FLS removed these as part of the last ship balancing exercise to promote frigate usage without consulting their community.

There you go, you can now have your say:

Should FLS bring back 1st Rates?

No! Never ever
Yes for PVE only
Yes if they made them rare
Yes if they removed dailies
Don't mind or care.

EVE in 2013 - DUST 514, CSM8, Fanfest, 10th Anniversary, Uprising, Odyssey. Gonna be a good year :)

First Rates weren't the best possible addition to that game, if only because of how the 'bigger has to be better' mentality has been drilled into MMO gamers over the past decade.

You had people taking these floating fortresses meant for port battles and using them on the open sea, only to throw a tantrum on the boards once a fleet of 4-6 smaller ships sinks their multi-million doubloon ship.

You also have plenty of gamers who are not accustomed to loss in an MMO, so after going through all the hoops to build these things they still had the unrealistic and unwarranted expectation that there was any level of permanance to them.

The game could have done well to limit First Rates - or any bundle ship, for that matter - to Port Battles only.

filmoret: One thing I have never figured out is why the game devs hardly ever fix simple problems that arise. It is like they don't care about the pvp community.

Nitth: What makes you so sure its a simple fix?

filmoret: Because most of them are. Sometimes its just changing a number in a code string other times its creating a few variables. However none of them should take over a few hours of coding.

I've not exactly been following Potbs but it's relevant that Fodderboy now appears to be it's producer who has made a comment about the removing of the top rate ships which I will reply to here while Rhaegar is still in the ban happy uncompromising mood.

Since most of the responses in favor of finding a way for them to return also seem to be in agreement that their numbers need to be controlled I’m curious how folks feel regarding the rather large numbers of them that still exist in game and how that integrates with some of the suggestions you all have made.

For example, on the Antigua server there are over 1000 Invincibles sitting in dry docks and nearly another 1300 in certified deed form. The numbers for Roberts are very similar (just slightly less). Granted those figures include ships on accounts that are currently not active (but could return) it does give you a sense of how many of these ships still exist in game. If you made a suggestion regarding how the number of these ships can be controlled, how do the existing ships fit into that scheme?

Thanks to everyone for the great discussion so far. I’m looking forward to seeing what more you all will add.

The above comment in itself is a welcome shift away from the all the 1st rate thread closures and FLS usual response that they are never coming back which blatantly ignored what many of their customers/ players want.

This past approach by FLS to only cater for a few PVP/RVR voices has lost them lots of populations, their don't care or self enforced unforgiving attitude alone has cost them a lot of players income. IMO.

These flagships are an important end game goal to many shipwrights naval officers, they are still in game to those players who have one, current losses are very low which prooves that are mainly tropy ships that most players won't risk for PVP.

In answer to how the existing ships fit into the scheme is that the current or future players of Potbs should not in any way be penalized for the mistakes of the past; those ships were always meant to be rare but FLS failed to do it, they should not blame their player base for their past mistakes.

I hope this is a sign that FLS will be willing to consider a controlled return of 1st rates so catering for a wider global player base that caters for differing play-styles.
