possible, just a lot of battles on different continents.
  • NPC Faction?  Not near as important if server pop levels are high but that is one thing that hurt PS is when population was low it was no where near as fun.

I do hope they go subscription based again.  The whole F2P+shops scares me.   The only way F2P games work for me is if what can be bought is either cosmetic or just gets you there, max battle rank or whatever, faster.  I do not like the idea of characters being better in the long run because the can spend money on things others can't get unless they do.

In the end I am just very happy to see they are at least entertaining the Planetside 2 idea.

Essentially use the original planetside (with balance tweaks) as the design. Not the silly stuff like BFRs that got added in later.

For once I'm excited about the possibility of a new MMO.

Not the best start when one of their poll pages says list the following in order of importance (1-15) and then there are 16 options......

Just giving them trouble, it's nice that they're at least pretending to take in user interest up front. Will be interesting to see if they use it or not.

Hands down the most fun I've had in any MMO.  One reason why I'm looking forward to Global Agenda.  Hey, at least it might be close to re-capturing the essence, who knows.  However, if Planetside2 is for real, I'll be the first in line to sign up.

LOL, I saw that too and forgot to mention it in my previous post.  That was pretty funny actually.  Yes, not a good way to start.

Oh well, numbering them from 1 to 16 worked anyway.

For the record: Planetside2.com was already a registered domain. The original owner of it was contacted by legal authorities and was warned to turn over the site to SOE immediately or face legal actions. Soon afterward it was changed to redirect you to planetside.com and then we started receiving the emails.

It will be interesting to see where they go with it. PS is my main game and has been for 6 years, so I have mixed feelings.

The problem I see is they will want to buff the graphics big time to get the 'ooh pwettty' crowd and this will take away the main draw for me. PS is the only mmo I've played that actually 'felt' like an fps and the dated graphics are how they can achieve this.

On the survey for priority emelments, I had to put 'anti-hack' 3 times I hope they get the message.

Curious to see how they can make a sequel without closing down the original.

Everquest and Everquest 2 are completely different games, would Planetside 2 be any good if it was completely different to Planetside?

While this sounds like interesting news, when did SOE start believing their customers know best? Also, a bit skeptical of any promises from them just based on past experience.

I'd love to see this game succeed, but for now I'll be cautiously optimistic :)

As Darkfall took some pointers from Planetside and come up with some good features, SOE must take a look at Darkfall working concept and apply its good points to Planetside 2. Bases clans can build and defend so it a game of territorial control, not endless base to base hopping like Planetside 1 that got repetitive in the end. Make it a RTS where players fill the roles, so there resources gathering, protecting and escorting. Let the players create the wars between them and control the land to be fought for.

That's funny because I put that three times as well in the comment section at the end of the survey.  I put something like:

"Anti-hacking, anti-hacking, and oh, by the way, did I mention anti-hacking?  That's one of the top reasons I am not playing."

Also, I agree and hope they don't make it too pretty.  That just lowers performance and increases desktop crashes.  Make it playable!

Funny you say that. If you actually posted the first year of Planetside in the forums and talked with the Developers, they already ahd this idea. They wanted to implement it but were all reassigned to different projects.

The good ideas have been at SOE all alone. They just need to weed through the BS cry babies and go for the jugular this time around. Forget what they thought they knew, and move on to what we have been telling them for 6+ years....
