  • Can MMOs Really Do Monthly Updates?

It's a simple fact that content creators can't produce content at a rate comparable to how quickly people consume it. This isn't just the case with video games: a two-hour movie took a lot longer than two hours to make, a book that takes you a week to read took a lot longer than a week to write, and so on.

  • What Went Wrong?

WildStar had all the hallmarks of a promising launch: promising reviews and widespread critical acclaim, queues of players waiting to log in, and a burgeoning community that was excited by Carbine’s new IP. It’s difficult to imagine a better environment in which to fire up a brand new MMO.

  • 5 Things Carbine Should Add

Since WildStar’s launch in early June, Carbine Studios has been focusing heavily on quality of life updates and bug fixes. As a result, Drop 3 looks like the biggest update yet, with a number of changes in the works. But what happens when it’s time to start on shiny new stuff? Columnist Gareth Harmer details what he’d like to see arrive on Nexus.

  • The Nexus Saga Begins

WildStar’s story is changing. Everything that we’ve played up till now has been a prologue to the Nexus Saga, a multi-chapter epic adventure involving iconic heroes. Chapter 1 begins with Journey to Omnicore 1, and Creative Director Chad Moore was on hand to tell columnist Gareth Harmer all about it.

  • Omnicore 1 Brings Combat, Puzzles & Lore (Oh My!)

The team at Carbine is hard at work bringing some new content to WildStar. We got a sneak peak at some of the projects there and what fans can expect to see in the upcoming releases. With the lore of Nexus finally coming out from behind the curtain, Carbine has some plans for solo content as well as a new high level zone which players can check out. Stephan Frost, who gave us the demo, stressed the boost in solo content which looked and played almost like an RPG.

  • A Game of Character, A Game of Characters

There are a lot of great things that can be said about WildStar. Carbine Studios’ flagship MMORPG is funny, polished, unique, and fun to play. There’s a staggering amount of content available to play for both factions, and a cohesive story that mostly pulls it all together. It’s extremely easy on the eyes, and offers some interesting developments in its handling of gameplay systems and combat.

  • Review in Progress #3

Next week, we’ll finally slap a score on our WildStar review. I can already taste the disgruntled sentiment of some readers, the tears of joy from others, and the /shrugs of even more. I’m actually running out of things to talk about here, as between myself and our weekly WildStar columnist Gareth Harmer, I feel like we’ve gone over and over pretty much every aspect of the game.

  • Review In Progress - Part One

It used to be, just a few years back, that if two high profile MMOs released in the same year, chances are they would mirror each other in tone and mechanics. Nothing could be further from the truth when it comes to ESO and WildStar. And for this I am thankful, because so far WildStar is a refreshingly upbeat and robust theme park MMO. Read on for the first part of our Review in Progress.

  • Gauging the Critical Reception

Earlier this week, I and some other team members here at MMORPG were trying to guess just where the game would land in terms of critical acclaim. We were pretty evenly divided into two camps. One side believes that WildStar will sit in the 80s, and the other side of the argument thinks that Carbine’s freshman game will fall somewhere in the mid-70s due to backlash that other recent MMO releases have been receiving.

  • Too Much Hand-Holding?

WildStar doesn’t hold your hand… it drags you by every body part in a million different directions and can leave you feeling absolutely torn on what it is you should be doing. My question for Carbine and you all is: does WildStar point the player in too many divergent directions or is more always better in an MMO trying to please so many playstyles?

  • Upcoming Content Revealed

During Gamescom, Carbine’s Nick Roth took columnist Gareth Harmer on a tour through some of WildStar’s upcoming content. The upcoming Defile patch was a major feature, bringing a close to the story prologue and clearing the slate for an upcoming World Story. But that wasn’t all – a massive new arena, new Protostar-themed 5-player dungeon and new holiday event were also shown.

  • The Strain Has Infected Me

One of the best parts of the MMO-side of our E3 was getting a sneak preview of WildStar’s upcoming first content patch: The Strain. Led on a walkthrough by Carbine’s own Jeremy Gaffney, we toured the all new zone of Blighthaven, the new five man public dungeon of The Nursery, and got a look at some of the all snazzy looking new Strain-infected gear you’ll be able to nab. • More About Warplots

At PAX East this past weekend, Carbine Studios unveiled more information about the much-anticipated PVP feature known as Warplots. Lead PVP Designer Jen Gordy took us through an overview of how the system would work and showed us some of the customization options available for the plots. She called it a teamcentric system, 40 on 40 PVP featuring fortresses that are prepared for battle whilst aloft and then plopped down hard onto the ground to duke it out with an opposing Warplot.

  • Raids - Big is a Theme

Raiding in WildStar is all-out, taking the game’s splashy look and large scale into consideration all the way. Big is a theme for the game, and those who love to raid and constantly improving their gear will find much to dive into when the game launches. We were treated to a presentation about the game’s raids, which will fall into both the 20-man and 40-man varieties.

  • Warplots - You Got Your Raids in My PvP

Warplots are WildStar’s late-game PvP centerpiece. They are highly customizable 40 vs. 40 battles taking place in massive settings. Each faction gets its own side to deck out with a system similar to the way housing works in the game. Build, set into place, add some guards, lay some traps, throw in a raid boss, and a superweapon, and let the other side in for the goal of mass amounts of enemy slaughter. It won’t be easy since the other side also has it out for you too.

  • PvP - Gear, ELO, & The Thrill of Competition

WildStar’s PvP is just like the rest of the game - it’s fast, it’s furious, and it’s on a grand scale. For those looking forward to the action combat, the use of constant movement, and the telegraph system to add strategy, there are many ways to satisfy your urge to take down some dirty Dominion or Exile scum, depending upon your own loyalties.

  • Legend of Kel Voreth

Nestled in the bottom corner of Auroria lies the Ruins of Kel Voreth, one of WildStar’s earliest dungeons. Besides being a place for the slaughter, this Osun stronghold contains a hefty amount of hidden lore. As part of his ongoing adventure through Nexus, Gareth Harmer reveals more about this barbaric race and their ties to the mysterious Eldan.

At the end of the valley we discover a pier like wooden structure which clearly extends deep into a cave. A swirling blue mist covers the cave entrance and if you continue, you are given the standard Dungeon Difficulty options: Normal, Veteran and Rally the Instance Level popup. You have discovered a Dungeon entrance and need to decide how you will enter.

  • Beyond the Walls of the Thayd

Winter Beta Patch Three has come to WildStar and with it, many significant changes to the game for Beta players. The ability to level to 50 now has to be at the top of the list for most. Let’s take our first look beyond the City of Thayd and see what is in store for us as we continue our adventures on Nexus.

  • Deeper into the Dominion Lands

Carbine has lifted the level limit to level 29, allowing us to explore deeper into Nexus and report back on what we find. Over the coming days and weeks, I’ll be entering the Ruins of Kel Voreth dungeon and creeping around the contested zone of Whitevale. Today though, I’m starting out in Auroria: the first post-15 zone.

Just after New Year’s Day Paul Tassi wrote an editorial piece for Forbes.com titled Predicting the Biggest Video Game Disaster of 2014: The Elder Scrolls Online. As I read this piece it became clear that Tassi’s prediction was based on the choice Zenimax, developer and publisher of the game has made on how to monetize the game – a fixed price monthly subscription.

General Article

  • Review in Progress #2

At over 40 hours played, I’m sitting at level 25 (almost 26). I’ve completed the game’s first Adventure, first Dungeon, and partaken in a few rounds of Walatiki Temple PVP. I’m crafting a ton of weapons for Rob and myself via the Weaponsmith trade, rounding out my Tanking and DPS builds, and I’m getting warier and warier about entering the first contested PVP zone around level 30. But the main takeaway? I’m having fun.

To the MMO player, a PC is much more than a glorified games console or business workhorse. It’s a window onto scores of virtual worlds, a device that transforms us from mundane mortals into legendary heroes, and a communications interface that bring friends that are continents away into the room beside us.

I’m not a partisan MMO gamer. I’ll play a sandbox, a themepark, an Action MMORPG, or anything that offers me fun when I boot up the title. But if there’s something made clear by recent MMO offerings, it’s this: traditional questing as a means of progression is really getting tired.

  • The MMO Isn't Over - It's Evolving

Recently, I read a piece proclaiming the MMO "era" to be over. While the genre has undergone some shifts through the years as both technology and gamers change, the genre isn’t on life support. While certain trends have held and others faded, MMOS are still being made, played, and planned. The genre is evolving, just as it evolved after 2004, and continues today. We seem to be on the verge of a new chapter right now, in fact.

The most anticipated new MMORPG of 2014 is, without a doubt, Carbine Studios’ WildStar. The Elder Scrolls Online has had its time in the spotlight, bugs and all included, so now it’s time for that focus to shift to the new IP on the block. However, before the complete launch that will undoubtedly be full of server stability problems, balance issues, and complaints from the typical “I hate this game, yet I play it” players, let us bask in the glow of pre-launch hype just a bit longer.

  • Rethinking the Pillars of MMO Design

RPG designers often refer to the four pillars when discussing a new game or concept. Their goals often aim to improve or reinvent one or more aspect(s). SWTOR emphasized the story pillar, while Wildstar showed interest in combat. There are MMOs that aim to invent new pillars like Everquest Next, while others focus on improving a variable within a pillar. Could these pillars of game design be stifling innovation or do they merely keep the design process grounded in what works?

Subscriptions. From where we are right now, the topic is worth revisiting. The Elder Scrolls Online is set for release in just a couple of weeks, while WildStar will be debuting in early June. Some feel that the subscription model is outmoded, with a contingent of players that agree that a free to play game attracts them more. Despite some games launching with subscriptions and then converting to a hybrid model, a couple of studios are trying again.
