Is there anything that another player or guild of players own that can be destroyed by me or my guild?  The one sandbox element needed for a sandbox.

I am not talking about RVR or Factions (developer build castles).  RVR and Factions is a theme park thing.

The entire Northern continent supports exactly that. Guild Castles and player houses are attacked and destroyed by the enemy faction. The Northern continent also allows the placement of houses anywhere. If you choose to build in the north, you take a huge risk. All ships are also destroyable or hyjackable.

In addition to all out alliances / destruction on the Northern continent (mentioned above):

On one of the southern continents (before the Northern went in), Yogscast accidentally attacked and set fire to a house they were building as a collective group effort for their show.  It was only partially completed too, lol.  They did so because they couldn't read Korean and were unfamiliar with the interface, and clicked wrong to attack it.

I'm not sure if that is still in, but apparently some level of destruction is possible.  Maybe it can only be done by those entrusted to care for a house (?).  Seems like a waste to put all those resources into something if only the owners can destroy it.  Perhaps someone else knows more.  I believe that was CBT4.

Basically what players need to understand about Archeage is that housing is the lifeblood of the game and the main source of income. Housing allows you to grow crops for trade routes which is the best way to make gold in the game. Or you could take the easy route and take the livestock route and sell milk, wool, etc straight to the vendor. If houses were able to be destroyed anywhere, it would be nearly the same as taking all your gold as you will no longer be able to make anywhere near as much gold until you can rebuild. Also the western and eastern continent have specific areas for housing and can be very competitive so once you loose your spot it is unlikely it will be there when you have the resources to rebuild.

You cannot really look at PvP in this game through the lense of other MMO's and what penalites they have. Archeage PvP is very unique and can be very punishing. Take for instance monitary progression, the more gold you have allows you to invest in vehicles to make even more money with trade routes. You can make a harvester which helps you harvest and water crops but it's main function is to allow you to carry up to 5 trade packs (one on your back) and depending on where you deliver your packages your profit goes up expedentially. Even more gold allows you to create a tradeship which carries even more trade packs. Here is where the danger comes in, if you are attacked and defeated via PvP while trying to transport your packs, all packs will be stolen meaning up to weeks worth of crops gone in an instant and those who take it from you can turn in the packs for their own profit. This creates huge coordinated efforts to transports these packs and the PvP that ensues in transport is the danger.

This is why Archeage can't have destroyable housing everywhere, it would create too high of a penalty and too much reward for those doing it. This is why the northern contenint is there and why many have multiple houses serving specific functions and also why, many will not choose to build in the North without the protection of a guild castle.

So only faction/RVR style destruction?  That would make the game a theme park.

However the Yogcast guys burning down there own home suggest otherwise... and that was an amaging video.  I love Yogcast!

You have safe zones and non-safe zones. If you build a house in a non-safe zone then it can be burnt down. But if your house does get burnt down then all the materials that went to making the house will get sent to your in-box. So the owner just has to find another plot of land to re-build.

But the third continent is controlled by guilds, not factions. A guild can come and plant a big sword into the ground, thus claiming territory.

Here is a video of a guild planting a sword on the third continent and claiming all the lands around the sword.

You need to protect that big sword during a siege, if the sword is destroyed during a siege, then that guild will lose that territory. So guilds build up big walls around the sword to protect it. Most guilds also build towns inside the castle walls as well.

During a siege all that work can be destroyed. So everything on the Third continent is player made and destroyed.

Even EVE online has safe/non-safe zones. Would you call EVE online themepark? :/

From the description of the previous poster ArcheAge actually sounded like EVE on land.

Its not quite that simple. The only true safe zones in the game are pre-level 30. Any 30+ Zone your own faction can flag themselves as an enemy, kill you, and have full access to steal your crops. This is where the crime/prison system comes in, if crops are stolen you track footprints and if he kills you you pick up blood. This counts against his crime score and once he reaches a certain threshhold he is sent to jury and prison. In addition the opposing faction can kill and steal crops in 30+ zones.

What you saw in that video is during the build stage you have the option to destroy it which is the only way to free up the land again. So they were attacking during that stage and didn't know what to do, pretty hilarious video actually.

The resources go back to their inbox?  That would kill the economy at some point.  Once you have a ton of resources you never lose why get more?

Let's say they take the resources out of their inbox.  Can you kill them and take the resources as your own?  Could they sell the resources somewhere?  Resources are perminant and never go away, ever?

You have to have some loss to move forward.  This game souds like it is all the reward and no risk.

Edit: Does the same process happen with guild castle sieges?  No loss of resources?

Nobody knows how Trion will handle these types of things in the western release, only time will tell outside of the information from AA Korea. A game like this needs a lot of players to even be worth playing at all, and western gamers don't respond very well to really harsh penalties, by majority so they'll do whatever will be enjoyable to the most people. Plus, there has been negative reactions by a lot of players in the Korean game to really harsh penalties so it won't surprise me if certain things are changed by XL as well. As long as risks aren't totally removed I'll be happy, to my understanding Trion has total control over server rulesets as well so that may be how they appease the different playstyles. I just hope they don't open too many servers.

There was a lot of talk about housing resources get returned to players who's homes get destroyed in the frontier. At least to some degree.

If they want a lot of players they need different server rulesets to bring in those of us who are done with open world pvp games.  I have zero interest in this as it stands now but I hope Trion will realize how much money there is to be made in a sandbox that doesn't revolve around pvp.

I am convinced there is only one way to eliminate these grave evils, namely through the establishment of a socialist economy, accompanied by an educational system which would be oriented toward social goals.

They need regulated zones. I'm glad they figured that out.

Player control has always translated to undisciplined thuggery. It isn't about harsh and dog eat dog. It's about end result. Nobody is left to pay the bills.

You need search or wait another mmorpg so, because Archeage without pvp is crap. It  was made completely entangled in pvp, and it is what will keep players after the "endgame".

What o.O? I feel that pvp was one of the low priorities in the past half a year when looking all the changes they have made for it.
