It's not that simple with mmorpgs and their persistent worlds. Why put time and effort into a character today if it's not going to be around tomorrow? That is his concern.

Because theres no proof to even think about that your character wont be around tomorrow.

SOE doesnt look like it plans to shut SWG down in the next 2-3 years, i wouldnt be surprised if they announce expansion for the next year actually. Theyre adding a lot of stuff into SWG, to be honest, the next year might be the best of SWG, as it gets into better shape. Wait for the info from Fan Faire!

Even if the much discussed Bioware MMO is KOTOR, not every one that is a Star Wars fan is a KOTOR fan or vice versa.

As I recall, speculation for the Bioware MMO that is the topic of much debate is currently suggested to have a potential release of 2011.  So even if that date is correct, that is at least 2 years of no Star Wars MMO competition on the market.

Personally, I am not a KOTOR era fan of the Star Wars genre, and as such will probably stay with SW:G until they shut the servers off for the last time.

If the Bioware MMO is Star Wars, I would probably look into it for certain.  But will I like it? Will it be a "sandbox" like Pre-NGE or Pre-CU or Pre-Patch 9 SW:G?  No one knows.

What do we know for a fact about the Bioware MMO that is suggested to be KOTOR?  I seem to recall that they said that it would Have MMO features.  Beyond that, I am not sure.

I do know that I am not thrilled with EA's track record, nor do I recall hearing great things about the KOTOR 2 release and game.

Ultimately?  Time will tell.

For right now?  SW:G is the only game in town for a MMO that will let you experience anything like Living in the Star Wars Universe.

And I feel that ALL the Players of SW:G; whether happy or not, will agree that it is the only game like it out there.

I cant wait for their version of housing system, crafting, space simulation, player cities...

I don't want a remake of SWG.  I want a decent PRE-CU combat system and features that work.

The problem SWG had over it's history is that there was too much put in that was simply not finished.  Having features that are constantly broken isn't enough.

Blizzard released WOW with far fewer features,  but the features that were in at launch woked and people enjoyed the game.  Over time they slowly patched in new content and features.

In contrast SOE attempted to launch too much at launch and ended up patching bug fixes instead of content.

Thats why i dont like WoW, its too simple and boring, not enough stuff to do.

do you think they will pull a nge? hell no.

edit: i hold no hope that bioware is making a sandbox game but i respect their ability to make a successful game. things need to evolve here...this game needs to fade away to heal the damage done to the i.p. and the fans.  this next game wont be a sandbox for the same reason jedi lust killed the last one.

SWG pre cu/nge wanted!

I bet Bioware will do like most developers these days:

1. Buy great IP

2. Make theme park mmo with raids and battlegrounds and one or two new features to say they are different than anybody else.

3. Grab the profit.

Player cities, shifting ressources, social encentives in the game, freedom of choice, skills will not be included.

Hell there probably won't be space f(l)ight at launch.

This thread needs more sense of realism. The 'Bioware KOTOR mmo' is just another rumour.

Also, since when can you talk about 'the near future' if a game hasnt officially been announced yet? Just look at every single MMO how long it took before they released it AFTER they officially announced it.

If you are going to wait for this game (no one really has a clue what, how or even when itll be), you might as well skip it right away and keep waiting for the next better game and so on.

SWG will be SWG in the near future, you only have to follow the rescent update threads for that without even playing the game

It hasn't been confirmed but it is very likely is will be BioWare's MMO.

And you use the word replace as if it would be similar gameplay. Truth is, we don't know anything about this game feature-wise, we don't even know if it's comming out for a year two years etc.

SWG will not be replaced, but it will have competition if a new Star Wars MMO comes out.

Whether the game is about to be replaced or not (IMO, I'm not yet sold on this current "news"), if you're paying monthly and you're having fun, does it matter?

Well to most of the MMO gamers I talk to, yeah it matters a lot.  If you'd look at how most if not all MMOs are designed, you're always working towards something.  You're gaining xp, trying to get new skills, new levels, badges, ranks, trying to get into the next zone, achieve the next level of city development etc, etc..

Your response doesn't surprise me though.  SOE and its defenders have never seemed to grasp that players greatly value their ingame progress.  That's another reason why they continue to fail.

Also, SOE has set a horrible precedent in terms of how they handle upcoming significant game changes.  If people felt that they were going to get ample warning of a shut down, and a time to reflect on their ingame experiences, probably more would play even with the KOTOR news.  As it is, however, people like me expect SOE to advertise great new things for the game, get as much money as they can, and then suddenly pull the plug.

In light of past behavior, I simply don't believe Smed's recent suggestions regarding the game's bright future, and he won't be getting any more of my money.

I remember a "rumour" about something called a starter kit too...

The difference is that the Starter Kit rumor wasn't confirmed by the head of SOE or LEC.  On the other hand, the BioWare's MMO is based on Star Wars rumor was in fact confirmed by the CEO of EA, who owns Bioware, and was the primary force behind EA buying BioWare, with their MMO being a primary reason behind it.  It was in a reputable investment magazine no less.

I'm not sure why some folks are unconvinced.  Unless EA's CEO is indicted for stock manipulation, which would be the case if he lied about BioWare's MMO, or someone from EA, BioWare, or LEC come out and claim the journalist from Conde Nast Portfolio magazine lied, I think we pretty well know the IP and timeline of the IP of BioWare's MMO.

Not only do I agree with ArcAngel3, I also agree with someforumguy.  SWG will be the same PoS it currently is, even with BioWare making a new Star Wars based MMO.  Without another full core game revamp, SWG will continue to be the worst MMO currently, and previously, available on the market.  It is a horrible, unfun game, and if that doesn't keep you from playing, why would the possible imminent shutdown of the horrible mess that is SWG scare you away?
