Is this game just another  pve shooter game, or is there  player conflict on a large and continuing basis?  a la DAOC...Elder Scrolls Online etc

There is pvp in the game if that is what you are asking and its done in a good way too where it is open without being too open

There is no faction(s) per say in Defiance. Atleast none that the player gets to pick / play.

From everything that has been said its The Shadow Wars and PvP Matchs. Both optional pvp that the player picks if he wants to join or not.

There are videos on the pvp i reccomend watching them just look up defiance pvp on youtube

The "factions" are essentially Red vs Blue and you get assigned to either when you join Shadow War (openw orld PvP system). It happens in same isntance same world as PvE but you can only shoot players that are participating in shaadow war on the opposing team, and it's generally objective based matches (with fairly long time limit)
