But, but... NWO doesn't have character customization!

My opinion is my own. I respect all other opinions and views equally, but keep in mind that my opinion will always be the best for me. That's why it's my opinion.

The lack of creativity with the races is terrible.

I dont know why all modern MMO's have to go with every race being Human or "Humans with horns or faicepaint".

Seriously I know that this is a crypticc game but honestly they could have at least added something more interesting in there besides fucking teflings.

Maybe because making spiders a playable race would require completely separate armor and weapons design?

simple reason for that.

they are basically all based on ADnD, or rather folklore if you wanna go back some more.

I don't think it's too bad in NW. I understand where Alber is coming from, though. Take SW for instance... Every race in that game is a human with different skin color and facial features

There are technical reasons for every race being humans, with different skin colors or bumps on their forehead.   Mostly it boils down to being way easier for the designers.   They may have also done some studies on actual player choice on such things, where the humany ones win out.   But really, it's just way easier on the designers.

If you are holding out for the perfect game, the only game you play will be the waiting one.

Yeah, I assumed it was a design issue. Still, though, if lore permits, I like a variety of shapes and sizes. Making the races bland because its easier is lazy in my opinion.

Not matte rof lazyness but costs. IT was easier back in the days where you only had to deal with 2D or low polygon count 3d models where armors were pretty much just textures slapped over the mesh.

These days however we have more and more actual modeled armor in games and what it means for every non-humanoid race You'd not only have to redo the texture completely but also all the armor meshes.

Assuming you need both male and female varations, 3 armor classes (light, medium, heavy) and at last 10 different models that's 60 armors (each requiring it's own texture and mesh). As long as you have humanoid races all you really need is slight adjustments and rescaling (like for dwarves or halflings) , adding a non-humanoid race however means you need to remodel and retxture 60 armors again which increases workload and manhours. Whenever you just hire more graphic desingers or delay the product it costs tons of money.

People seem to not realize how expensive this stuff is, just look at recent Skull Girls campaign where they needed 250k $ just to add single new character to a 2d fighting game.

To be fair, those are the default playable races in DnD. Sure there are rules for playable minotaurs, but that's not standard, and for the starting kit of a new game 7 races is a good number. It's only really missing half-orc.

My main beef with the character ceation is, the place of origin has absolutely no imact on story or gameplay.
