Dark and Light was a 3D fantasy MMORPG from developer NPCube. Boasting of being the largest MMORPG space ever created at 15,000 square miles of virtual terrain. Despite this large world, the game did not employ instancing. All players were within the same world at the same time. The story concerns two sides in opposition, the Dark and Light of the title, fighting for control over the 13 kingdoms of the land of Ganareth. There were 12 races to choose from, with 14 classes among them for a player character to choose before joining up with a side. Most of the kingdoms were PvP oriented spaces, though the game also encouraged roleplay. Although the typical quests (over 500 were included) and hunting were implemented as main ways of leveling, players could create characters for whom leveling was accomplished through means such as crafting. Opportunities also included player influence in the game's political system. The developers intended to give players a measure of freedom in their characters' growth.
Other features included changing seasons, mounts, and a comprehensive guild system that affected gameplay and helped shape strategic choices within the game's 10 PvP kingdoms. Faction level also affected how monsters would treat you. Released as a p2p game in June of 2006, the game had technical issues, and went to a limited free model in 2007. The company's legal and subsequent financial issues led to DnL's shutdown in 2008.
