Which leads into my second issue, better graphics are fine but ps1 pushed the boundaries to what could be done and now could be made to look better, but to this degree? I have massive doubts especially on the scale they are talking about. How are they resolving the issue of processes per cycle to make it look that good and all the extra features without having cshd? Because if it is, all those COD/fpsand casual players people are saying will save this game, will not touch it with a barge pole.

The game engine itself is designed to run on 5 year old PCs at fanfaire Smedley say this engine from the very core was designed so you could optimize it to run on a 5 year old PC or a brand new PC.   If they were using a 3rd party Engine id worry but they're using an engine where they have direct access to the development team and can get any fixes/changes made that they need done by the people who actually created this engine.   Not only that he said it is designed for MMOs from the ground up meaning it was designed with the idea that you would have 100s or thousands of people in the same area at the same time.   That is something other game engines were not designed to handle (unreal, hero, cry) engines to be specific were all single player games or multiplayer where the most people you would have in the same area was  20-30.

Gamespot interview with Higby: http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=t3c-XQgc1QE

Some random guy:   Planetside2 is gonna be lvl 60 players curb stomping lvl 1 player

Higby:   Planetside2  will have 5 year players who are still suspect of being beaten by a 5 minute player if the 5 minute player gets the jump on the 5 year player.   must like planetside 1

Planetside 1 could be played casually just as easly. Planetside 2 is 100% dumbed down to fast respawn and fast life / death respawn. Removing half the tactical abilitys of a squad. Im fine with them making the game alot like battlefield. I dont like the class system and spawning on people mechanics. they remove all the importants of living / working togeather

Did you ever think the respawn is fast atm because its in alpha beta atm and they would rather test the game out and if they spent time dead there would be as much time to test the game.

This is the future game engine every new MMO will be measured by if people know what I mean.  SOE Developed Forge Light a next generation Game Engine that is being developed for their upcoming MMOs PS2 and EQNext and you can bet they will license it out to future companys for use.  The graphics look amazing and if they think they can pull off no lag in this engine in a FPS with hundreds of people in the same area it will be amazing for a true MMORPG.

For people who complain this game is being made for the casual player it is not being made for the hardcore PS player you want full servers and epic battles ?  Guess what 80% of them players in them epic battles are casual players.   SOE is marketing this for the masses not some niche market of FPS players they want the casual people who play.

I see the engine they are making here with Forge Light 2 as being in the crowd of next gen. Everything looks fantastic and from the videos with the use of jetpack as infrantry and how it seemed in relation to the enviroments and vehichels was very impressive. These guys are definately on the right track here and I'm very interested in seeing the finished product of everything. Taking that was Alpha gameplay says alot for where the developers are and that they have a good sense of what they are trying to create and are making their game feel exactly like that.

They're design was already quite promissing with their first attempt with Planetside and back then I knew something was a little different with this game and the fact that no one else truely attempted since then goes to show the scope of what they were going for in the first game. Again I'm pleased with where they are now; considering they've had a good amount of time to refine everything and develope their engine to a point where it has crossed into quite possibly the "next generation" category (IMHO).

As a note to other titles that have recently released or are yet to release. These are the same type of steps they should be making in their games. Simply in 2012 there's no reason you should be releasing a game that feels like it was meant for a time 3 or 4 years ago. I understand why developers are a little shaky to move away from the common design in the MMO genre, but NOW these carbon copies are just becoming plain out jokes.

STRAIGHT MONEY GRABS! The developers sit around coming up with more ways to /duck their playerbase and bewilder them with questionable changes and carrot-on-a-stick patch promises...

"Yea Bioware I'm talkin bout you.."

There's a good amount of hype for PS2 though just like most other games but this time around these guys might actually be developing on their hype and may be worth the 1.7 MIllion + purchases/players they might just pick up. If the word of this game can really get out I would not be surprised if it really does challenges Star Wars numbers and  I'd GARUNTEE their retention rate would be much more promising..

The new lightforge engine is making me look forward to seeing some Everquest next gameplay but i still think its still a year or so to early atm to see that prob after planat side comes out there will be more focus on it, I dont care how long it takes them aslong as they do it right and this new engine is looking great for it aswell : )

To be fair, at GDC in the videos, they said you can spec down the galaxy tree to become a mobile spawnpoint. Now, that might get taken out if theres enough of a complaint by the original Planetside community, however I don't really see the problem with fast respawn. I never played the original Planetside, so I don't know what dying and respawning was like, but I think it adds a new element to it in that if you destroy the galaxy= no respawns, so it sort of creates this key focal point to defend your bases from galaxys and the battle buses, since they bring with them troops and the like. Though I can sympathize with the original PS1 community in that it does sound pretty awesome to have to take your giant carrier/bus and pick up all the soldiers, then wheel them out there, basically making the galaxy and battle bus useful rather then "Ok go fly that thing here and everyone will spawn on it, then you do nothing" type of thing.

I agree, I don't like the idea of squad spawning. I do hope they have rezzing like in BF3, that way squads can stick together longer, and have more options to coordinate together, otherwise being able to just warp in on a squad member is just dumb. Because then, you just get one guy to sneak into a base, and then everyone spawns on him and its an instant base rape with little to no effort.

As for the classes, I honestly think thats a much better route to go down, rather then classlessness. If soldiers don't have a class, they aren't limited to what they can use, so then it just becomes "Alright, if you don't have a rocket launcher, sniper and shotgun+some sort of automatic, your a shit player and you should feel bad". It just becomes a giant One-man-army game, and honestly thats no fun.

I like the idea of having to drive in a troop transport of fly a carrier to land a mobil spawn point. Makes destroying them a priority.

From my limited knowledge of those xbox fps eg call of duty/black ops, watching some flatmates respawn/respawn may make sense for those matchplays, but I think for mmo, there should be more depth to it than just that?

The destroying spawn-points, had not thought about that, could be a good way to go. However, easy to cave in to the individual spawn quickly, but is that detrimental to the maps/strategy over the long term??

Missed PS, man I wish I'd known about that one... so can only speculate...

So the mobile spawn point is a Gal that's parked on the ground and deployed

How is that any different than spawning in PS1?

Those of you that are crying about the spawning in PS 2 obviously don't remember AMS being deployed at every base you attacked.

If one got destroyed it was only a matter of time before someone put up another one. Sometimes there were spare AMS laying around waiting to be deployed.

The galaxy spawning is no different. We don't even know how the squad spawning will work. I'm sure that there will be limitations. We will see in beta.

Comparing PS 2 to COD is a bit ridiculous.

Call of duty spawning / item system.. Game is doomed

Looks good if your into FPS but I thought this was a MMO site?  I might try it still since it might be a persistent world environment but I still much prefer mideval style MMO sword and sorcery and 3rd person more.  Who knows maybe this might be ok so time will tell, still I dont trust SOE.

Again,     MMO  is not exclusive to  games that have mandatory skill bars, instances ,flying pink mounts and epic purples.

MMO is of massive multi  online,   large number of people in a giant world.

what planetside2 is not is a MMORPG,   but a MMOFPS.

there is no written rule that all MMO's must have elves, orcs and fireballs.

these days anyway, companies have been getting away with all sorts of murder tacking on MMO, specifically MMOFPSes on their title, only to deliver some lobby system in a 12 v 12 arena.  so Planetside 2, much like the first PS game, isnt going anywhere on this site.

PFFF dust 514 rape this game already

The fact that Dust 514 is PS3 on exclusive = fail game already.

Uhh... what?

You know, this will be a truly great game as long as they can keep the cheatin, hackin, sicko mofos out.  That was a serious prob with PS1.

If you can't kill it, don't make it mad.

Well... This still is SOE... So I'd expect them to make some minimal effort, but nothing really effective.  That takes more time/talent/focus than SOE has demonstrated in the past.
