Yes, you can buy mechs/equipment. You also get a pretty amazing set of starting equipment, and can earn anything with the in-game currency...which isn't all that difficult to come by. There are no overpowered weapons, just different styles of weapons...the game - in its current iteration - is "pay for convenience", not anything close to "pay to win".
