Diablo 3's about to have a pretty big 2017 with the Diablo: Darkening of Tristram event going live in January, the Necromancer Character Pack later in 2017, and tons of new features being added as well. We caught up with Blizzard's Wyatt Cheng and Rob Foote to discuss all the new stuff coming to D3 and the future of Diablo as a franchise.

During BlizzCon 2016, it was revealed that the Necromancer hero class would be making his triumphant return to Diablo 3 in a forthcoming Character Pack (not an expansion) in 2017. Lucky for us, the male Necro was playable at the show, and we played through the 15 minute or so demo and took some of the class' old skill made anew for a spin.
The Diablo 3 press kit contains some great news for console players in that Season play, long a staple of the PC experience, is coming to consoles. We know this through a screenshot in the press kit though this new feature has not yet been announced at Blizzcon.

The Diablo 3 site has been updated with a new developer blog that details how Greater Rifts are designed within the game. Greater Rifts are created to provide players with the maximum amount of challenge found in changing circumstances, difficult monsters and providing opportunities to overcome. In addition, balance and diverse styles of gameplay are factored in.
Blizzard has posted a new article on the Diablo 3 site to let players know that Season 8 has officially began. Instructions how to create a seasonal character are included as well as a brief look at the rewards for participation and completion of seasonal activities.
The latest design journal has been posted on the Diablo 3 site that gives a bit of background information about how rift encounters are planned to provide the right mixture of monsters to keep players engaged and to provide mechanics to let player skill and legendary abilities shine. It's not just random monsters, but carefully orchestrated combinations of avoidance, basic attackers and some type of heavy hitter to keep things interesting.
The Diablo 3 community site has been updated with a forward look at the Season 8 rewards that is scheduled to begin soon. Amonth other things, players will get the next piece of the Conqueror's Set, a new portrait frame, a new set of wings inspired by Diablo 2's Andariel that even yells "DIE, MAGGOT!" when equipped.
Diablo III players who love seasonal play will be happy to hear that Season 7 has officially begun. During the journey, players will need to create a specially created or converted character (stripped of everything and reduced to level 1) under the 'Season" tag. Starting at level 1, players will work through objectives all the way through the level cap that will see them earn a complete gear set, a seasonal pet, and a new portrait frame.
