  • Behind the Community Team’s Curtain

When several of our podcasters at Sitting on a Couch emailed me that Firefall was patching and going live in just a few months, I could only shake my head sadly at what I perceived would be an ill-fated first step. Then I saw the patch notes, and was blown away at the level of change that they were incorporating just before launch. Vertical scaling, simplified missions, ability unlocks at progression, and a full on end-game raid! Yes, Please!

  • Turning Their Fate Around

After a turbulent beta, FireFall has finally launched, surprising us all with a much improved MMO shooter. During Gamescom, columnist Gareth Harmer caught up with Red 5 designer David Williams to get an update on the current state on the game, and a couple of hints on what's coming down the pipeline.

  • Much Better, But Still In Progress

All MMOs are a work in progress long after launch, I get that. But Firefall from Red5 Studios is a particularly special case. Years and years into development, the game has seen complete re-works on several occasions, the most recent of which came after the founder and CEO Mark Kern was removed from his position. Development went dark, and Red5 went hardcore and all-in towards making a game in which they all believed.

  • Review in Progress #1

For all intents and purposes, Firefall "launched" in 2013. But a lot has happened at developer Red5 since then, and much more has changed with Firefall the game since the departure of former CEO Mark Kern. For those reasons, we're re-reviewing Firefall over the next couple of weeks to paint a more accurate picture of where the game stands today.

  • Red5's Second Shot Nails Its Target

I really liked Firefall last year when it went into open beta. But like everyone else, I saw the writing on the wall that Red 5 was having direction issues with the title, and it seemed like their MMO shooter would never quite make it out of the development seesaw it was consistently riding. Firefall was a game that didn't seem to know what it wanted to be.

  • A Second First Look

Hopping back into Firefall's long-awaited relaunch, I noticed right away that they added a new tutorial. This one shows off and explains some of the various suits and then thrusts you into your first combat mission. It won't take long but it is only here to teach you the basics before you are tasked with some more advanced missions. Slowly nudging you to start the campaign.

  • Red 5 CEO James Macauley Interview

Leading up to the launch of any game is both exciting and stressful for a development studio. The excitement stems from the obvious relief associated with a game finally reaching its goal, but the stress is sourced in the anticipation of how it will turn out. While both could be sensed when I visited Red 5 Studios in Laguna Hills, CA last week, the excitement definitely overshadowed all else.
