| MMORPG.com: | Give us a summary of the new Chronicle system in Star Wars Galaxies. |
| Tony "Teesquared" Tyson: | The Chronicles system introduces the ability for players to create quest content in Star Wars Galaxies. It's a content creation system that makes generating user content a fun and rewarding game in itself |
| MMORPG.com: | What kind of quests can crafters expect to run for these missions? |
| Tony "Teesquared" Tyson: | Currently we have a relic type called craft item. Relics are the building blocks of quests. Each relic equates to a task you can put in your quest. So far we have over a 250 different crafting relics and plan to continue adding them. |
| MMORPG.com: | What kind of NPCs will players be able to place in these holocrons? |
| Tony "Teesquared" Tyson: | You don't place NPCs into the holocrons. You gather, kill, or loot relics and consume them to add those types of tasks to your quest. There are hundreds of mob types include Krayt Dragons, Meatlumps, Tusken Raiders, Nightsisters, and many more. |
| MMORPG.com: | Will group holocrons transport players to a separate instance? |
| Tony "Teesquared" Tyson: | Chronicles is currently open world or shared instance. Some relics are tasks that require you to enter an instance, like Hoth, in order to complete them. The relics are not required to go into the instance. |
| MMORPG.com: | Can you create chronicle missions in NPC cities such as Mos Eisley, Theed, and Coronet City? |
| Tony "Teesquared" Tyson: | You can create chronicle holocrons anywhere and they can send you anywhere. |
| MMORPG.com: | Does implementing a system to allow players to generate their own content mean that SWG is going to stop receiving new systems and updates? |
| Tony "Teesquared" Tyson: | Absolutely not. For example, our next update is Game Update 14: Death Troopers. This is brand new content. In addition, we are adding Chronicle relics to allow players to use this new content in their quests. |
| MMORPG.com: | Can players run multiple missions in the same area? |
| Tony "Teesquared" Tyson: | Yes. You can have up to 4 active chronicle quests. They can send you to the same location and you may revisit that location in future quests. |
| MMORPG.com: | Can players use this system in space as well as land? |
| Tony "Teesquared" Tyson: | Space was not part of the initial release. Based on the positive player feedback we have received for this system, we are excited about adding space support in the future. |
| MMORPG.com: | How will the PvP quests work? Will this just mean going Special Forces for the missions? |
| Tony "Teesquared" Tyson: | Right now PvP quests are limited to killing opposing faction players of a specific rank or higher. In the future, as we expand on the Galactic Civil War, we also plan to expand the PvP support in the Chronicles system. |
| MMORPG.com: | Will killing NPCs on these missions give XP towards leveling? If so how will this prevent new players from power leveling? |
| Tony "Teesquared" Tyson: | Yes, killing NPCs during a Chronicles quest will give XP toward leveling. The XP you earn is not controlled by the creator, so it's not exploitable. The NPCs you fight during a Chronicles quests are worth the same XP as you would get fighting them normally. In addition, you gain XP from the Chronicles system by completing a quest, but this is again not controlled directly by the Chronicler, but rather by the difficulty of the relics used to create the quest. |
| MMORPG.com: | Can players create missions with include the use of structures? |
| Tony "Teesquared" Tyson: | Not currently. |
| MMORPG.com: | Will Chronicles rely on any crafted components? |
| Tony "Teesquared" Tyson: | No, the creation of Chronicle holocrons relies on relics which can be traded, purchased, or looted. No crafting required. If you are a crafter, you will have a chance to receive relics as you craft, just like combat classes have a chance to receive a relic for killing creatures. |
We created our own player content before the dark times, before the NGE.
What we did not need is another group of in game quests to hold ours hands like little babies to create content. But then again ,we were older players with intelligence and imagination not the better players SOE was trying to obtain by flipping the game into the NGE.
So true, for a game that had so little content at release I remember having more guild events and town events and PVP empire vs rebel battles at our town. It was amazing and never the same day twice in many years of play. I just think how i took such a great time for granted since it was my first serious mmo. At the time I just thought thats how most mmo's must work then later I found out just how wrong I was. I've been searching for my next SWG ever since.
Oh boy, I already see where this thread is going. Bunch of crying vets who can't let go remembering the "good ol days".
While I sympathize with Jester and Trey, being a vet myself, I am curious about this system. This is something SOE promised for years. If it brings more (or any) fun for the present players, good deal.
If this system is sucessful, it would be nice to see it emulated in other games.
Know what I think? I think they are scrambling for new content before the next SW themed game gets released.
IMHO, sounds like a last ditch effort.
These people saying vets crying, lol, look at the population of the game from beginning to now, that speaks for itself, so you little juniors can keep babbling on an on . swg needs to put a fork in this game, it's over with. They had the chance at the beginning and it's just flat out finished. They can add all this new content and keep trying to act like everything is still going good but look at all these reviews over the years. The game is OVER! Once SWTOR hits we all know what's going to happen.
Can we create the old skill system? Nope, still epic fail.
SWG in many ways is better now then pre cu.
No longer is it about who has the uber mind dot weapon.
Auto target is back. Crafting is the best out of any MMO and is very important.
Expertise system lets you mimmick many of the old templet mixes.
Pre CU vets still looking for their "SWG" really need to give SWG a honest look. I did in 08' and I been back enjoying it ever since.
Some things just can't be fixed.. they've tried.. they failed. Please give up and let it die..
As far as content, the playerbase certainly can't do much worse than the dev team (zombies?). While adding CoX's Architect system to SWG will be nice for the players, it does nothing to fix the core game mechanics, which are a broken and unfun mess.
The Zombies are actuallly well recieved.
And when it comes to Zombies and Star Wars. This is not something that is made up by the game designers or SOE or even "evil" Smed. No. Its a book. its the SWG lore that have developed like this.
A lot has happened with SWG lore since 1978 and Darth Vader & Co. Some good or some bad. But the game adapts to the current development in the lore. So please stop blaiming the game for everything.
All the anger and frustration towards SOE and this game is well past pathetic stadium now.
Beyond the stupidity of the zombie book itself, it was the lead dev and the former SOE producer of the game that begged LEC to allow them to add a zombie themepark to SWG. The former SOE producer is a horror movie fan and wanted to add zombies as soon as he heard about the book (he said so in the initial announcement of the zombie themepark on the official forums). Just think what might have been added to the game if anyone on the dev team was a Star Wars fan...
So were in SW lore does an Ewoks with wings? Muahaha, only in The SOE-SWG lore for their wishy-washy wa-wa way to celebrate The RL Valentine's Day!
I don't care if Zombies are part of SW Lore , what I do care about is SOE is using it because all of their half-baked original ideas end up as EPIC FAILS ( it feels so good to say it when its oh so true).
Zombie Themepark ? Sorry, you are infringing on Six Flags territory.
I wonder if there as ever been a more appropriate example of too little too late....
I did in April and found it to be the same lame game that it was directly after the NGE.
The Zombies are actuallly well receieved. (just read official forums). Maybe not by lore nerds though but they cant attack the game developers.

I just have to say that I am one of the SWG vets.. one that started playing the game in 2004 even before we had any kind of speeders :p or vehicles. And I continued to play it until I left it almost in tears after NGE (I had numerous accounts at that time and loved every pixel to death).
I was angry and frustrated and hated everything since my loved addiction had been so badly wounded by a game update (NGE). But even if things have gone slow. They have fixed more and more and I dare saying that the game is almost as good and in some ways better than before NGE. The problem now is not the game that much anylonger, its the people who sees it as a target practise dummy for their anger and frustration.
Why do I even bother to post here?.. well its because I learned by doing something that is really good in many arenas of life. Anger management and give peace a chance :P
And if you hate SWG so much that there is not way you will go back, then why even read about it and comment treads about it if the only thing you want to write is how crap you think it is. I mean that almost tells more about you as a person?
I beg to differ the games problems now is a derth of uninteresting content atleast in the sense to actually make this game profitable. It would be lovely to think that someone like myself or even Jester would have such a grand effect on a mighty empire like Sony but alas we would only be kidding ourselves to believe that. I won't say that SOE does not have hurdles to get over that the average producer may not but again no one made SOE pull the bait and switch at all let alone the way they did it.
I don't find myself at war with SOE so I see no reason to consider "giving peace a chance" I've played galaxies as recently as April of this year and found it to be as crappy and devoid of content, imagination, or fun as it was pre CU the difference again was many of the trappings that worked pre cu are not there so me personally I will continue to comment about the game and until SOE actually puts something in the game worthy of praise or a change in view of the game my comments aren't going to be rosey.
And honestly what motivates a person to comment about something does not seem like something you get to decide just as I would not presume to tell you not to say you don't like LOTRO and why (which is my favorite mmo right now) it is your opinion and your very right to express your opinion. But even more telling is maybe the fact that fans of good games out here like EVE,LOTRO and such don't need to try to debunk negative commentary about the games we play as the games do a good enough job of that themselves and that's what all fans of mmos need to consider, if your game was truly any good nothing anyone could say would negatively effect that games health you don't believe me as Blizzard and fans of WOW.
Lore, who needs lore if WoW is doing it... like almost everything else that has been introduced into SWG.. it's nothing new or original in concept.
"WoW has these seasonal events that players just eat up, so I think we should say screw the lore and fluff the game a bit."
or
"Hey lets introduce a PVP system. Any ideas? Anyone? Ok how did WoW do it?"
or
"Players want something epic, so does anyone have some ideas? No? Well I hear WoW does a lot of instances with heroic encounters.. lets do that."
or
"Collections are working well in EQ2, why not port it over to this game?"
or
"I hear that CoX has this cool mission architect system that a lot of their players are having fun with, lets do something like that."
So is this just an excuse for them to stop adding their own content and remove the remaining devs now?
I skipped the article, went right to the comments, expected (well-deserved) NGE hate from SWG vets and leave satisfied.
I just love how every single SWG article you read on any site has nothing but NGE hate in the comments. It makes for some of the most entertaining reads.
LOL- true true- BUT I am a $OE hater (not just for NGE- never played galaxies)
Man, when an MMO company (game in this case) burns you badly again and again and again- It really does become true hate. You truly do want to steer people away from said company/game not from "hate" though- But from not wanting others to get "taken"
Its all good though- And makes these threads interesting. =P
Other way around. Other games have had such systems in place far before SWG, Ryzom and City of Heroes come to mind. SWG is always emulating what other games do.
SWG should have this disclaimer..
The game is a big patchwork quilt of systems taken from other games, and put into place with little vision or respect to the lore... Get ready to.. *starts Orgrimmar theme song*, cough *record scratch*, don't we wish guys.. *starts Star Wars theme song*.. enter the Star Wars Universe, immerse yourself with Zombie Storm Troopers and Cupid Ewok..
OMG let this game die already. They will never get a dev team that has a clue and/or is not shackled by the corporate bone heads.
We need control points in space and on ground that give xp and other bonuses, but never mind, JGE has a better flight engine and a better pvp plan. Those guys at ND know what hell they are doing more than the goofy teams SOE puts together. The SWG team has their head buried in the ground and there are so many problems with the fun factor of this game it is time to scrub this joke and get to work on SWG2. You need to catch the twitch-based skill combat system wagon ride along with Fallen Earth and Darkfall. SWG2 needs a revamped engine all around for space and ground. I'm tellin ya this horse is dead stop beating it already with your lame patches.
I had forgotten about CoH system, but SOE was talking some sort of player-content system even before the NGE.
My real point is that I'm glad they finally got around to it. What does it matter if it's copied from another game (I don't know that it is)? I hope it brings fun to the existing playerbase.

The Star Wars Galaxies Chronicals system and the COH Mission Architect system are completetly different in function. They both have the same goal but different executions. SWG's is dependent on looted componets, CoH's requires you to create in a special building. Both are mainly different based on the nature of thier game engines, also.
I agree, however, that the SWG team probably thought Mission Architecture was cool and ran with it. I have played both and enjoy both equally.
Posting to agree with all the SOE and NGE haters out there.
I absolutely loved the game back in the days before the NGE and before player Jedi. I originally left because I got sick of being owned in PvP by an alpha class (Jedi) which I couldn't get unless I wanted to make my toon useless in PvP (read: spend months grinding and have no fun in game) until I managed to unlock. Stupid 1-character-per-server limit.
As a result, I eagerly awaited the promised Combat Upgrade, supposedly a balance to the classes that would make the game fully enjoyable again. When I found out there would be a level system, I was very leery of it, but seeing as how I was already fully-specced I figured I could live with it. Imagine my surprise when, after the NGE, Jedi were still an alpha class and those who didn't have one generally got the short end of the stick.
Luckily, this resulted in me cancelling my subscription to a game I once loved before the NGE hit and made it even more dissimilar to the old game I wanted to play.
As a result, I have no intention of playing any SOE game ever again unless it's a pre-CU version of SWG with player Jedi either nonexistant or truly balanced against the rest of the classes.
The game once had some of the best player created content going........while it was a sandbox game.
Once it was the greatest story ever told...OUR story...then the sand box got ripped out.
What we were left with was what $OE claimed was the greatest story ever told....the game they wanted us to play....THEIRS...and if we didn't like it they had other players to replace us.
So we took our lil'sandshovels and buckets and promptly left.
Somehow the massive replacement numbers never showed...ain't that a shame?
Somehow to me, "Station Pass" seems like the hospice ward of MMO's.
Wrong, this is one vet that wants SWG to just give up the ghost and stick to other IP's to screw up since SWG is a lost cause. Allowing their few remaining subscribers to create content only shows they are grasping for straws just like NCsoft did with CoX and the mission creator system. Bottom line is they dont want to sink anymore money in those IP's so they are letting the subscribers do it for them because it is on it's way out the door finally.
LOL- OMG thats great.
Any problem with me using that for a sig? That is very clever, creative, funny, sad and true all at once.
Well, to be fair might the game also be dying because it is really old. SOE did mess things up, that is true. To totaly change the mechanics and point of a game after launch is always a really stupid idea.
It is a good idea to change things like the AI (you could totaly revamp that) and anything with graphics. It could be a good idea to change the combat system, but it is risky. It is always a bad idea to totaly change the gameplay, you will lose most faithful players.
SOE should have made a new game instead and had it running paralell with SWG, they could have reused the GFX engine and all that instead and just placed the new game in another world. That way they would have kept the old players while getting the new ones into the other game. Even if it would have costed more money they would have a lot more players.
Still, it is easy to say that now. And it might have been Lucas arts idea from the start.
But the reason of the custom content (that seems rather thin to me) is that SOE fears that Bioware will eat them alive. And they will because Bioware are like Blizzard better to know what their fans want then SOE are. That doesn't mean that Bioware will get the old SWG "vets" but I think they will get a lot of the curent players together with the Bioware fans.
Most old SWG players I know are currently playing Eve.
I did in April and found it to be the same lame game that it was directly after the NGE.
But not as lame as before the NGE Bol hunter
I find it truly amazing that SOE didnt just launch a pre NGE server, Ive tried to go back and its a bad experience, the NGE combat was not designed for that engine and is just plain retarded.
The Zombies are actuallly well receieved. (just read official forums). Maybe not by lore nerds though but they cant attack the game developers.

Amen Brother. SAY IT.
I completely /agree. If after what like 3 or 4 years. If you are STILL on your soap box, please please move on and stop trolling and hating every SWG thread on every site on every forums in existence. It's getting real old. And please if you are posting in the official forums. Why are you still paying a company you profess to hate with all your life, energy and soul? Because you can't post in the official forums unless you are a current subscriber.
I get it the NGE ruined your childhood, broke up your marriage, led you to drinking, drug addiction, pushed you in to a life of crime, made you shoplift, drive recklessly, and worst of all, tear the tags off of your pillows!
About a year after the NGE My 20 year old brother committed suicide (im in my 30s) but putting a bullet in is brain. I have gone through the grieving process. I've accepted it and moved on. If I can get through/over the death of a loved one, you can get over a video game being changed.
So please move on. You'll be much happier in the SWTOR forums. The hate will eat you up inside until there is nothing left.
Thank you
I am a vet and not going to go on and on about it, I just wanted ask is there any game SOE has touched that hasnt died on its arse???
sounds like an effort to try and retain customers from moving onto Bioware's game. Any user created content is welcome no matter what the game but i am very very curious to see how this all turns out.
so i can design a quest where i can make my enemy's name like i dont know...
smed, or smedley... just something im kicking around.
can i script his dialog to make him admit to being a transvestite?
ill call my quest "smeds got a secret"
whatcha think?
Bring back old SWG!
stop making lame attempts to cover with band aids the giant spike you plowed into the heart of one of the greatest games of all time.
Is SWG Instanced like Guild Wars and AoC? if so, it is auto-off-my-want-list
I am wondering now if we are going to get a discount on our subs since we are making our own content.....
Just be thankful they aren't charging you extra for the privilege
Dang it! I knew I should have filed a Copyright on that phrase! >.<
Hehe...just kidding...knock yourself out.
Yes a lot of people will run over there. Finish the giant legacy quest, find out there is nothing more and come back.
Ahhhh finally an adult with an IQ bigger than his shoe size. Nicely said.
Of course, just like how Lego gives kids a discount because they get to build their things themselves :/
You have no clue.
Prediction: SWG will be shut down in less than 9 months.
You heard it here first.
Yours in Prognostication Plasma,
Star*Dagger
"so any chance soe will ever offer a classic server?"
Torres "Well what if someone discovers an exploit?"
....
ummm....
That was Julio Torres' reason for never offering classic servers...anyone else remember that interview on attack of the show?
Has soe ever to this day truely said they blew it when they shoved NGE on us?
So for all you vet haters out there....we'll blow your planet up!
The line must be drawn here! THIS FAR AND NO FARTHER!!!!!
edit:
a buddy of mine signed up THIS month to see if the game is any better......NO. the population on BRIA is DEAD DEAD DEAD...he saw 20 ppl TOTAL in several star ports..all the major cantinas too...
DEAD.
This game has been dead for so many years, it needs to be buried and the devs who made the decision buried with all copies of the game code.
Ever since the SWG dick-stepping, anything SOE is unacceptable. I was in the Vanguard alpha & beta from the beginning and when SOE stepped in I ran away screaming. I avoid everything SOE like the plague.
Burn me once, shame you you. Burn me twice, shame on me.
so i have t loot for components to add to my own quests...bah
pass
There is an alternative. You can run others quests and earn silver coins towards booster packs for Chronicles Relics. But its just as easy to kill... well, everything in the game to get relics. You can also craft to earn them as well.

or i can jsut load City of Heroes and do....nothing to get most of the architect centent i need to make a story
Ugh. I can see where this is going. A retard with nothing much to offer except point click. point click.
1) There are *some* things that are better about the game as it stands today, I agree, but they ripped the soul of the game out when they removed the skill system, and all the unique professions. Like all the other class-based games out there, SWG is full of character clones, and anything resembling individuality is long gone. This, in my opinion is a HUGE problem with almost every game on the market today.
2) agreed on Mind Dots
3) Crafting is still basically the same great system, but it's useless for most trader paths. Players simply do not need or care about most of the crafted items, unlike the pre-nge version of the game where the player driven economy was probably the strongest aspect of the entire game. (see my last comment below for more info on this)
4) The Expertise system is a hollowed out shell compared to the old skill system, and you can't dabble anywhere near as much to create interesting and unique characters. It's a step in the right direction, but it's not enough.
I go back and check into the game every six months or so, and the game just feels soulless now. The players were the game before. Now you have to actually rely on the game play elements to have fun, and by that measure, the game is still very broken and fragmented.
As a side note: One of the reasons Pre-NGE SWG worked so well, and developed a strong in-game community was that you could only have ONE character per paid account on each server, unless you unlocked your jedi slot. Because of this, all the players on the server learned to interact with one another, much like they do in real life, to get things done. What you have in SWG and almost all the other games on the market today, is a system where people can roll almost as many toons as they want, and they don't need other player for anything. Yes, in the old SWG some people bought multiple accounts, but even if you had two paid accounts, you still had to rely on other people for day to day tasks. In my humble opinion, this was another key ingredient in the recipe that created the strong, intertwined community that us vets loved. There are other reasons too, but this is a big one.
This was also one of the elements of the Pre-NGE's down fall. No matter how much you and I loved the interdependance of the game there were many more that didn't. A great many players did not want thier game play dependent on others. You may believe that no one posted such complaint but the majority that dont post just left. It wasn't the dedicated player that SOE & LA wanted but those that left silently in mass or wouldn't try the game after tasting the waters in WOW. Which was a bigger demographic?

Yes, and now that every one of those soloists have got their way, virtually every game out on the market today is a yawn-fest. There are no communities and very little player interaction. People barely even talk to each other within their own guilds let alone outside of them. Then people sit back and wonder why they are getting sick of the games and the whole genre. You don't get your cake and eat it to. If you want your game to be a virtual world, then there has to be structure that make it so.
All this means to me is that there is plenty of room for more smaller MMO's that don't cater to the solo players who crave instant gratification. I understand which demographic is bigger. I also know that there is a growing number of gamers who are sick of being led around by the nose in all these shallow games. Try one theme park and you have tried them all.
Ultimately, the whole genre will have to evolve due to evolving tastes of the players. The Disney Land o' Quests game theory wares thin quickly. Especially after you leave a game like WoW looking for something more/different. There will always be a big market for the WoW-clones, but there is a growing market looking for something deeper.

Correct, and this is further the trend when an IP enters the market. IP holders don't want experiments or systems that have proven to perform less than WOW. This is why I am sad for STO not exploring its full potential as the techie game it should be. EVE is proving to be the only sandbox, successful MMO, but it took 6 years to get there. The "box on the shelf" mentality still prevails with those holding IP's.
Last ditch effort would be to restore the original game :) wouldn't that be just hilarious. I think it'd be.
I agree completely. The community that evolved on the various servers I have not found matched anywhere else.
I've always considered it odd that developers haven't stolen the good parts of SWG and improved apon them, but I guess this is because it's not mainstream enough and thus does not carter for a large enough player base to warrent.
A shame.

And there is one of your answers to why there is no company making a Pre-CU/NGE like game. It is seen by the industry as a failure because it was loosing subs. It was loosing subs because it was an incomplete buggy game... not the format. It became a moot point, however, when WOW launched and all eyes hovered to the prize.
Its been years since the NGE/CU stuff and the same people who still have not let their disappointment/anger go, keep coming back to SWG and making comments, its like a sick twisted love-hate thing that they keep coming back to nourish and wallow in it.
Its seriously disturbing, but to each their own.
I know, I know I miss it too and I stopped playing a long time ago, I play now but I treat it as a whole different game and enjoy it...I really missed the crafting and love playing gawd with the incubator and pumping out little mutants =),
Combat is eehh, no better, no worse then a lot of games I play...which is considerable, I spend a crap load per month on sub's..
But I have 4 houses setup, with my crafters and I got a decent business going selling resources and animals, its fun for me and thats what I pay the sub's for.
Hope this new content will add another dimension to the game and if the game bombs..well there are tons of other places I will spend my money and new games always coming down the line to try.
Let the anger go, its a dead dog and no matter how much we beat it...it is still dead.
