so People who played GW1 like myself, have there names saved.. is this for all servers>? say i wanted the name Dumbbutt Harry but someone has that name saved, but he doesnt join my server, can i still not use it? theres a few names i wanted cause they were taken when i made my account years ago.. i mean they cant just deny everyone those names accross all servers right?

Server names don't exist - there is only one unique name across all servers (due to the ability to join other servers for PvE through the "guesting" feature)

I should also add that only two named characters are reserved.  If you wanted to add a middle name, go ahead, a single word name go ahead

With the guesting system I assume names will be "global" across all servers.

Yes, there definatly will be a lot more competition for names than just a single server.  Facing off against everyone who pre-purchased during headstart.

Names are global not per server. Keep in mind that after deleting a character you "lock" the name for 24 hours. So you can create a character, skip to end, enter a name then delete and remake from start taking all your sweet time. You can also use all 5 slots with random characters just to reserve the names, then delete them and take 1 hour + to recreate them to fit your needs

That's your account name not your in-game name. And I have no idea if you can change that

The display name and number combination tied to your account can not be changed, the name is non-unique, but the combination of name and number is unique per person.

Your character name is global.

If thats the case i might just cancel my prepurchase and rebuy it using a different display name.

Display name is not the same as character name. You have 5 characters all with whatever name you want (as long as its not used by anyone else when you create your character) however your display name is what guildmates etc will see in their friends list, along with your current character name

Remember that there are 20 million used two word names from GW1; many of which will free up shortly after launch sine they are tied to dead GW1 accounts. So you might wait and try for the name after launch on the 28th.

even before launch, you could only claim your names by logging into your GW1 account by July 31st. So if you didnt.. your name is up for grabs.

The more original your name, the less likely you will have issues. People who always have to fight to get their names at launch usually have to do so because they aren't very original.

My sylvari will have a completely original one word name, so I'm not really worried about not getting that name. My other characters all have multi word names, the combinations of which are original, so I'm not really worried about those either. If the name you want is derivitive enough that others are likely to chose the same name, then you can't really get upset if someone "steals it" before you get it, because they have as much right to it as you do.

It's nice that GW2 does allow multi word names. It greatly expands the potential name space, decreases the odds that someone else will chose the same name as you and if you come up with some appropriate last names to go with your favorite single word names, just in case, you'll be all set to take it in stride if your name is gone by the time you create your character.
