  • World Championship Finals Wrap Report

Well, this is what it all boils down to, the best team from North America, Enemy; and the best team from the European Union, Epsilon. I have to be honest, I think the best team in North America is Cloud 9, and I think the REAL final was yesterday, when Epsilon squeaked out a three games to two victory over Cloud 9, but the games have to be played, so let’s see how it turned out.

  • World Championship- Day Three Recap

Two very interesting match-ups in today’s Semi-finals, both pitting a North American team against an European Union team.

  • World Championship - Day Two Recap and Results

The final match of the day will pit two EU teams against each other, Epsilon, who went 27-1 during the SPL Fall Split, and Fnatic, who are the longest tenured team in the Smite Pro Leagues. These two teams are long-time scrim partners, and know each other exceedingly well. Having said that, I am sure they both have saved some pocket strats for just such an occasion as this, and we will see those tricks of the trade shortly.

  • World Championship - Day One Recap and Results

Today was Day One here in Atlanta for the Smite World Championship, otherwise known as the Placement round. Two teams were eliminated today, leaving eight teams to move on. Cloud 9 (NA) and Paradigm (EU) have byes in the first round, so there are eight games to be played, and teams need to lose two to be eliminated.

  • SMITE World Championships Preview

Hey there Smite fans! Once again, Hi-Rez has graciously invited MMORPG to cover their Smite World Championship, held at the Cobb Energy Center, in Atlanta, Georgia, from January 7th -10th. If last year’s SWC is anything to judge by, Smite fans will be in for quite an event.

  • The Best of 2015

If this year of MMO releases can be categorized by any one thing, it might be that the existing MMOs in the landscape had great years, while we wait for the next big thing to come along. Meanwhile, the single player RPG had an absolutely stellar time, with some truly amazing games and expansions released throughout the calendar year. We’ve polled our staff, and these are the games we loved the most in 2015, and the ones we’re looking forward to the most in 2016.

  • The New Age of Esports Game Development

Game Design is a funny thing. There are many ways to create and build all types of games. Over the past twenty years we have seen the tremendous rise of video games into our popular culture, and now they are here to stay. However, in this latest batch of games coming forth in 2015-2016 there is a new element to design as studios try to capitalize on a growing market: eSports.

  • Power Rankings: MOBAs

It all began with a mod. While some observers trace the history of the mobile online battle arena category back as far as the 1989 Sega console game Herzog Zwei, it's more common to cite Aeon of Strife. A fan-made StarCraft custom map released nine years later, it was four on four, but with a player squad vs. an AI one and without leveling up. It was also the inspiration for the 2003 Warcraft III mod, Defense of the Ancients, which featured two human teams and in-match hero advancement.

  • World Championship Wrap Report

Recently I had the opportunity to cover the Smite World Championship, held at the Cobb Energy Center in Atlanta, Georgia. Hi-Rez invited the top two teams from four regions; North America, European Union, China and Latin and South America, to battle it out for the title of 2015 Smite World Champions.

  • Hands-On with the XBOX One Version

At the 2015 Smite World Championships, held from January 9th-12th of this month, I was able to get thirty or forty minutes on the playable beta version of Smite for the X-Box One. For those who do not know, Smite is Hi-Rez Studios recent entry into the MOBA genre, released in March, 2014. Smite is no standard entry into the genre dominated by Defense of the Ancients 2 and League of Legends, the devs over at Hi-Rez have made several very significant innovations.
