Dark & Light Mini Q&A #1

Today we kick off a bi-weekly Monday series of Q&As with Farlan, the folks behind the highly anticipated virtual World Dark & Light. In this first Q&A we discuss the progress of the game with Gilles Zedde, the Lead Designer of Dark & Light.

MMORPG.com:Could you please tell us a little about yourself, what you do for the team, nicknames, embarrassing stories, etc?
Gilles Zedde:

I am Gilles Zedde, also known as Zedux, and I am the Lead Game Designer for Dark and Light. I mostly take care of rules design and coherence in the vast world of Ganareth.

Besides the fact that our future players can enjoy DnL, my main goal is to allow every player to feel his or her own influence within the world, in any activity he or she chooses:

  • As a fighter, a player can expand his or her territory on Ganareth by taking fortresses
  • As a lord, and depending on their rank, a player will have to take important political decisions, giving priority to the defense of the fortress and the efficiency of the exploitations within his or her own territory.
  • As a shop owner or manager, a player will create economic activity in the city and make it thrive by attracting new players to it.
In order to allow this economic structure to run correctly, I believe this is very important that our pioneers are given a sort of mission, and we have a very strong support from the core of our community. This is now the opportunity for me to thanks these people.

MMORPG.com:When we expect something huge from the team as far as new information released?
Gilles Zedde:

I think there will be good news by August, especially for our most faithful members…

MMORPG.com:How would you say development is coming along as far as making deadlines and releasing the game by the goal you’ve set for yourselves?
Gilles Zedde:

I have to admit that we didn’t think so many people would be interested in the game. So, we had to satisfy our community and listen to its expectations. We adapted and developed the game by putting much more effort and time into it. We also had to spend a lot of time completely renewing our graphical engine.

MMORPG.com:How many people would you estimate are in beta now? When, and how many, do you think you’ll add to the pool of testers in the near future?
Gilles Zedde:

There are more than 2000 betatesters at the moment, and we will gradually add more, 1000 by 1000, as our server farm increases.

MMORPG.com:What would you say is your fondest memory so far of the game, either from time spent in the game itself or from working on it ?
Gilles Zedde:

Unfortunately, for now I spend more time working on the game than actually playing it. But it will change as soon as the main structure of the “economic loop” (quests – resources – jobs – fortress capture – political management – economic management) is integrated to the game and all elements are related together, i.e. in 2 or 3 months.

We would like to thank Gilles and the teams at Farlan and Alchemic Dream for making this happen.

We hope this becomes a truly community based Q&A series, and encourage you to drop by this thread on the Dark & Light Boards to pose your questions for future Q&A sessions.

Finally, make your thoughts known on their hype meter and this feedback thread.
