Exactly, but 'SOE' is easier to spell than 'Lucasarts' so people pick on the former.

People hated the NGE, but those people who were cool enough to stay have created the best community in MMO history

IMHO --- it is not really about who pushed for the NGE... it was the implementation.

SOE told players that some classes like ranger and squad leader would be looked at soon in the CU. The also released an expansion right before these massive changes --- people had already pre-ordered.

They took peoples classes and totally deleted them -- after making hollow promises they knew were false...

they knew they were not going to "fix" ranger --- unless you meant in the mafia sense of "fix" and encouraged people who were about to get screwed over to pre-order Mustafar.

Now I currently play SWG--- but by no means do I trust SOE. They could promise HOTH today, and it would not surpirse me in the least to see them shut down the game the day after the last billing cycle and attempt to gleam more money from micro-transactions...

I think that is the source of the hatred. The NGE was just bad. It was the implementation and false promises that earned them the hatred.

The community was great before NGE. Im sure many people would use more appropriate words for the people who stayed ....cool wouldn't be one of them :p.

That has been proven false by numerous sources, including Brenlo, communications director of SOE, Jeff Freeman, former Lead gameplay designer and co-creator of the NGE, and Dan Rubenfeld, Former lead designer and co-creator of the NGE.

The game was not doing as well as it should have been, according to LA -- this is true. LA tols SOE to make it successful -- also understandable.

Then, Dan, Jeff and others (all SOE employees) came up with the NGE, and they SOLD the idea to LA. LA approved, and the rest is history. LA was in no position to know better, but SOE should have.

What forced the NGE. SOE's mismanagement -- which led to the game being broken throughout it's history. had THAT been fixed, the game would have been better -- but Smedley had to blame Koster and WoW, instead of his own incompetence.

THAT's what forced the NGE. Not LA.

From my experience in swg i'd say it's because SOE don't care about their product or customers(players) and are only about making money.

If they cared about their product it wouldn't be as substandard and bug riddled as it is

If they cared about their players their wouldn't be anywhere near as much bad feeling about them out there

Lucas wanted something new in the game, SOE told lucas it was really good, lucas trusted SOE and then SOE went ahead and shat on SWG, end of story.

I just want to throw something in here for those who think SOE is the only shitty part of Sony.

I don't know how many of you have ever heard of a site called Lik-Sang.com, but it was where I used to get all my Playstation, PSP, and DS games from ahead of American release.

These guys were great, and a great business. Totally legal and completely legit. Here is what Sony Europe and Sony Corporate did to these guys( interesting bits highlighted for emphasis, the best is the last bit in orange, sound familiar? ):

Lik-Sang.com Out of Business due to Multiple Sony Lawsuits
Tue Oct 24 2006 21:58:51 Hong Kong Time - Corporate Info

OUT OF BUSINESS NOTICE

Hong Kong, October 24th of 2006 - Lik-Sang.com, the popular gaming retailer from Hong Kong, has today announced that it is forced to close down due to multiple legal actions brought against it by Sony Computer Entertainment Europe Limited and Sony Computer Entertainment Inc. Sony claimed that Lik-Sang infringed its trade marks, copyright and registered design rights by selling Sony PSP consoles from Asia to European customers, and have recently obtained a judgment in the High Court of London (England) rendering Lik-Sang's sales of PSP consoles unlawful.

As of today, Lik-Sang.com will not be in the position to accept any new orders and will cancel and refund all existing orders that have already been placed. Furthermore, Lik-Sang is working closely with banks and PayPal to refund any store credits held by the company, and the customer support department is taking care of any open transactions such as pending RMAs or repairs and shipping related matters. The staff of Lik-Sang will make sure that nobody will get hurt in the crossfire of this ordeal.

A Sony spokesperson declined to comment directly on the lawsuit against Lik-Sang, but recently went on to tell Gamesindustry.biz that "ultimately, we're trying to protect consumers from being sold hardware that does not conform to strict EU or UK consumer safety standards, due to voltage supply differences et cetera; is not - in PS3's case - backwards compatible with either PS1 or PS2 software; will not play European Blu-Ray movies or DVDs; and will not be covered by warranty".

Lik Sang strongly disagrees with Sony's opinion that their customers need this kind of protection and pointed out that PSP consoles shipped from Lik-Sang contained genuine Sony 100V-240V AC Adapters that carry CE and other safety marks and are compatible world wide. All PSP consoles were in conformity with all EU and UK consumer safety regulations.

Furthermore, Sony have failed to disclose to the London High Court that not only the world wide gaming community in more than 100 countries relied on Lik-Sang for their gaming needs, but also Sony Europe's very own top directors repeatedly got their Sony PSP hard or software imports in nicely packed Lik-Sang parcels with free Lik-Sang Mugs or Lik-Sang Badge Holders, starting just two days after Japan's official release, as early as 14th of December 2004 (more than nine months earlier than the legal action). The list of PSP related Sony Europe orders reads like the who's who of the videogames industry, and includes Ray Maguire (Managing Director, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe Ltd), Alan Duncan (UK Marketing Director, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe Ltd), Chris Sorrell (Creative Director, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe Ltd), Rob Parkin (Development Director, Sony Computer Entertainment Europe Limited), just to name a few.

"Today is Sony Europe victory about PSP, tomorrow is Sony Europe’s ongoing pressure about PlayStation 3. With this precedent set, next week could already be the stage for complaints from Sony America about the same thing, or from other console manufacturers about other consoles to other regions, or even from any publisher about any specific software title to any country they don’t see fit. It’s the beginning of the end... of the World as we know it", stated Pascal Clarysse, formerly known as the Marketing Manager of Lik-Sang.com.

"Blame it on Sony. That's the latest dark spot in their shameful track record as gaming industry leader. The Empire finally 'won', few dominating retailers from the UK probably will rejoice the news, but everybody else in the gaming world lost something today."

The question should be, Why does SOE care so little about their player community's opinion?

I can sum up the hate without even referencing (directly) SWG.

SOE, and its parent company, are pretty much completely twisted...each sharing some of the most reviled business practices ever uttered in decent company.  To compare....if SOE (or Sony in general) were an industrial facility, they would lay off a thousand workers and move to some very poor country where they would pay pennies on the hour to their new employees just to save a dollar or two a year.  They really don't care, or even bother to THINK most times, about the more nuanced desires of their customers....or about deceny in general even.

That isn't to say they are the ONLY ones, by far.  They are, however, among the cockiest and most bold about it.

Why people don't like SOE?

  • Star Wars is big.
  • Lots of fans all over the world.
  • ONE Star Wars mmorpg on the market.
  • High population.
  • People enjoy playing.
  • People use time and money on the game.
  • Then SOE and LA change the game.
  • New combat system.
  • Less professsions.
  • Less nice looking animations.
  • Less of a lot of thing.
  • Change, change. change!
  • People leave.
  • SOE hate was born!

Played:

I hate SOE for one reason, i was banned from star wars galaxies (my first offense!!) permanently and they said it was for 'language violations',  Now seriously.. first offense? i played that game for 3 years and they banned me PERMANENTLY on one offense without warning.  THATS why i hate SOE.
