Salem News - New Dev Diary Sheds Light on Professions

Posted by Suzie Ford on Dec 05, 2011  | 8 comments in our forums

As part of Paradox Interactive's Advent Calendar, the Salem team, and more specifically "Brother Bean", has posted a look at the historical reference to five of the professions players will be able to choose from: Agriculture, Swimming, Botany, Firearms and Compacts & Constitutions.

One of the central features of character development in Salem are the learning skills that each character possesses, acquires and uses. The skills determine a wide range of things in game -- perhaps most importantly what crafts and builds are available to the character in question -- and they are all gifted with a short historical or otherwise relevant lore text to illustrate them. Digging up lore texts for skills is one of the development tasks that have fallen on my lot, and so I get to spend much of my time reading through obscure Wikipedia articles. One may thus say that I with regards to my present profession can be considered a fortunate man, since reading obscure Wikipedia articles is pretty much what I would be doing with my time even if I weren't in the business of developing computer games. So, without further ado, here are, in ascending order, the five best quotes that I've managed to dig up, and the skills that use them.
