Trion Worlds and the Defiance development team have released a new video diary where the team discusses what it is that makes Defiance such a new force in the MMO genre. Among other things, they talk about persistence, dynamic content, the game's seamless open world, vehicular gameplay, and the versatile weapon customization system.

Three things that do NOT make this game amazing, and should worry some people:
#1: Instances, these ALWYAS detract and horribly cripple "Open Worlds". You cannot have a decent "Open World" experience AND have instancing. It's a tug of war that takes away from the overall experience.
#2: An MMO that is based on a TV series, as the TV series makes its run. TV series are very VERY fickle beasts of burden. They can run for 6months or 6years. MMOs are designed to, at the very minimum, run for 10years. Having an MMO tied so directly into a TV show just makes it feel like Wizard101 or FreeRealms. It's a campy one-trick pony that once it makes its debut it just seems weird. Eventually, the show will tank (as they all do), but unlike most other shows it will ALSO bring down its MMO counterpart as "Morale" in an MMO is very fragile.
#3: "MultiPlatform" is ALWAYS a bad thing. MultiPlatform based games are always designed for consoles in mind (due to their horrible mediocre power), and then ported over to the PC as it is easier to port to something more powerful and flexible than say, consoles. Additionally, you have to worry about console players complaining in competitive matches because they keep gettinf face-rolled by PC players. It has been proven before that Console gamers simply cannot compete with PC games, and I don't see this going over very well.
I won't be swept away until I get my hands on Alpha or Beta, and then I can judge for myself whether or not Defiance will be worth a damn.
Their investors should stock up on stress medication as until 6months after launch we won't know how well this product will do. However, it isn't looking good. Albeit all the "flashyness" of their design is inspiring, but their business decisions are horrible at best.

Other than the hyping of features that are regularly expected in every modern mmorpg this game does look fun and I will be trying it out on release.
