Are we allowed to discuss moderation of other forums, here?  I mean, I can't discuss it there, of course.  Not sure where to even try to have this discussion, but..

What is with the mods over there?  They seem to give infractions for all sorts of stuff.  I don't even mean being critical, or hostile, but just random stuff like this:

Your original post in I Keep hearing about lack of end game, and bots and stuff…:

DAOC only took a few days to max level but i could play that toon for years without getting bored!..

Heh, my first character in DAOC took me 25 days /played, to hit 50. That’s 600 hours. Second character took 19 days (450 hours) and no, not because I was crazy slow. That’s just how long it took. I was part of the first wave of players to hit 50 on my server, because I had no life, back then.. I knew people who took upwards of a thousand hours to hit 50. It only got much faster, after ToA drove everyone away.

It does seem weird that I remember that so well.. but DAOC was my favorite MMO, and it seemed like a big deal, at the time.

Moderator Notes:

Please refrain from making posts that do not provide any meaningful contribution to the topic at hand.

(Edit) The topic which they were just closing anyhow.  They really needed to infract me, and delete my post from the closed thread, too?

When I want a single-player story, I'll play a single-player game. When I play an MMO, I want a massively multiplayer world.

Yeah, they are out of control over there.  They give infractions for every little thing.  At least here it's more relaxed and there isn't such strict enforcement, but then again, A-Net has a lot of more traffic they need to moderate.

I think it is working.  The GW2 forums are great and the cesspool that can be found in other forums is mostly not present over there.

I've probably got 10+ infractions over there. I can find no guidelines or system about how infractions work. So frankly I'm just ignoring it all together... guess we will see how it goes.

A portion of them I probably had coming.. Others are like yours..

The oddest one so far was where I came into a thread that had two replies and pointed out that there was a thread two posts down that had several pages of replies (same topics). Nothing I said was distasteful or wrong.

Basically.. anything they edit or close seems to end up with an infraction.

Well you did manage to go completely off topic in a thread that not only is mostly hyperbole but probably beaten to death as much over there as it has been here. I have to agree with the mods on this one.

What do the infractions do exactly?  Prevent you from posting for a short while?  Get too many and get banned?

Do they really need to go that far, though?  I never troll there, I'm actually a fan of the game, and yet I've been infracted like 6 times.  Is that really a good way to treat customers, just to keep the forums nice?  Who are they trying to impress, if not the fans who's posts they keep locking and deleting?

As to your case, that is unfortuneate.  I'm just saying that I can post a suggestion without the thread resorting to saying the idea sucks.  You get actual constructive criticism back.

the GW2 forums are really hardcore. i don't think i've seen anything like it as they shut down and merge topics left and right. i tend to do most of my GW2 chatter on guru.

i love how Rift handles forums though. you can talk about whatever the hell you want as long as you aren't a dick about it, even other games.

that's what i've noticed too, there are never any threads of "RAGE QUIT GAME SUXXORS" or the like over there. or the sneaky stuff i've seen in other forums where they start off by complimenting the game then troll it to death with nonsense so bad they proved they don't even play it because what they claim is not even in the game. :)

Meanwhile people ARE free to make suggestions requests and the like  to improve the game without reprocussions of any kind

Sure I broke a tiny rule, but they didn't have to go all soup nazi on me.  I just went off-topic, as did a number of other posts in that thread.  It's not even like I was talking about baseball or politics either.  Just a different MMO.

I have no idea, but its insulting, at the very least.  Plus, deleting posts is downright hostile, and IMHO, should only be done when someone is clearly over the line.

Good moderators want to keep a discussion going in a meaningful way. If a thread ends up going somewhere else, it is the duty of the moderator to bring people back on topic. If you cannot accept the work of moderators, then I'd suggest using forums that don't have moderators, but work on a user-driven foundation - like Reddit. Down and upvoting posts is how it works over there, although it gets sometimes abused by people who downvote, because they don't agree or troll.
