Pretty good candid stuff from Jeremy Gaffney about the industry in general, I enjoyed this one a lot.
I also liked what I've heard about WildStar, one of the few games I'm watching really closely this year.
From what I've gathered from this it'll have more of an open world than most new MMOs, and it'll have quite some variety in gameplay thanks to the paths. (Especialy loved the bit about settlers setting up their campfires.)
Also... PVP and PVE servers? That's good, I think. Means some open world PVP as well.
Sat Feb 09 2013 5:27PM Reportlooking forward to WildStar. i hope they deliver a good game. Im really liking the art style in WS.
nice show this week, by the way.
Sun Feb 10 2013 12:18AM ReportGaffney was amazing. He very much made me a fan of the game. Rob was enteraining as well. Murphy? I don'twant to be mean but he was as usual rather awkward. Although the show was much better than the normal MMOFTW. The interview while really good could have been a lot better if Murphy had just remained silent and let the other two talk.
Amazing job by Gafney. So candid, full of information and excited.
Sun Feb 10 2013 2:18AM ReportAlthough gw2s customization is still better.
Sun Feb 10 2013 7:04AM ReportGreat show. Lots of good candid talk, even advice for other developers out there. Been following WildStar since the beginning, and Im glad he recognized the one major flaw Ive been concerned about myself. When talking of the LFG tool, he mentioned that its not just about class and build in WildStar but also about paths.
My one major concern for the title is the restrictions that places on groups. When forming up, instead of just looking for a tank, youll need a tank/settler, or a healer/explorer. He says they recognize that, and arent planning on making content to require a certain path, but whether the dungeon needs an explorer is irrelevant, if it has even one hidden room with a chest in it, groups wont run that dungeon without an explorer.
As limiting as it would be for them to assign paths to classes themselves, it would solve that issue. If all ranged DPS were explorers, and all tanks were soldiers for example, then when building a group, you at least know you fill both roles. In the end it actually gives MORE flexibility to groups than if you pick your own path. I would hate to be told I cant join a group because they need a certain path, or even worse, running a group with 2 tanks, or an extra healer because you cant find DPS with the path you need.
Sun Feb 10 2013 1:24PM ReportI really enjoyed this MMOFTW episode. Hearing Jeremy talking nerdy about game mechanics was wonderful. He seems to know a lot about what this genre needs to more forward and has the experience to back it up.
Signing up for Wildstar beta RIGHT NOW
Sun Feb 10 2013 4:25PM ReportNice one.
Now its maybe year or two (or more) that i said the first MMO that recognizes soloers as valid playstyle for whole game and not just leveling or some stupidity like solo=easy/group=hard will have better longievity than your standard fare.
Many people may hate on it, but lets face it, majority of people playing MMOs are soloers, it doesnt mean they are 100% soloers but it does mean that content needs to roll and not just in form of few quests you make repeatable and you can repeat those until the expansion.
Mon Feb 11 2013 11:09AM ReportVery interesting to hear Gaffney’s comments about the increasing MMO competition to put out more content on a monthly to three monthly basis.
Also his point that you go subscription at start to ensure the games financial success. That shows you what the industry thinks about F2P.
Just one thing, no need to tell us that something is cool or awesome, we can work that out for ourselves.
This was a good one, I think it depends on who they get as a guest, some are just too interested in talking about their own game. Wildstar was always on my watch list, after hearing Gaffney’s gaming ethos much more so.
Tue Feb 12 2013 4:09AM Report@achesome
ah but he said he recognize that you cant expect any MMO to keep players intrest for longer than 1 - 3 months, depending on playstyle, so sounds like that is their aim, keep the most active intrested for about 2 - 4 weeks....then hope they liked it enough to return when an expansion comes along. sounds much like GW2 in that regards.
