Well that funny cause that doesnt prevent hacking and piracy...
o rly?

Yes. Really. It could be argued that piracy is more prevalent in many games because once a game is cracked, in some cases it actually performs better than the official game. It is a shame that in order to get a decent product, some people feel the need to pirate games. And it isn't like it is hard to do; let's be serious.

Oh, so there's going to be a lot of people pirating and hacking D3?  Like for example, if D3 was played by 4 million poeple how many of those copies would be hacked and playing on battle.net?

Let's put it this way:  Nothing fires up a hacker more than the word "unhackable."  Blizzard has high defenses, but with the amount of venom, fame, and notoriety that will come from hacking, it will definitely be hacked.  I imagine hackers are just waiting for the RMT auctions and the seurity joke of Paypal too.  Just think... you can have your real life bank account robbed by a D3 hacker :)

Oh man, so of the say... 4 million people that will play D3, how many people do you think will have their bank account hacked?   So it would be easier for a hacker to steal a bank account through D3 than other methods?  Such as people who use brokerage accounts on public wi-fi's?  Or people who buy porn from fly by night web sites?

Well I think it is a bit over stated but

Well known technical problems + Highly touted security = The Target

I dont konw much about hacker circles but common sense tells me D3 is likely the biggest target since PS3.

But only time will tell.

Agree.

Doing a Masters of Information Security course, one of the first things you learn is no security system is unbreakable. End of story. The Insider threat is the hardest to deal with.

D3 will get hacked.

Maybe but the quality of the hack matters also. Most games people refer to as hacked don't function  half right and the few that do leave out huge chunks of content. The days of just bypassing the basic CD protection are long gone.

the only thing the hack will change is the online requirement, though a decent hacker would probably make it lan friendly too.  either way,  it might be considered a 'fix' in more than a 'few' circles.

You can't just remove the online requirement though. Half of the game is on the server. The item character and save databases aren't part of the client. The dungeon generators aren't part of the client. You have to provide the missing half or the game won't play offline at all.

Sure, I am the first to complain because Blizzard messed up,Blizzard must work night and day to fix all issues and have the servers run in mint condition.

But complaining about how fail it is that the game is online only while you knew this beforehand makes little sense to me, but whatever :p

/sarcasm off

Future of online gaming? If so, then we will see gaming die very soon. Sad :(

Agreed. I don't doubt there will be some private server that emulate Diablo 3. Like most emulations, it will not be on par with the real deal. If someone finds that tolerable, more power to them. Unless they pirate it of course, I can't condone that.

Now in a reaction to Strap, I'm nearly done with my studies, focussing on Information Security too. That said, no one here is doubting that the security of Diablo 3 is perfect. However, concerning the RMAH, Blizzard has the obligation (if they want to succeed with the RMAH though) to make their environment as secure as possible. They're of the opinion (same with me on this) that using the MMO model is the best way to achieve this.

This is done by placing the crucial data on their servers, while the rest is on our client. It's highly unlikely that some hacker is getting unlimited access to their servers by the use of a SQL-injection or something similar to that. I haven't heard nor read anything concerning databases of WoW being comprimised. So why would this suddenly happen to Diablo 3? The way Diablo 3 is setup, is more secure for us players, with the nasty side effect that you can't play offline or over the LAN. For some this is a no-deal situation, I can't care less, if it prevents the duping, maphacking and other crap that went on in Diablo 2.

I agree though that the biggest security threat comes from the inside. Not much you can do about that though. I'm sure that as someone who is doing a Master course in Information Security you don't need me to tell you about the fact that you can limit the possibility of the inside threat and some ways of dealing with this, but that you can never factor it out.

In conclusion, yes, no security is unbreakable. Yes, Diablo 3 will be cracked and there will be emulations, on private servers (I'm looking forward to see people bitching on the uptime of those). We will probably see some exploits too. I can say this though, the possibility of Blizzard's servers being compromised are pretty small. People's accounts will be hacked though, most people are bloody ignorant about information security. Nothing to do about that, but you already know this, it's probably the second thing you learned in your Master course of Information Security. It was in mine

Why exactly would they be waiting? Last time I checked PayPal is already there and many games use it.

So why would any hacker wait for RMAH to go live to hack Your Pay Pal account if he can do it today?

Think much? Don't think so.

Also no one is claiming online only will make it 100% secure from cheating but obviously another requirement to bypass will lessen it a lot, which is success already. And even if we forget the cheating part, I support online only even if it's just to fight piracy (stealing).

But Diablo 3 isn't really a single player game. It is pretty much a online game that allows you to solo if you wish. Blizzard has said before that D3 would focus on multiplayer.

The title of the thread makes it seem like lag in multi-player is OK. Lag is never OK.

Depends! Some around here say that is part of the challenge of hardcore! Working as intended...wheeeeee!

>_>

Honestly though I haven't experienced much myself.

1. For god's sake mmo gamers, enough with the analogies. They're unnecessary and your comparisons are terrible, dissimilar, and illogical.

2. To posters feeling the need to state how f2p really isn't f2p: Players understand the concept. You aren't privy to some secret the rest are missing. You're embarrassing yourself.

3. Yes, Cpt. Obvious, we're not industry experts. Now run along and let the big people use the forums for their purpose.

Agreed. Then there's the little fact that you can never make sure that there's no lag. Lag is nothing more then a delay in the communication between devices. For Diablo 3, it can come from Blizzard's servers, but the problem can also be on your end. If you're on dail-up for example and are also busy downloading a movie through the use of torrents, then the lag probably comes from your side.

That aside, the title is another shout out for "offline singleplayer", which will never happen. These people will complain, then complain some more, while still playing the game.

I didn't take the tiem to read through all the posts but I wanted to add (although I'm sure it's been mentioned already) you can stop people form "quick joining" your game by  checking the box in the options. That solves that problem.

For the most part, I think the performance of the game has been fine and I'm sure it will be improved. However, I feel like a lot of people are just complaining about stuff for the sake of complaining. I mean, there have been other threads which were just hinly disguesed posts that were actually just promotiing PoE or Torchlight 2.

But for legint gripes, at some point mo matter what game you play, you have to choose to either accept the game for what it is or move on to something else. When you removed your pre-conceived notions about what this game should be... you might be able to enjoy the game more. I think it's a phenomally fun game to play.
