Pirates of the Burning Sea News - Two new DevLogs and an Interview!

Posted by Richard Cox on May 02, 2004  | 0 comments in our forums

Two new DevLogs and an interview are available over at the Pirates of the Burning Sea site for your reading enjoyment:

First up is Rev's new DevLog concerning design specs:

Specs and More Specs

In recent weeks, I've been tackling issues such as lanterns, forts, flags, surrender, viewport UI, bailing water, crew allocation, GM tools, in-game maps, and terrain. In many cases, this means revisiting issues we worked on last year, bringing a fresh perspective and some hard-won experience in what our game is becoming. Here's a quick look at some of the issues I've worked in within these various specs.

You can read the full DevLog here.

Next up is a new DevLog from Misha discussing the Highs and Lows of testing:

It's Like Vegetables

What do other testers find exciting about stage 2? Well, did I mention Dev is working on new features? If you?re in this because you?re passionate about the product, each new ship is a new toy to lovingly gaze upon and then (gently) play with and eventually try to break. For me, it's: 1) Buy the ship. Look, it's missing some masts. Log it. 2) Buy and equip masts, yards, and sails for the ship. Look, it has no rigging. Log it. 3) Sail the ship. Look, when I furl sails, it doesn't stop. Log it. Being a consummate list-maker, at least that makes me feel productive. Look how many bugs I logged today! Whee!

You can read Misha's full DevLog here.

And finally a new Interview from Rusty which includes 4 new screenshots:

What do you feel are the stand out features of PBS? Your ship-to-ship combat system seems to be shaping up quite well. Anything else going to wow us?

Russell Williams:
We believe so. As the captain of a ship, most of your time is not spent running around stabbing rats and crabs. You are giving orders to your crew, maneuvering your ship, and fighting naval battles. Swordplay is fun and we look forward to introducing that feature after launch, but right off the bat you're in for a new kind of game play that doesn't need human avatars to be fun.
Online ship-to-ship combat is great fun. We?ve got large fleets going to war, naval battles on a grand scale, and intense cat-and-mouse sailing duels. Plus regattas, missions, a dynamic economy with dozens of different commodities, and international politics. In the 18th Century Caribbean , ships were the primary expression of power. Wars were fought and lost at sea, nations rose and fell at sea, and fame and fortune both await the skillful captain at the helm of his ship.

You can read the full interview and see the screenshots here; and visit the official website here.
