I have to ask people who use mice in their left hands... Why? How did you learn to do it this way? I'm really trying to figure this out. I've always used it in my right hand because the mouse is positioned on the right of the keyboard. To me, it's the same reason I don't flip the keyboard upside-down so I can have the numpad on the left, then insist on "left-handed" keyboards that are already made this way.

I have to wonder if people are making a conscious effort to use their dominant hand for things instead of just using whatever hand happens to grab it first.

It wasn't learned - from the time I first sat down at a computer I naturally used left hand for mouse. Nothing to figure out.

I wasn't willfully saying "damn the masses I am doing it different because I am a minority!"

Yep...I learned mostly on my right hand, and I'm still better at aiming in FPSes, etc with my left hand....it feels awkward at times, but once I get warmed up I have pinpoint accuracy, whereas right handed I need to concentrate more to get the same accuracy.

you kidding? Of course because I eat, write, brush my teeth with my left hand so I naturally moved the mouse with the left hand. It wasn't like it was glued to the right side of the keyboard, not sure how you can't fathem that.

You wonder why people use their DOMINANT hand for things instead of using whatever hand is closest? I believe it has to do with the fact that its the dominant hand, which you have more control and precision with.

The mouse is not "positioned on the right of the keyboard" as you put it. You mostly see it on the right of the keyboard because most people are right handed. Every left handed person I know has the mouse on the left on their keyboard and uses their left hand to move it....

I'm a lefty, I don't have this problem. I've heard it from other lefties, though. I've been using a mouse right handed since I was a child though, I suppose I've just gotten used to it. I've tried using it in my left hand, and it feels foreign and awkward. That sort of illustrates a point though, people adapt to situations with repetition regardless of things like 'handedness'.

In other words, just get used to it ;p You could buy a left-handed mouse, but I'm too cheap to consider that a worthwhile investment. I also tend to move with WASD, which might help, since my left hand IS quicker on the KB than my right is on the mouse. During battle, my mouse hand is usually just aiming the camera, all my movement and skill usage takes place in my left hand.

I don't doubt you, but that's so strange to me, especially since the letters most often used to type are easiest reached with the left hand, maybe because KBs were made with the mouse in mind (multi-tasking). That and your most used skills are left-to-right on the KB, so left-handed mouse user's right hand would be far away from all the important stuff. Unless they use the numpad...I won't even get into house awkward that feels.

Maybe I'm the wierd one ;x

Being a lefty also I have had issues with this problem.  I found changing the left and right arrow key's to turn left or rigt and not strafe solves this problem.  Strafing can still be achieved by holding the right mouse button down and using the left and right arrow keys.  Not sure if this will affect dodge though.

Soon we lefties will rise, and there will be blood in the streets!  um I mean yep we could really do with a good left handed mouse, roll on naga and Ouraboros.

rpg/mmorg history: Bloodwych>Bards Tale 1-3>Eye of the beholder > Might and Magic 2,3,5 > FFVII> Baldur's Gate 1, 2 > Planescape Torment >Morrowind > WOW (9500 hrs on main mage)> oblivion > LOTR (480 Hunter) > Rift (230 hours mage) > Guild Wars (1900hrs elementalist) Vanguard. > GW2(350 elementalist)

Now playing GW2/Diablo 3/Rift

I am a lefty, but I have been able to train myself into using my right hand with a mouse. It's actually not that hard to do, it's more about putting the motions into muscle memory.

Of couse, I did have a leg up. I played Trumpet and Tuba when I was younger, and all of the valve control was with right hand. I also have worked numerous bookkeeping jobs where I would 10 key with my right hand while writing with my left to balance books.

So choices are, get a new set of peripherals made for lefties, or train yourself to use your right for more things. Training your right hand is surprisingly easy, you just have to stick with it.

So you use your left hand for everything? I use my left for writing, eating, and brushing my teeth, sure, but those are all tasks that require you to hold a long and narrow object. You hold them in an extremely similar way. A mouse isn't shaped at all like any of those things, and you don't exactly "hold" it, either. You simply place your hand over it.

If you play console games, do you try to find custom gamepads that have the buttons on the left instead of right? Do you only open doors with your left hand regardless of which side the knob is on? If you pick up a cup to drink from with your right hand, do you pass it to your left before drinking? Do you only keep things in your left pockets because putting them in the right would be awkward?

There are countless things that anyone can do with either hand, and there is nothing special about a mouse that requires one hand or another. The same argument could be used to say, "I use the mouse in my right hand so I can keep my dominant hand on the keyboard."

I'm tired of left-handed people constantly using their handedness as an excuse as though it's some sort of disability. Just look at the OP: "I'm not sure how i can run around in circles in melee range due to I'm a lefty." From the way a lot of people act, you would think left-handedness isn't a matter of which hand is dominant but a condition that restricts the use of the right-hand. It's not a disability. It's not a condition. You can use either hand for nearly anything just as easily as right-handed people.

If you typically use the mouse in your left hand, so what? Move it to the right when you play games.

Lol, its not about holding "long and narrow objects". Its about tasks that require precision and dexterity. Of course I could train my right hand to do them like you did or a righty could do the same, there is just no reason to unless maybe you knew from the moment you saw a pc for the first time that you were going to play video games on it.

The thing you don't seem to understand is that when you are given an object to manipulate in some way all humans have a natural tendency to manipulate that object with either the left or the right. The decision does not lie in which on is closest but which one you have better control over. You don't give a child a pencil on his right hand expecting him/her to write with the right hand, by your logic then he would just use the right hand. But, we all know it doesnt work that way, they will go to which ever hand they feel more control with.

I don't move it to the right hand because it would take me a while to get used to it and I can accomplish what I want with my left. The OP is just asking for a better way to set up his config to suite a left handed person, not really bashing on righties. Of course just like anything in society its always easier to suggest and request others to do something when you already know how.

Using the mouse with my right hand is very akward It's like trying to write with your right when you are a lefty, It's the same feeling.

If it's not broken, you are not innovating.

I'm not sure how i can run around in circles in melee range due to I'm a lefty, I use arrow keyes with my right hand and the mouse with my left hand, i have always been kinda poor pvper in other mmos when I see people circle strafe me and bunnyjumping I can't do that, I've tried to train but it all feels so akward.

I even try the keymapper to throw around some keyes to fit my style it works in other mmos ok but in GW2 I'm struggling

Any other lefties out there that can give some advice?

I'm surprised to see this, I'm left handed myself but I have never used the mouse on the left.

I use the standard left hand on the keyboard right hand on the mouse setup.

until now I always assumed all lefties adapted to the standard setup just like I did. (very surprised)

I am left-handed, and I never trained myself to use a mouse in my right hand. I never used it in my left hand in the first place. It wasn't a conscious decision. The mouse was to the right of the keyboard, and I had no reason to move it to the other side.

There are countless objects that you can use in either hand, and a mouse is among them. Certain things, such as pencils and forks, are actually difficult to hold properly in your off-hand, as though the muscles simply don't want to cooperate. It takes more than a simple "getting used to" to change this. In the case of a mouse, changing hands is a simple matter of "getting used to" it.

The OP obviously isn't bashing on right-handed people. Instead he's giving left-handed people a bad name by acting as though he has special needs due to his "condition". He can't circle-strafe because he's left-handed? No. He can't circle-strafe because he's using his mouse and keyboard in an obviously suboptimal way and doesn't want to change. It's the same thing as when clickers say they "can't" use the keyboard for spells or "need" click-to-move and then cite some unrelated condition that doesn't seem to inhibit any other keyboard-related skills such as typing forum posts. I understand there are real conditions out there that do make certain aspects of playing games difficult, but being left-handed doesn't even come close to being among them.

Lefty here as well.

My setup for every game movement wise is always centered around the numpad.  Why you'd use the arrow keys is beyond me since the keys are almost always isolated and don't have easy to reach side keys.  My setup allows literally every other key on the numpad to be used for something if it needs to be, I'll even reasign the function of numlock if I need the key.

I only use the arrow keys for side functions... inventory... mic use... you get the idea.  though I do use RIGHT ARROW as a main ability key because of how easy and natural my thumb reaches the key.

Buy a proper left handed mouse... not one made for both hands.  I gamed with a mouse made for both hands for a long time.  Bought a Deathadder awhile back and I can't describe to you the difference it makes being able to comfortably use the side buttons.  I might get the lefty naga but I manage with only two mouse buttons just fine.

As a lefty I play at a competitive level in any game I choose to play.  Even MMO's.  It's all about practice and finding what is comfortable for you.  Use the numpad.  I can't stress it enough to avoid the arrow keys for movement.

To those suggesting just moving the keyboard... doesn't work.  It doesn't feel natural AND with the left hand all the buttons that are there for the WASD setup just can't be reached easily as with the right hand.

I really wish we lefties would get some more gaming gear for our needs.  Right now very few companies actually keep us in mind.

Left-handed myself and have zero problem with right handed mouse and keyboard set up... Always kind of giggled at you restricted folks ;p Maybe I'm more evolved - my X-men skill is right-handed periferal use, score!
