I'd like to let people know about a lesser-known, free to play MMO out there called Meridian 59.  Meridian was one of the first graphical MMOs ever released way back in 1996.  It is still running under its original owners, free to play, and offers a lot of unique features other MMOs just don't have.  Creating an account and downloading the game client is simple and quick at -- If you're tired of "WoW clones," and like retro-type games, Meridian definitely warrants your attention.  A few features:

-Small community, 60-100 players online as an average on server 101, 25-65 players average on 102.  You are not anonymous in this game.  Your actions really can influence the server, for better or for worse..

-Intense PVP action.  Kill another innocent player and you are branded a murderer.  Your name above your head appears in red instead of the normal white, and players are then free to attack you.  Makes for a very interesting dynamic between player killers (PKs) and hunters.  Also guild wars, there is currently a war lasting several months between the top two guilds of 101, Infinity and Heroes Unleashed.

-Player ownable guild halls.  These provide chests for loot and certain bonuses to learning spells.

-Unique spell system.  Learn spells from 6 different schools of magic, and weaponcraft.  There is Shal'ille the Lifegiver, Qor the Vile, Kraanan the War God, Faren the God of Nature, Riija the Trickster, and Jala the Bard.  Combine these in different ways to make a unique character build.

-In-game forums called news globes.  In-game mail system known as gmail.

-Mini-games, such as chess.  3 distinct factions with different bonuses that you can power up by acquiring tokens.

If you're interested, give it a try. The graphics, while dated, very much resemble Doom and Doom II.  My name on server 101 is Crow.  Shoot me a gmail and I'd be glad to help you get to know the game and explain anything to the best of my ability. is a great site for info on the game.  Thanks for checking it out and good gaming all!

I didn't even know this game was revived till recently. I used to play it back in High School, and I must say it is like getting in a time machine.  I feel like a teenager again! :)

I had a blast with the game 15 years ago (even though my slow modem didn't exactly help) but I think I will stay clear of it now. I am afraid that trying it now would affect my old memories in a bad way. :)
