...Oh boy.

5/17/12 5:02:07 PM#1

First off, let me say, this is not a troll.  I haven't read very many threads in reguards to people not liking it, I don't care why they didn't like it.  Allow me to explain.

I am thinking of pre-ordering GW2, and I want to get an insight from the people who didn't like it.  I haven't played it, I only know what is on the web site and seen a few gameplay videos.  What I do know is MMORPG's.  I have played a ton of them like most of us.

What I want to know from those who don't care for GW2 for whatever reason is what games have they played for extended periods in the past?  I figure this is a good way to get an idea of how much I will like/dislike the game.  If everyone who hates it comes from the same background that I do, then odds are I won't care for it.  Though I suspect it'll be a bit more random than that.

Thanks in advance!

Thats a rough one. I think its going to be different for every person that replies. Personally, I think GW2 is a very well made game. As a long time gamer, I can appreciate the amount of time, effort and hard work anet put into this title. Its honestly not that I don't like this game, it just doesn't appeal to my tastes if that makes any sense. At this time in my gaming preferences, I cant get into a game like this. The setting, tone, pace are not my cup of tea atm. And I know that my taste changes, like any gamer. Maybe sometime down the road, I'll get the itch to play this style of mmo. But right now, its not what I'm looking for.

So you are basically asking people to make up your mind for you.  For discussion purposes, it seems like you have already decided and you want people to confirm your decision. Please know I'm not trying to rain on your topic but it seems like you could figure most of this out by watching a few videos, skim through this, and then relating to your past gaming experience with what you want.

I had several misgivings about GW2 for quite some time.......it just sounded like it was nothing new, same old same old with a different skin, no matter what all the fanboys were saying.

Until I played the BWE.

See if you can get a beta key somehow, somewhere, or borrow someones account to try it out over the next BWE

OP:

GW2 innovation and uniqueness will come from how it makes you feel when you playing.

If you ever played WoW or other similar MMORPG and thought:

-"these bandits here aren't threatening anyone";
-"another quest that is either kill x amount of these + y amount of these and collect z amount of these, which in turn means I just have to kill a random amount of dudes that drop Z";
-"I just killed that dude and now I need to go kill it again for this quest";
-"grrr so many players here, it will take ages to complete these quests";
-"damn idiot piece of "###!!!##@@ stealing my node while i fought this mob";
-"what is actually the story behind the world?":
-"Will I ever get that piece of gear";
-"75% to next level" "76% to next level" "77% to next level" "12% to go to next level":
- "grrrr no trade skill point grrrr"

You might find GW2 compelling.

Currently playing: GW2
Some games you should play before you die: X-COM, Total Annihilation, No one lives forever, Half-life, Giants:Citizen Kabuto, Sacrifice, Clive Barker's:Undying, Baldur's Gate, StarLancer, Homeworld

First MMORPG for me was DAoC (started in European beta), played it for about 2 years, never played WoW, the only "modern" themeparks I played are LotRO and PotBS. I'm firmly in the sandbox/hybrid camp of gamers, last games I played have been Ryzom, Vanguard, Haven & Hearth and Xsyon.

I don't care for GW2.

I maintain this List of Sandbox MMORPGs. Please post or send PM for corrections and suggestions.

The only way for you to know if GW2 is for you, just watch all the BWE videos and Press Videos out there on Youtube.

If nothing in those videos is what you want in an MMO, then GW2 is not for you.

The videos shows an extremely detailed of what you can expect from playing GW2, I was in BWE and those videos is exactly the same as what I experienced. I liked it so I bought it.

There is also alot of Q & A from Reddit, if what the developer is saying doesn't interest you then the game is really not for you. Because this is a rare case of what they are telling you is exactly whats in the game. Nothing to over expect or be blinded by Hype.

WvWvW is exactly what they explained will be, Structured PVP is exactly as showned and explained, PVE DE is pretty much what they were showning during the Press Videos, but the BWE videos will be more accurate due to the larger number of players.

The Graphics is pretty much what everyone is looking at, since they haven't optimized the graphics noone has anything different.

The skills is exactly the same skills that we saw during BWE.

The one thing that really surprised me is the size of the cities and zones, other than that, pretty much everything I saw is what I experienced.

So if none of the videos makes you want to buy GW2 then nothing will. Hope that helps.

GW2 is a good game, just not for me.

Here is my list-

Horrible FPS (due to beta most probably)

Skills limited to weapons, i hate that

Teleporting around, it makes the world seem small

The stupid server lock thing

Questing, It feels like a new way of doing the old method, I didn't like it at all, just felt like a grind and box check

Can jump to highest level to PVP, i hate that

Cash shop(although I don't know much about it)

Loading screens between zones

I don't like the way the game maniupulates your level to correspond to the content

No hook to keep you playing (atleast for me there isn't)

I didn't care for the story and don't really like the lore

The price is rediculous, glad I played it on roommates account before purchasing

It felt like a PVP E-sport with optional, kinda pointless PVE, and to be honest I enjoy PVE more.

I've played many MMO's.  The only ones I've played in the last 2 years are WoW and EVE. I've also played virtually every half decent(lol) one that came out between 2004-2008.

If you decide to buy it I hope you have fun! : )

See OP this guy gets it, everything he listed is exactly what has been discussed, and showned in every single Press Beta video as well as every single BWE video you can find.

To many, everything he listed is exactly what we wanted, thats why there are so many Pre-Purchases, to those that didn't like it, they won't be playing it nor buy it. Therefore no lost to anyone.

Nothing anyone does is gonna satisfy everyone, the features that is generally praised ( everything listed) might be hated by some, its really up to you as the buyer and player to see if you will like it.

Game CPU locked at this point, not optimised at all, graphic cards not really used.

Skills limited to weapons, i hate that

Don't you just hate it when you can smash someone brains in with a hammer,  but you can't do the same with a longbow? I mean making sense can feel awkward, can't it?

Teleporting around, it makes the world seem small

You can run all over the place if that's what you enjoy, but convenience wins over boredom in this case. Love it or hate it, but if you prefer to be bored you can actually bore yourself until you grow tired of being bored.

The stupid server lock thing

Oh, overflow servers, they had problems with splitting parties last BWE, but that is one thing I hope they fix ASAP. Though sitting in a queue isn't exactly a far better experience.

Questing, It feels like a new way of doing the old method, I didn't like it at all, just felt like a grind and box check

It's a new way of questing compared to your typical MMORPG. Maybe you just don't like MMORPG's?

Can jump to highest level to PVP, i hate that.

You're a hardcore player that like to gank noobs then? Glad you'll have to work a bit harder to kill noobs than in your typical MMORPG.

Cash shop(although I don't know much about it)

It's there, not P2W, but it's there. It's not like they ever said it wouldn't be.

Loading screens between zones

Not one big seamless open world. Instances, teleporting = loading screens. If your PC is good enough it won"t take long, but you're right on this one.

I don't like the way the game maniupulates your level to correspond to the content

You prefer zone you level through and never go back to because you won't get xp from the mobs anyway? A world you are forced to go through only to experience 10% of the content as end-game? That's been done to death, no need for GW2 to do that too.

No hook to keep you playing (atleast for me there isn't)

If hook = gear grind that will let you faceroll the keyboard and still beat the more casual competition with ease, then no you won't find that in GW2. I'm sure whatever you're playing now will help you in that department.

I didn't care for the story and don't really like the lore.

Tastes differ, it's your prerogative to not like something.

The price is rediculous, glad I played it on roommates account before purchasing

I guess you're playing F2P games then, because purchase + sub will cost you more than what GW2 will cost you.

It felt like a PVP E-sport with optional, kinda pointless PVE, and to be honest I enjoy PVE more.

Ah yes, WoW, that cheap alternative for GW2. ;-)

If you decide to buy it I hope you have fun! : )

No worries.

Not sure why you are giving this guy a hard time. He was not bashing the game, only pointing out things he does not like. I am a huge fan of the game and like most of the things he does not, but not everyone likes the same thing and he gave his dislikes in a reasonable way. Save your vitriol for the trolls.

OP, just don't play.....  makes your decision quick and concise.  No need for a repeat LONG ass thread to tell you what you probably already know and are just here to get people to repeat.....oh wait, nvm, that would be trolling and you said you weren't a troll.  Sorry.

Anyway....just don't play. There.  Decision made.  I hope you find a game you will enjoy that is flawless in beta, most importantly, and one that you can get enough backing from the MMORPG.com community on, to feel secure in your decision.

I am, btw....even if you don't care....a big fan of GW2.  And if you can't decide if you want to play it by reading reviews and looking at ALL the thousands of videos on YouTube....

Just read up on the game. If you do your homework you'll know what you're paying for. All the features they promise seem to be in game.

You could just do what most people do when not sure of the newest MMO. Wait a few weeks after release and check back to see if people are stil raving about it or if it was just a new novelty that wears off as quick as it came in. That is what I did with SWTOR and boy am I glad I didn't buy it.

I have to agree with this.  If you don't have the capacity to read about a game before you buy it, and instead turn to others to help you figure out what you want, then just don't play.  Focusing on peoples dislikes and searching for self similarities is only going to lead you to one path anyhow, so just don't play.  The game requires effort, and thinking ahead. You need to have a reason to want to put out that effort, and that denotes a true desire to play. This game is not for you.

Try TERA, the graphics are nice.

I would suggest TSW but that might be a bit beyond your preferences, from what I hear, you have to research stuff to figure out how to solve some tasks. It's a bit of a niche game.

GW2 is a good game, just not for me.

Here is my list-

Horrible FPS (due to beta most probably)

even with CPU bound on betas i get smooth play on sPvP and WvW (i3 2120 + hd6850).

Skills limited to weapons, i hate that

reason why i love the game but you have utility skills + heal skill + elite skill that dont depend on weapons.

Teleporting around, it makes the world seem smal

you can always run around the world. i use always teleport and world feel huge

The stupid server lock thing

Do you mean overflow? if is that will be but great but for now is a problem for partys. not a big deal because arenanet will correct that

Questing, It feels like a new way of doing the old method, I didn't like it at all, just felt like a grind and box check

LOVE LOVE this, main reason to plain GW2 for me

Can jump to highest level to PVP, i hate that

another amazing feature, i want to do PvP from begining and i want to do PvP with skilled players, so if i loose i know is because other player is better and not because have better armour/weapon

Cash shop(although I don't know much about it)

GW2 is a B2P game so need a cash shop. np since isnt a P2W shop

Loading screens between zones

you dont have open world pvp servers and they take like 2s to load...

I don't like the way the game maniupulates your level to correspond to the content

another feature i love in game. i dont know why only now they remember this. is perfect

No hook to keep you playing (atleast for me there isn't)

you have sPvP, you have WvW, you have PvE and lot of dungeons and you will get expansion. if you want raids than game isnt for you...

I didn't care for the story and don't really like the lore

valid point. i didnt read any story so dont spoil when game lauch so i dont know

The price is rediculous, glad I played it on roommates account before purchasing

price is equal to any other MMORPG. you can get more cheap if you buy on online stores and is a B2P so you dont need to pay subs

It felt like a PVP E-sport with optional, kinda pointless PVE, and to be honest I enjoy PVE more

GW2 have the most competitive PvP i ever seen on a MMORPG and you have not one type of PvP but two ( sPvP and WvW). im a 80% PvE player (or i was) the reason why i play LOTRO for many time but the PvE on GW2 is just amazing, after i try BW i never play again LOTRO and i have almost 1 month VIP.

if you mean pointless because you cant grind weapon/armour  on PvE to have a big advantage on PvP, than yes, PvE on GW2 is pointless

I've played many MMO's.  The only ones I've played in the last 2 years are WoW and EVE. I've also played virtually every half decent(lol) one that came out between 2004-2008.

If you decide to buy it I hope you have fun! : )

I have to agree with this.  If you don't have the capacity to read about a game before you buy it, and instead turn to others to help you figure out what you want, then just don't play.  The game requires effort, and thinking ahead. This game is not for you. Try TERA, the graphics are nice. I would suggest TSW but that might be a bit advanced, from what I hear, you have to research stuff to figure out how to solve some tasks.

Well, this thread went pretty much as expected.  The OP had a reasonable, albeit unusual request, and we get posts like the ones above attacking him.  We also had a person provide a very reasoned, point-by-point post as to why he won't be playing, and people still felt the need to try and dispute his own PERSONAL list of things he didn't like about the game.

Yup, pretty much what I expected when I read the first post.
