I might have some reasons that Mesmer is the least played class...so darn confussing! I made to level 9 and still not sure what the hell to train in or when to best use those many illusions. So, I am going staff and sword/sword or torch/1handed staff.

What are your thoughts on this class??? ¤

i did the same. got mine to about level 8, and wast pretty confused as to what exactly is a mesmer supposed to do in pvp. the clones seemed really to be very weak dps (i guess they are just decoys) and they dont tank very well in pve at all.

i dunno, i find the class interesting but a bit to weird to make it my main just yet. maybe as a 2nd or 3rd character....

I think mesmer got a bit of a bad rap during the betas. It is a more subtle profession, and there's no single one way to play it effectively (which applies to all professions really, but moreso to Mesmer than most). Unlike most professions, there's more to it than "stick'em with the pointy end".

It will probably always be one of the least played classes, since it isn't as straightforward, but more depth and complexity. Some people enjoy that in a profession, and others enjoy something that is a bit more direct (which explains the glut of warriors)

Mirrored my experience, as well. I think once a few people master how to use the class we'll see some great mesmers out there confusing the crap out of their opponents. :)

Lv41 mes here. I find mes is always about control, whether pve or PvP. What you are controlling is essentially aggro. It's a delicate balance between letting your enemies hit you then block the attack and letting them hit your illusions. Few people realizes that about 1/3 to 1/2 of mes damage comes from phantasm. So protecting them is essential for stable damage. This is where you want to control the aggro. You want them to hit clones, yourself, then phantasms in that order.

Let me see...

Mesmer is probably the least common archetype of all the classes present in GW2.

You thought people would choose novelty over familiarity?

Currently playing: GW2
Cooperative (semi cooperative)board games you should check: Pandemic, Sentinels of the Multiverse, Eldritch Horror, Descent 2.0,Level 7 Omega Protocol, Last Night on Earth

Are there really that few mesmers, or is that what we want you to think?

When you wake up at 3AM sweating with this question on your mind, then you'll understand.

Or... will you?

I briefly tried the class and I didnt find it that confusing actually but more like messy, with all the clones hanging around and a lot of random elements. I like more straightforward control and action, though I can see mesmer being fun confusing people in PvP, one of the most annoying opponents to me at least.

I rather "Stick them with the pointy end" with my Warrior's massive 2handed sword for crits upwards of 3,4,5k :3!

My main is a Mesmer (80) and I played it through the betas (good and bad times!). I never found the class to be complex at all (I think Ele is alot harder to master to be honest) in fact, in frantic PVP the illusions help you take a breather ;)

That said, and I'm sure fellow mesmers will disagree with me by stating leet dps with a s/s gs build, you do have to work a lot harder on your skills to get decent dps on enemies. In big pve and pvp events your phantasms don't last very long, if at all, which results in your damage going down the drain completely. Granted, you focus more on utility then, but no one really likes to hit things with a wet noodle. Especially when you see warriors and guardians just straight up tanking a mob, no dodging, no weapon swapping, and downing it faster than you can.

That's my experience at least. Love the class, love the butterflies, but still think it has some fundamental issues by design.

I played around with a mesmer to like level 6 in one of the BWE. I actually enjoyed it using the greatsword, but I had a feeling that at higher levels effective management of the clones and phantasms would be more important and that didn't sound like a fun play style for me. But I'll likely try the class again when I finish or get bored of my elementalist.

My main is a Charr Mesmer, which I guess is one of the most uncommon combinations. As much as I am enjoying the class, I like the decoys, I do not find much variety in the class weapons. I currently use a 2 handed staff mainly, with all my traits working towards that. And a scepter and sword as my other weapon set. It seems as the clones are mostly useless. I can't find a reason to shatter them when they put out more dps for being alive.

From a cosmetic perspective I think the mesmer looks very weak. I have yet to find any weapons that look very cool, even some of the cultural gear I could afford I passed because it looked stupid. And its probably because I am a Charr, but all of my armor looks awful. There are brown sections on the armor, buttons and straps, that can't be dyed, so every color scheme has to match brown, which is very limiting. I have seen mesmer of other races, my level, and even below that look a lot better than I do. Maybe I just haven't found a nice set yet.

What I think would spice up the Mesmer, and every class, would be to allow a variety of weapon skills. So for example if I use the staff, I could pick from two different default attacks. Its only been 2 weeks and I am starting to feel the bore of the lack of skills.

I also do not find many of the elite skills useful, I just use the Charr Warparty because it brings a hell of a lot of DPS, but is very situational for its long cooldown. I only use signets as my utilities because their passives seem to be the best. I never use their active abilties because the cooldowns are too long. I would like to see some more variety in Elite skills. I also prefered the Elite skills with shorter cooldowns and less power.

I have a level 36 Charr Mesmer (talk about going least played on two fronts). What I have found is this. In WvW, a mesmer is free glory to an opponent w/ no illusions up unless they are in a small group. In sPvP, the dps spikes are so fast that it's hard for my illusions to do their jobs. In PvE, i find the best play value for a mesmer - mobs will attack my clones. I don't know if it's just me, but people are never fooled by illusions....and if they are they die so fast, they are back attacking me before my cd is done. I love the mechanics of this class, but they will need a lot of love for many to stick with it until lvl 80. The more I speak the more  appealing the engineer is sounding to me...haha.

Funny you mentioned engineer, not generally a class I would be interested in... but decided it will be my first alt before Ele :) (i usually play caster-like classes)

This is SO uplifting!

Mesmer is what the Devs meant by, 'tons of in-game Exploration'

I am excited for Mesmers!

Mesmer was my least favorite class in GW1 but its my favorite in GW2.

Although I can be a beast in sPvP I find the profession to have alot of weaknesses in WvW. But its like many others... gotta run different setups for different aspects of play.

To the people talking about their illusions doing no damage... those are clones (decoy/mirror immages etc). Survivability tools. If you want dps/burst from them l2shatter. Phantasms are your dps illusions.

I played a Mesmer. The playstyle I liked was just like my thief. Same for ranger. So I just stayed with my thief.
