Pirates of the Burning Sea News - New E3 Devlogs

Posted by Richard Cox on May 14, 2004  | 0 comments in our forums

There are three new Devlogs from Rusty and Misha over at Flying Labs Software concerning E3:

First up is Rusty's talking about the last minute invitation to E3 and setting everything up before opening day:

Twas the Night Before the Expo

Rev and I had a very busy day today. I got to bed last night at about 4:30 am (final polishing on the build), and had to get up at 8:30 for my flight. Yuch! We arrived in LA and immediately went straight to the convention center and the Nvidia booth. This was the first time that we'd seen the machine, the specific version of the card (the 6800 we tested on last week was slightly different) and could test the network connection.

Coming out of the gate, the good news was that the internet connection was very, very fast. We were downloading from a Microsoft site at 1.35 megabytes a second! The bad news was that the game crashed immediately upon startup.

I've been too a lot of shows, and my experience is that this often happens, and it's always a missing file, a wrong setting, something stupid like that. You fix it in about 5 minutes, and we chat about it over dinner ("Man, I thought we were doomed!")

Misha posted a Devlog concerning how chaotic the entire ordeal has been:

E3 = Chaos

So much for the tedium mentioned in my last log. The last-minute invitation to go to E3 turned everything on its ear! Dev dropped the regularly scheduled feature work and went on a rampage fixing graphics bugs and implementing new graphics pseudo-features. Chaos reigned. Check-in mail flew by faster than spam on a hotmail account. The Devs hopped back and forth between Rev's desk and their desks, looking at partial builds of what they'd done, running back and tweaking some more.

And finally Rusty has another Devlog discussing E3 Day One:

E3 Day One

We arrived just in time for the show this morning, armed with the guest passes that Nvidia had given us. Unfortunately, it turned out that there was a line a mile long to get your guest pass. So it was a little after 11 before we finally got to the booth and could start up the game.
