Don't get me wrong. I'll probably be playing this game, everything I see about it looks fun.  The only thing I've seen yet that would cause for pause, and this is a growing trend in MMOs, is the system requirments.  In another thread over in the WoW forums, it's been stated that one of the greatest contributions to the success of WoW is the fact that it can play on just about any computer in the world, from a computer that's 12 years old (my old computer I played eq on could play it with ease).  To make it even better, on that 12 year old computer, it gets 60 fps...

The system requirements are:

Minimum

  • OS: Windows XP (32/64-bit)
  • PROCESSOR (AMD): Dual Core @ 2.6 Ghz (Athon 64 x2, Athlon II x2, Phenom II x2)
  • PROCESSOR (Intel): Dual Core @ 2.2 Ghz (Core 2, Core i3, Pentium Dual Core)
  • GPU: DirectX 9 compatible AMD or Nvidia video card with 1GB RAM (AMD/ATI Radeon HD 4550 or Nvidia Geforce 8600)
  • MEMORY: 4 GB

Recommended

  • PROCESSOR (AMD): Quad Core @ 2.8 Ghz (Athlon II X4, Phenom, Phenom II X4)
  • PROCESSOR (Intel): Quad Core @ 2.4 Ghz (Core 2 Quad, i5, i7)
  • GPU: AMD/ATI Radeon HD 4850 or Nvidia Geforce GTS 450
  • MEMORY: 4 GB
It's not too bad, but if any of the newer games have shown, when the system requirements are over the radeon 4200, if you have any near the recommended requirements, you'll get horrible fps rates.  Another thing is ALOT of computers were sold with the 4200, as it was a "base" graphics card.

Like I said, I'll be playing this game, but it'll just have to be on my desktop.  It won't run on my laptop...TSW at least runs on my laptop, and it has better graphics.

CPU: Intel Core i7-3630QM Processor(2.40GHz 1600MHz 6MB)
RAM: 16.0GB PC3-12800 DDR3 SDRAM 1600 MHz
GPU: NVIDIA GeForce GT750M GDDR5 2GB
Playing anything with 60+ fps: Priceless!

Seriously?

This game is gonna be in development for another year for one. Secondly there are definitely enough people who have decent systems to run that, especially if the minimum is HD 4550 and Geforce 8600; recommended is only a GTS 450 or HD 4850.

There a quite a few games out that are doing just fine with similar system reqs.

You can look at my history, I'm not much of a doom and gloomer, more of a grumpy old man lol.  Like I said, I'll be playing it, but developers need to learn that if they support older computers with thier games then they'd have a much wider playerbase.  This is why WoW is so popular.  It plays excellent on any computer.  It's simple numbers really.  If you limit yourself to let's say GTX 580 or better you limit your overall maximum playerbase.  The game might look better than anything there ever was, but it won't be and MMO, it'd be a single player rpg with a few other players running about.  If you make a game that runs on those crappy Intel integrated graphics cards, then you open up your maximum playerbase to millions.  That's what WoW did, that's why they have millions of subscribers.

I guess I will be the elitist PC asshole here. Want to game on PC's? Dont expect to play MANY games on a cheap system.  There is so much that goes into requirements. The type of game, game engine, quality of optimiztion ect all goes into it. I'm not sure when this trend started but I have to laugh every time I see someone want "integrated graphics" to be enough. Even WoW, while it did run, ran pretty poorly with graphics set to low on intigrated graphics.

Again though, I'm just a PC eliteist asshole when it comes to these things. Because of this I accept that my opinion is that of a verry small playerbase.

Game is fine, your PC however is not. You're also probably making this post because you lagged a lot once you got into Beta with your PC you've been playing WoW with for years.

Protip: A $600 from 5years ago will not run any newer games. It's not because the developers are assholes, but it's because all of these WoW players playing a horrible game coming over to other games demanding it be the same way.

Those minimum requirements are actually pretty choice for an MMOFPS. You should see Planetside 2's requirements.

Just remember, just because there was a graphics "lull" for the past couple years in online gaming doesn't mean it should remain the same for years to come. I'm glad developers are stepping up. My $800 PC from 2years ago easily fits recommended :). Doesn't take much, all you have to do is save up for 3-4months and you'll be golden for the next 3-5years.

So by your logic, gaming should stagnate itself to cater to people running 8+ year old PC's?

With PC part prices these days you can build a current gen high performace rig at just slightly more cost than current gen consoles. Your argument is as silly as wanting to play ps3/xbox360 games on a nintendo 64.

The year is now 2012..

the 4200 is from 2009.. and it was bottom of the pile back then.. you need to move on and upgrade...

If you can run TSW is on very low settings with bugger all frame rate on a 4200..

PC games need to move on, with whats otu now we could be running some awesome looking games but sadly everything had been held up by the consoles :(

WoW graphics aren't a selling point for me. Firefall will do perfectly fine, I'm astounded by how prices are falling for hardware, recently grabbed an 8gb ddr3 laptop for $350, while not quite as good for graphics as you state are needed for Firefall that's fine by me, especially since Firefall won't release for another year at least. I saw an article that SSD prices had dropped over 40% the last while:

Most serious gamers can afford $350 every 2-3 years for a super-fast machine, I know people who spend more than that on their cellphone alone, it's no biggie....

Unfortunately, with PC games anything much older than 2 years is going to suffer in performance, and if you wish to laptop game expect to drop some decent cash for a good system.

There's a lot of reasons why Firefall probably won't equal WOW sub numbers, but that doesn't mean it won't be successful, all a matter of how you use that term.

I want that new PS3 exclusive game Dust 514 to also work on my PS1, or it will fail!

Why should I have to fork up for a new system when my PS1 works like a charm?

Idiot devs, REQUIRING me to get a PS3 to play the game...

Planetside 2 and Mechwarrior Online and Hawken and Guild Wars 2 and every single new FPS coming out for the next year are all going to fail guys, nobody has a graphics card built in 2009.

No they dont. If you want to play new PC games you have to upgrade your toaster every now and then. Otherwise its ps3 and xbox360. period.
