ToR 'had' an absolutely brilliant crafting system during beta that was unfortunately gutted about a month before launch. I am guessing because the CEO's 4 year old couldn't figure out that barrels and triggers go on guns and not on a pair of pants. There was also a lot more customization available in the number of modable equipment items as well as in character creation. I was in beta since phase one closed and watched as more and more of the 'unique' and interesting elements were removed. By the last huge set of changes right before launch I knew that ToR was no longer the game I had waited years to play and cancelled my pre-order. It is a bad game now? No, I cannot say that. Millions of people are playing it happily and for them it is an amazing game. I was just sorry to see so much of its potential hit the cutting room floor.

Always remember that you're unique. Just like everyone else.

All the TOR fanboys can stick to the TOR forum yeah SWG is dead now but it still had some of the best features in the whole genre.

You forgot player housing - that's #1 IMO.

But sadly, every system you mention was from the ORIGINAL game. By the end though, anyone could craft capped gear, everyone could be a Jedi and there were no more skills. SOE destroyed the game.

I've been learning what I can via forums, talking with a player, and videos.

Prospecting, harvesters, and factories aren't there.

What I don't get is, why they wouldn't bring over what is often lauded as the best crafting system ever (even with its flaws like no deterioration)?

Space combat is a rail shooter where all spacecraft appear to fly the same.  I really liked SWG space combat, except where it did not affect life on planets or the rest of the game (never could bomb an opposing side, or stop the deployment of walkers, or insert idea here). I think the videos of space combat just sealed my wallet against the game.

  • You can't really turn (rail)
  • You have infinite missles seemingly
  • No 3D radar to indicate things behind you.
  • No free form flight, random encounters in space, etc.
  • Constant barrel rolling
  • Personally I could care less about this part of the game. For me the land game was much more important. They could have left space completely out and I wouldn't have cared. I'm glad that space comabt is an option only for this game.
My lesser complaints are:
  • No droids apparently
  • There are plenty of droids. You meet tons of them in game including one that is your ship companion.
  • An era I don't care for (prefer Episode 4)
  • Personally I think the OT has been done to death. Setting it in the era before all the movies leaves much more freedom in the story telling aspect.
  • No player cities (right?)
  • Thank god for that. Now when I travel across Tattooine I don't have to worry about urban blight screwing with the nice landscape.

Comments?  Do I have it wrong?

Mostly, but then I doubt it really matters. TOR is not for you. TOR is for the whole rest of us that thought SWG was a boring and broken down game. You guys had your game and now we finally got ours.

Good for you. You have your game. Most SWG have no idea where to turn because the industry is saturated with TOR like games.....

I've played EVE, SWG, World of Warcraft, and Warhammer and not one of them is anything like TOR.

MMOs played:SWG,NGE,Warhammer, World of Warcraft, Star Trek Online,Eve, Star Wars the Old Republic.
Favorite MMO: Star Wars the Old Republic
Least Favorite MMO: NGE

Ah, well. TOR looks like the typical advance your character by completeing quest upon quest to me. Obviously I have not played it, nor do I care to. But i'm curious, what makes TOR different for you than EVE, SWG, WOW and Warhammer?

Edit: EVE is obvious. I'm curious about the other 3.

Watching the biodrones try to defend TOR is cute.

Serious comparing SWG to SWTOR is like comparing Shogun:Total War to Starcraft.

Bit similar but overall just diffrent TYPE of games.

One is more varied second is more streamlined.

Sandbox vs themepark.

Just very diffrent.

Despite everything said both for and against ToR, as an avid SWG fan i can say that through all the disappointments brought about as a result of ToR being in no way, shape, or form like galaxies i must admit i'm still on the fence about trying ToR just because i miss SWG and that universe, even if i too prefer the original trilogy by leaps and bounds. In galaxies i started off as a smuggler and then became a commando. would i enjoy either of those classes in ToR? are they carbon copies of other MMO classes the way the sith lord is to a warrior from WoW? (i say that cause i saw that picture comparing their skills side by side and they were neigh identical)

This is a vaild point.

The problem is that those of us that Played SW:G for extended periods of time, and have tried out ToR are going to be slightly biased on our view because of our prior experiences with a Star Wars themed MMO.

Take me...

I started SW:G full time in 2004 after testing it out for a few months in 2003.  I was at the Sarlaac on Starsider when the servers went down for the last time last month.

I tried ToR during the Open Beta Weekends and Clossed Beta.  Its got great VO work....but its not for me.  It doesn't have what I want from a Star Wars MMO......the oppurtunity to run my own game inside of the Universe..
