and they will be deafened by people in a different time zone, your point?

Well, it all depends on the empire balance at that certain time.. it fluxuates constantly, so its not like time differences will make one side more powerful, or one side less. Sure people will have to log off, but more people are logging in too. Thats where the 3 empires really shine, even if your empire is out numbered theres always opportunity to have fun.

Must admit, this looks inviting. What was the average time it took to resolve a conflict in a zone from start to finish? And when it was won by one side or the other, would it have any impact overall?

ive seen some continents be contested for days on end, probably even weeks

I would like to point to one syndrome we called: Cyssorside.

Due to how large it is, and the access from all Empires, this map is almost ALWAYS contested. And at points, it gets so ridiuclous, that all other  combat elsewhere ceases as the three Empires duke it out on Cyssor.

This can go on for WEEKS. I remember my first time playing we were locked in such a situation. It lasted at LEAST a full week of straight fighting. One side would get shoved into their corner, then the two other factions would start pounding each other, and the third empire would push back out, and the cycle would continue.

Now to some that may sound boring. But let me tell you it was not. And it made the glorious victory of the NC, who eventually managed to smash through and take the continent, all the more sweet.

And this was but one incident. On one server(Back before there was Gemini, they servers for timezones, and Europe.)

Planetside still has decent battles even today, when you don't have Gunships turning everything to paper.

ON certain servers (back in the day)   the persistant battles, playstyles, philosophies all meshed together that brought out some interesting historical lore about all 3 empires, both good and bad.

during my time,  i too participated in Cyssorside, down south the vicious bridge battles that stretched from one side to the next, the longest 1 minute in your life to try to get past the all the firing, bombings, missle attacks, obital strikes, snipers, suicide sundy buses, tank groups you name it. and when you finally get past the bridge to the other side. YOU FIGHT TO GET OVER TO THE OTHER SIDE.

NC for a time had certain outfits that dedicated themselves to have large air bomber groups. at times you could have all the AA you want and the bombs still kept on dropping

TR, it varried, early in the years KAAOS lead one of the most massive air raids constantly on emerald server. when people took to the skies and chat was screaming (30+ TR aircraft coming east past the mountains!!) you knew it was KAAOS.

the VS, we had dadga, dadga being a interlink base. for the longest time when the links were different,  Dadga ended lives, marriages, peoples jobs, their 401k plan, had foreclosed on some houses too. I do not exaggerate that Dadga for  while was a true bane towards any empire that was responsible in defending said base. When VS nearly down and out, they drop everything and say screw this, lets take dadga. and at any time if the enemy was too lazy to stop the base hack from flipping. Then will they better get ready to pack a couple of sandwiches because they were going to be their for a long while.

thing is there are many more historical moments in planetside from other servers, it was some of the things that brought life int othe game and it wasnt dictated by some golden exclaimation point dude sitting next to some rainbow colored hamster.

QFT. Whenever I think of the Planetside community I am astonished at how awesome it was compared to most other MMO games. Planetside supported one of the best communities I have ever experienced and I only hope the sequal will be the same.

Another newbie question here: are there options for left-handers to change the point of view? or if there aren't, are they going to make some?

thankyou

OP you missed a lot if you didn't get to play Planetside in it's hayday. You'll see just how much of potential there is with multi-faction persistent combat soon, if SOE doesn't dissapoint.

So, I've never played PS1, though I did look into it a couple of times over the years, I just never got into it. I am very excited to be able to play this game, for what i'm hoping it is, a giant persistant warzone with real time territory control, real command structure, where skill takes dominance over gear.

So my question: In the original Planetside, are the planets open and persistant in that you could fly around/run around the entire planet with no "changing zones" type deal, only a zone change for each planet? Or was it just friggin huge maps?

In the original you had a home base planet, you go through warpgates to get to planets that you fight for control of. A set number of people for all 3 sides made for epic, no lag battles, that would last for hours and hours sometimes on just one planet. Once you go through a warpgate to a planet or you use the instant to battle choice it's seamless throughout the whole planet, no instancing or waiting on loading screens once you're there. You are free to run, fly, or use ground vehicles to bases throughout the whole planets, working toward your objectives. Leaders were able to give you waypoints to go to, made moving dozens of people through the maps very easy and very coordinated.

What happens when you log off your characters????.....
