Im kind of shocked there is EQ talk.  The average age of a TERA player seems way too low to have played EQ in Kunark ERA.  I remember someone did a survey in beta and the average ahe was indeed in the mid 20s, where the average age of (western) MMORPG players in general is mid 30s.

The only talking about other games were on the noob island. After leaving it, I haven't seen much of talking about other games. 

I don't really understand what this thread is implying.

TERA is weak because a small handful of humans playing it are speaking of random stuff on a zone-channel in-game?

Is that the implication here...?

not sure what you are implying or how you even came to that conclusion... my only point to this was I noticed a lot of people in this game are still ranting about old games doing the same old "barrens" talk they were doing in BETA. I also noted i had not noticed much of this at all on the two other games I recently BETA tested

No, I believe it is more of the maturity level, and the disgusting way they represent the game through the chat system. 

I don't think i've ever been on an MMO that didn't have an absurd local/global chat conversation happening at some point.

I agree they all do I just noticeD it going on a lot more here than any other games I have played recently and of course because of how the female characters are designed in this game you get lots of comments about that as well

Well, I don't so much have an issue with the whole talking about other games in chat thing. My issue is the number of a$$hats I've come across in both the chats and the forums. The forums are open to anyone it seems and asking ANYTHING seems to make the trolls come out in droves. It's really annoying.

A lot of games seem to have this issue, but it's really been bugging me lately.

FFXI to be fair was the "cleanest" global chat i have  ever seen . But if u spamed or were a retard GL finding partys

no partys = no leveling = no missions = nothing....

Noob island chat is fun and a way to kill time for many. You see some names never ever leaving the island. When all it takes is about 2 hours or less to get off it.

Arcadia chat has this a bit. Velika chat has never had this kind of chat (that I've noticed). Never seen chat devolve in Poporia. Never seen chat devolve in Ostgarath. Never seen chat devolve in Val Aureum.

Get off the damn island or if you don't want to join in on the fun (it's fun for those mindlessly levelling through), switch to the Chats tab. Done.

i'm off island.. it's died a bit but still there.. I'm on a PVE server though so usually those tend to not be as bad as far as this stuff goes..

true.. it's always common in beta for any MMO, but at release it generally dies down once people are actually paying for the game..  I'm about to get off the island so hopefully it'll die down a bunch.. i remember in beta for this game I got to around 25 or so with a couple characters and it never stopped... but again that was beta.

Eve Online chat is extremely segmented but when you head over to Jita, between trade spam, is another horrid chat commmunity

Wow Barrens chat got worse and worse progressively after its first year

Last GW2 BWE Human area was lovely, then i headed over to Norn area and had to deal with the same "alienware trolls"

The list goes on and on...

It isn't specific to ONE game as much as you'd like it to be. It is everywhere and a matter of timing to see it.

Seriously, grow a sense of humor. I was one of the guys in OB who made fun of the Elin and the people who played them; people were putting me on ignore left and right, but I kept the chat mostly entertained and it entertained me. 

Why interact with people through an online client if you can't joke with them about the things you'd never joke with them about in real life?

Maybe it's because if the same jokes gets repeated a few 1000 times it's getting old and boring? At least I can just yawn about the same boring Elin and "WoW was first MMORPG!" jokes. When I actually want to use LFG for finding groups or group members, they even annoy me since they flood the usefull messages out, been blocking the worst clowns myself.

I'm not sure which is actually more annoying , the trolls in island chat when rerolling an alt in TERA , or the hilarious "we R smart because we click on puzzles" folks in TSW (closed and open beta).

I'm beginning to think I'd rather hear the Alienware arguing trolls over the folks puffing up their IQ because they like TSW and anyone who plays anything else isn't as smart as them.

Sadly , I think it's mainly trolls in TERA but in TSW many actually believe the "the game is for smart people" drivel.

So when all the fluff is removed, the crux of the OP's issue is that there is lively chat in an area channel on a massivly multiplayer online game.  OK...
