  • A Christmas Nightmare

This past week, ArcheAge players had the distinct privilege of being unable to access both North American and European servers for over 24 hours. We still don’t know exactly what happened.

  • How to Defend Your Castle

I was lucky enough to participate in one of this weekend’s castle sieges as an attacker. I’d love to recall for you an epic tale of bravery and destruction, but nothing of the sort actually occurred. Instead, here’s some tips for castle defenders preparing for the next round of sieges.

  • Selling Convenience vs. Content

As far as free-to-play monetization models go, there are a couple of different overarching strategies that dominate today’s market. You have games like ArcheAge, which offers convenience bonuses like elevated experience gain, increased labor points, and more. You can see titles like The Lord of the Rings Online steadily offering some convenience and cosmetic items in their cash shops but doing a great deal of business selling content through quests and expansions.

  • Review in Progress #4 – A Hard Lesson in Safe Trade

As you might recall last week, I obtained my first real seafaring ship: the clipper. One of ArcheAge’s biggest selling points, at least in my eyes, is the crafting and trade game. There are two ways to go about it too: the safe way where you don’t have to worry about danger (but get less reward), or the dangerous way where you have to go into enemy territory (but the payoff is significantly larger). This past week, I learned the difference between the two the hard way.

  • Review in Progress 3 - Farmville Deluxe

ArcheAge is starting to become as addicting as Farmville. Only in this case, I don’t really hate myself for liking the game. I’ve just spent inordinate amounts of time roving the countryside, exploring crafting, and dabbling in a whole bunch of other things. The question I ask myself though is: am I focused on ArcheAge’s crafting and farming because they’re fun, or is it because the questing and combat progression is so old hat?

Normally, we’d wait until the official day of launch or soon after to begin our Review in Progress series. • MMOS - Selling Lifestyles, Not Just Games

Entertainers these days don't seem content to succeed at one thing. That's because making money in the entertainment business just isn't as straightforward as it used to be, so performers have learned to expand their brands beyond music or movies and into other markets. Similarly, game makers are realizing if they want to survive, let alone thrive, they too need to expand their commercial and cultural reach.

  • Trion Worlds' Community Day

For a while I've been meaning to get a peek at ArcheAge, but somehow other things keep getting in the way. Fortunately, I was invited to Trion Worlds' Redwood Shores office for a combination media/community day. Some might say experiencing a game's high level content first is a bit like reading a book back to front. Still, having spent hours since then playing the beta version from the beginning, I'll admit I'm glad I did it that way.

Instead of discussing the latest news Trion Worlds has on ArcheAge, we're going to focus on the game itself. Last week I found my way into the ArcheAge alpha and was finally able to get hands on with it to see what all the rage is from region to region for ArcheAge. Despite all the 1.0 patch nonsense, now I was able to see why everyone in the community has been voicing their opinions so loudly for Trion to hear.

  • Is the Sand Leaving the Box?

XL Games has been calling their MMORPG title ArcheAge a sandpark for quite a while now, a mixture of a themepark and a sandbox game. One would assume it's certainly a sandpark game. You've got trading along the vast seas, 120 different class combinations, castle sieging, housing, and more allowing for players to really leave their impact on the world. But wait a second, let's take a look at a recent update to the Korean version that has some people not quite so happy!

  • Why the Labor System is Good

This isn’t going to make me popular, but I’m going to come out and say it just like Maccarthur says on our forums, I actually kind of like the labor point system. Before the pitchforks come out and people start claiming I’m pro “Pay 2 Win”, let me explain. While I think there could be some improvements to the system, I’m also fairly confident in my belief that the Labor system is better for the overall health of the economy and the game XLGAMES wants us to play.

  • Head Start - Scourge of Patrons

ArcheAge has its fair share of die-hard fans. It’s Tuesday, September 16th, 2014. The game servers should be live and free players should be flooding the authentication server queues. I emphasize “should” because the last few days haven’t been kind to Patrons trying to enjoy their Head Start. Despite having multiple MMO launches under its belt, Trion has managed to fall victim to sophomoric blunders.

Last time around, I discussed free to play and so-called entitlement in the MMO community. Again, this time around, payment models get another look, and it’s in part due to some recent topics that have come up in both the greater gaming community and among MMO players.

  • ArcheAge - Why You Questing, Bro?

ArcheAge is going to be a divisive game… just not for the reasons you might think. We spent some time with the first of several closed beta events for Trion’s upcoming North American release of the game, and we’re suitably enamored. But there’s a sneaking suspicion we all have about ArcheAge: we’re afraid that its underlying complexity is going to be hidden by the upfront simplicity of its questing and PVE design.

  • Delphinad’s Legacy

How long should MMOs last? It’s a question that splits communities and confuses publishers. Some enthusiasts believe an MMO should persist in perpetuum, continuously getting updates, never ending. Others think they should be able to complete the content of a new MMO within a few months, maybe even weeks, of it launching. The recent implementation of Patch 1.2 on Trion World’s ArcheAge alpha servers brought this topic to the forefront of discussion among fans of the game.

Posted on 07/15/2014 by Mark Wilhelm
  • Getting Past the Grind

ArcheAge is most definitely a sandbox-flavored MMO. The seas and roads are alive with trade caravans transporting packs of local specialties. Guilds have claimed land, hastily constructed castles and declared war on one another. Most importantly, crafted gear reigns supreme. For some MMO fans, none of that matters. No amount of open-world interactions can prevent ArcheAge from becoming the target of "Korean grinder" criticism.

This is similar to what SOE has offered for its upcoming EverQuest Next: Landmark. Trion also offers “support” packs for its upcoming release, Trove, that run up to $2500.
