OK - so I've spent most of the last three days in Tera... a report

UI - seems to be geared towards controller rather than keyboard mouse - you can map *most* of the keys (I can't get it to accept r-alt which is a pain). That said - you get used to the difference fairly quick - been leveling with my wife :) who is playing a healer - I'm a warrior - say Hi to Kalipso on Dragonfall sometime :). I've mapped my primary fighting skills to my mouse [plain Jane 3 button mouse] and haven't had a lot of trouble with anything

Immersive... waves of mobs sometimes which is a blast

The game is GORGEOUS. Well rendered, well done quest lines - fairly good AI

Characters are fun  - Kal is a Castanic warrior... greasy fast and tons of fun to play...

Linear play... you can skip ahead but it will throw the game out of balance... like getting armor that you can't wear yet and by the time you can, you'll be done with the area... so I'm being a completist.... sue me ;)

Game play reminds me of L2 without the grind... or maybe Aion until level 35  [that's Aion 1.0 - started in beta there too]

The grind... very light kill 3 of these, 10 of those - drops are good

Instances scale - went into a bad area and another healer [npc] just joined the party...

You can get a mount at level 11 - you can swim

You have a ton of skills and can tweak things to match EXACTLY how you want to play - me? I'm a "kill em fast and screw the damage" kinda guy :D course, not everyone has their own healer ....

Haven't crafted a lot yet, it was fast and cheap... :)

Course, there's dyes and outfits and Kal is HOT  :D

Is it the greatest thing since sliced bread and canned beer? No... that's next weekend [GW2 beta] but it is fun

so, if asked I would say

Graphics 10/10

Gameplay: 8.5

UI: 7/10

Overall: 8.5/10

Lot of fun, takes some skill [no point and twitch]  and easy to sink 8 hours into at a time ....

BTW - I saw the message - "I played this for 3 1/2 minutes and hated it.." lol, so did I but after this weekend, it's good to very good and if they can tweak the UI - it'd be even better

Rasputin

L2, Aion, LotRO, DDO, Rift

Kalipso of Dragonfall, Castanic Warrior

Spent the day playing the Tera beta. I think your assessment is spot on! I agreed with most everything. I'm not sure GW2 will be the next best thing since sliced bread and canned beer... but... it will be pretty damn close! See you in WVW!

Maybe we will see each other in CR next weekend when we que =P you know its me and my friend when we end up duoing the entire dungone XD Also since your in a PvE sever you should definatly try out duels, and idk do PvE have death matches? Because they do something really worth trying out. The game changes completely in pvp and a hint is if you try to play it like its PvE your going to get steam rolled XD

Very good review, I agree with you also.... game gets better as we lvl higher.  Thinking of trying GW2 now though after hearing all the fuss about it.

It does? I played to lvl 32 and i didnt see any change at all. just new zones with higher level mobs. the core gameplay was still the same.

It does? I played to lvl 32 and i didnt see any change at all. just new zones with higher level mobs. the core gameplay was still the same.

BAM soloing progression --

Basilisks at 20 were pretty easy.

The next lisks were at like 25 or something and were much harder.

Then the Oviliths - shit those things were crazy.

Core gameplay was the same - NO SHIT - it's CORE GAMEPLAY. Want your toon to turn into a fucking helicopter? Getting new skills, combos, glyphs, etc. And facing new attack patterns and abilities - those are what evolve the game as you pogress. Core gamplay is fucking CORE GAMEPLAY lolz.

Things don't have to be 100% different to be better or more challenging or different. If I just changed the kethcup to BBQ aauce in your hamburger, you would notice. It would be different. If I added another beef pattie or changed it to turkey - it would be different. I don't have to make it into a salad for it to be different.

Tell me the mobs all used the same skills and you used the same skills all the way up to 32. Tell me you didn't implement glyphs to change things around. Self-heals, more speed, etc.

The game gets more compicated and better as you go.

Someone please make a good MMO.

as many food analogies have been used on this forum, you did it differently enough (mmm thanks for the honey mustard) to make it particularly effectively there.

it well illustrates how "small" or eveny tiny changes (while leaving everything else the same), can make a night and day difference in your overall meal experience.

just a different condiment can be a make-or-break change.

never mind the entirely different patty that Tera serves up.

The End
---------------------------
i don't expect to like Darkfall, altho i may like it MORE than other MMOs. i know it is gonna have a very frustrating level of grind to it, even if its significantly less than most. waiting for a pure FAST action virtual world. dice rolling & character levels (even "skills") IN COMBAT should have never carried over from pencil & paper to a computer that can reasonably model 3D spaces and objects
